I'll save you the effort in finding out what Jim Phipps has to say. It will something like this

"It is very difficult losing Jamie Murphy as he is one of leading players, but we had no choice due to him getting the chance to better himself. There was nothing we could have done to have kept him, but that is football and Nigel Adkins knows this"

Is any of that untrue?

I don't think Murphy will play.

I think it will be a 1-1 draw.

Hope this helps.

How long did he have left on his previous contract?
I have no idea, but he could have 1 year or 10 years, he still might insist on a get out clause before he signs an extension.

And before everyone concentrates too much on reason number 231 to hate the club and implode after an opening day defeat, let's just wait and see if he's sold and at what price.

I predict we will get the game out of the way then announce Murphy has been sold. Our board aren't so stupid to announce it before we play a home game.

Brighton's version of Rob Staton has apparently tweeted that Jamie Murphy has been down in Brighton all day with representatives and that the initial fee is meant to be in the region of £1.5m with add ons.

Has anyone seen the alleged Tweet? Can't we at least speculate about something which exists.

Would you have been happy if Murphy has refused to sign our new contract offer and walked for free?

His original deal ran to summer 2016. If letting him go for free after he helped us to promotion is what you're asking, then yes I'd have been happy with that. It's not like his deal had 5 months left – he joined us on a 3.5 yr deal.

Down at the AMEX, they're very confident things will be completed if they haven't already according to Shield.

and therein lies the key

I'm not delighted at losing one of our better players but we do have enough options to cover the loss so Mr Adkins have you got a GOOD defender and a GK lined up?

We don't need to replace Murphy but we do need to use the funds well in other areas. If we do that I will consider it good business.

If it's a calculated move by Adkins to reinvest immediately, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. If it's a result of a gross lack of foresight by the club though, that's another matter entirely.

Ah ok. I'll give you £10 for a £1 lottery ticket as long as it's the winning one.

Let's not pretend that keeping Jamie Murphy is anywhere near a guarantee of promotion.

If he had ten years, we wouldn't need to offer him a new contract.
If he had one year and asked for a low release clause we could refuse and sell him. If we leave it until he only has six months then realistically he can walk away on a free. So we then put ourselves in the position where we have to agree to his demands; the scenario that you described in the post I responded to.
What I am suggesting is that if we'd started the negotiations earlier, we would have had a stronger bargaining position and could have negotiated a higher release clause.

If you don't know how long he had left on his contract then you're in no position to disagree with me.

And, yes, I'm prepared to wait to see what happens and, if he goes, how much for.

And who we spend it on.

£2m is a decent fee and I'm sure Adkins will get replacements. Murphy is too inconsistent imo, gets bullied and very weak. Why are people saying, get rid of other squad players first. Who is going to buy the crap overpaid crocks that Clough has left behind?

I'm forever amazed that those who knew "exactly what this board would do" always appear to be the ones most surprised and aghast when things go wrong as far as the fans are concerned.

I'm also amazed at how simple contract negotiations are on the Internet.

For now it looks like a player might be sold, for a fee we don't know, possibly (or possibly not) using a release clause the exact terms of which (if it exists at all) we are unaware of.

Therefore...what?

Observation nothing: Conclusion dinosaurs.

It's not brilliant to watch.

It's unpleasant that our loyal, dedicated and long suffering fans who have seen thin and thinner over the years have been lied and bullshitted to once again.

There is no brilliance to watching people getting royally fucked off unless you a pig fan masquerading as a Blade.

Oh it is brilliant to watch. And it's not because I'm a pig fan, or because I'm not a Blade - It's because people flying off the handle, jumping to conclusions and just generally having knee jerk reactions to every tiny little things will never get old. The rage I see on these forums at times is insane. These aren't the only football based forums I have been on, and the others can be bad also - But this I'd say tops it. And no it's not because we are all long suffering, dedicated or loyal - It's because by and large, a football fan is impatient and very expectant.

If you want suffering fans, look at the teams that have gone out of business, or have been fighting against such things for several seasons. We aren't at our best, nowhere near - But we are by no means at our worst.

Just maybe Murphy hasn't joined the love in for Adkins and after been played the first half out of position at Gillingham thinks sod it if they are prepared to sell I might as well go

Remember it could be argued that Clough got him playing at his best and perhaps he hasn't got the same rapport with the new man

See Loughboroughs response, we renegotiated it with plenty of time. So your concerns are alleviated. :)

lets hope we don't spend the money on a right back! (If Murphs does go)

What it boils down to is this...

Does it mean A top two finish is now ruled out.... No

Does it mean a top two finish is now more unlikely......Yes

Will we still finish in the top six even without Murphy... Probably

Will the money be re-invested in the playing squad... Some of it but probably not until Jan.

And those saying they are done with United for selling their best players, well then you are supporting the wrong club to start with it is what that have always done.

I think if this happens. I will go on and still enjoy my weekend. People need to get a grip! It's not as though we've not been in this position before, it's the blades bloody way. I've got used to it after 25 years, I'm sure people on this board have suffered far longer!

Subsequently have. Hopefully then if there is a clause, it's a decent one.

I accept the reality of being a L1 club, I just want to feel the board are doing things the right way to give us the best chance of not being a L1 club.

We don't even know if there was a release clause.

If I were Jamie Murphy, I'd want one though. Because I'd be a Championship quality player languishing on League 1 at a club where promotion hardly looks nailed on. I'd have been the best player over the past couple of seasons getting marked by two men and kicked about. I'd want to play for my country which won't happen in this league. I'd have a young family who are happy in Sheffield but aware that my career is finite and that I have to provide for them, so a substantially bigger wage and the chance to uproot somewhere nice like Brighton, at a time where they are young enough to not be that affected, would seem like a good career move.

If there is a release clause, don't blame the club. We wanted him to sign a new contract and it's perfectly understandable to compromise with a player who is better than this league. If it's £1.75-2.2m it's a win/win situation. Obviously, the win for the fans depends on wether all the money is re-invested wisely.

Indeed - and don't get me wrong, I think this would be less of a loss than Maguire was a year ago.

But our chances of promotion are much better in my view with Murphy at the club.
