Yep... and with 35 in the squad we're unlikely to have a great deal available... so we have to trim that to make more money available.

But, if you've chucked 20 million into a project that didn't succeed, and you're not willing to chuck any more in for the next phase of the project then how would you get your 20 million back?

When buying into this game, you have to be prepared to continue the support. You start out by understanding the risks, understanding the possible outcomes and understanding the costs involved over a period of time, and you don't get involved unless you can afford to deal with all that.

One thing is absolutely for sure. Not investing in acquiring the best players for your level is a guaranteed way of chucking away the money permanently. Selling the best players is a way of not investing.

Don't agree.

The Prince will have worked out what he could expect as a return if we make it to the PL and he sells. Based on that he'll have a budget in mind of how much he's prepared to put in to try to get us there, if he's sensible and the costs look like spiralling above what he'd planned he shouldn't put anymore in.

It's like gambling, you have a figure you can "afford" to lose to make your ROI if you hit/exceed that figure you don't carry on.

What concerns me is I'm sure I read that he had around 20Million£ he was prepared to invest, not sure there'll be a lot left now. I think not going up last year with Clough may have a big impact on us that we don't apprciate yet, monetry wise.

He is to us, because we need Murphy to stand any chance of promotion. Yes, if the £1M plus was all ploughed back into the team then maybe it would be a good deal, but it won't be so it isn't (especially this close to the end of the window).

It's the old 'Cabaye to PSG' argument. Just because a fee is over the odds doesn't mean it's a good deal for the selling club.

It's how you replace the outgoing player. Newcastle did not bother to do it and after dodging relegation last season they finally woke up and noticed they needed to spend some money. That said it has not been enough to defeat a certain League 1 team in a pre-season friendly. :)

in view of bladesmans post above I expect this to be bollux, but off twitter:

Mike Stephenson ‏@Stephenson87M 2m2 minutes ago

Brighton media expecting Jamie Murphy to be in line to make his debut on Tues night. Fought off competition from 2 other Champ clubs!

He was backing the Harlee Dean rumour right until Adkins smashed that out of the park.

I am assuming the board have told NA on his arrival that funds raised through player sales he can use to rebuild

I am also assuming that regardless of Murphy's sparkling early season form last season, he's seen Murphy pre-season and at Gillingham and come to the conclusion that £2m is too good to turn down

I am hopeful that before Murphy goes anywhere (if that is the case), his and at least one other replacement are lined up to stop the fans going in to meltdown

Don't kid yourself. Woolford is murph us replacement. Obviously we will try and bring in new players but we know we won't!

Well indeed. But the parallel here is that I don't think we could adequately replace Murphy, with the fee we would receive, in this transfer window. This would leave us playing half the season with a neutered attack and probably scupper another promotion charge. Is £2M and change worth that to the club?

Sky Sports news aren't ones to publish a story without a fairly reliable source to be fair.

I wouldn't be surprised if we had sold him normally it's just the fact that Adkins said, and I quote something along the lines of "Look, Jamie Murphy isn't going anywhere" at the ask adkins event. I can't see that doing any favours for his reputation if he then goes and sells him.

Does have the aroma of a good old United style balls up though.

They reported a fee was agreed with Leeds for Sharp and it wasn't till around 2 weeks later

Sky Sources are wank now

We could replace him but we probably wouldn't I mean we havn't replaced Maguire. We havn't replaced Ched Evans and we havn't even replaced McDonald.

When you're a gambler, you don't dump your whole bankroll on the first bet.

...Or Mick Jones.....or Currie.....or Woodward....or Walker....the list is an historical admission than when we sell we never show the resolve to go out and buy a player of proven quality to replace someone who's moved on.

We usually just stumble on a replacement.

So his business plan was to 'invest £20m in the hope we'll get to the PL?'
Maybe KM clinched the deal by chucking in a few bags of sand.

To continue that analogy, the Fresh Prince of Fresh Air is currently looking down the wrong end of his binoculars at a three legged, mange-ridden Zonkey (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2614311/What-cross-donkey-zebra-A-zonkey-course.html) thinking ''Well, at least we're only one furlong down''.

As I said on the other thread;

P.S Foxy thread merge?

£1.75M pretty much gone. Think parallels to Stephen Quinn.

I feel a Pommpey style sweary rant coming on. I think I'll make a brew first as it may help me limit the use of the c word.

Selling our best player in August how predictable.

These are trying times for Adkins. Firstly he says Murphy won't be sold, as I write it seems he might go, if so, will we strengthen or simply bring in another player who at best can at least control a ball?

This is not the way an ambitious club should conduct itself, and if Adkins has been sold a pup then I hope he'll distance himself from whoever makes the decisions to buy or sell, because it's clearly not Adkins, our manager, who is responsible for buying or selling our players. I mean, would adkins have assured the fans that Murphy won't be sold?

Exactly that's what's confusing.

Either Adkins has been telling some porky's or someone else is buying/selling the players.

He looked mostly awful at Gillingham, but then they all did.

If this is true, and it's looking increasingly more likely, then I personally think it's an awful piece of business.

If I was Adkins I would walk.

He has been made to look a right tit if the sale of Murphy is completed.

Puts the "Game Changing Investment" statement really into perspective

I'm surprised about this, its the kind of thing I expect to happen at 6pm on the last day of the transfer window.
