Best opening days

Deane & Agana copping 3 apiece against Chester I believe in Bassetts first full season in what is today's League one equivalent.

I'd be happy with another season like that this year, it was the season before we started with that 3 - 0 opener at West Brom!

The 6-0 v Chester wasn't opening day. I think our 1st match that season was actually a 3-1 away win v Gillingham? A repeat of that would be good if so.

We scored 19 goals in our first 5 home matches that season. Averaging nearly 4 goals a game (4-1, 2-0, 6-1, 4-0, 3-0).
We didn't fail to score at home until 28th Feb (0-0 v Port Vale).
Definitely what we should be aiming to repeat this season!

West Brom 0 Blades 3, opening day of the 1989/90 season. Deano & Agana scored and it was the first unveiling of the luminous yellow shirts. As United appeared out of the tunnel, a collective 'WHAT. THE. FUCK?' went up from the crowd.

Them were t'days. Bassett's urchins didn't give a fuck about tradition etc. and it was a truly exhilarating time to be a Blade. We finished second in the Second flight that year, culminating in that unforgettable day in Leicester.

My favourite too. Reg Brealey was near us in with the fans on the away end. What a start to that season and................what an end!!

Reg Brealey was in the away end thinking "This is the best Blades side in a generation. They've even got the potential to actually go on and win something for the first time in 65 years. Now what can I do that will really f*** them up!?"

No doubt which was the worst start to the season: 2-2 draw against Hereford in div 4. Was working that day but the boss let me go early because we weren't busy. Remember at the end a crushing sense of how bloody long will it take us to get back to the top flight from here?

First game that came into my head was the Sunderland Borborkis debut.

Having said that, surely the Man Utd 2-1 trumps it on merit?

Blades 3 Southampton 1, first game of 1971-72 season, first game back in the top flight and straight to the top of the table – where we remained, incredibly, for weeks. We looked the business right from the off and were even better winning our next two games, including a memorable 3-0 thrashing of Leeds.

Mine too. We were awarded a penalty early in the game (at the Kop End) for a handball. Woody sent Eric Martin the wrong way to give us the lead. Salmons made it 2 with a header from close range. Just after half time, Brian O'Neil pulled one back for the Saints. John Flynn made it 3-1 heading in a Woody corner.

I went to all the home games that season (including both cups) and missed only 3 away matches (Everton and Arsenal due to family holiday in Ayr also Chelsea because it was a midweek match) and missed one away Cup match (West Ham)

The game at Manchester United a few weeks later remains one of my favourite memories, despite losing 2-0. Gates closed at 2pm and 60,000 packed into Old Trafford on a very warm September day. We were top of the league (where we remained despite the defeat) and Man Utd were second. And of course it took that famous goal from Best to separate the two teams. TC was absolutely brilliant that day and as I happened to be living over there at the time (in Poynton) I was very proud of the Blades in the pub in the evening when all the Man U fans were saying what a good team we were and what a great player Currie was.

I really enjoyed our 3-0 win over Watford in 94 after relegation from the Prem. I was only 10 at the time and couldn't really really remember playing in the lower leagues before so when we got relegated and romped past Watford in the first game I thought "it'll be easy in this league. We'll win every week". How wrong I was but still have fond memories of Mitch Ward's screamer. Also enjoyed the 3-1 win over Swindon the year before (were we briefly top of the Prem?) Remember Jostein Flo being unveiled at half time as our saviour to replace Deano. Again, how wrong can you be. Also loved the 2-0 over Sunderland because of the return of Deano as much as owt else.

Remember when we played Liverpool on the opening day, the last time we were PL? It was an early Kick-off. When Hulse scored, we were top of the PL, a fact not missed by the fans when we sang "We are top of the league".

Not the best game (Gerrard, cheating bastard) but memorable.

I enjoyed the Watford game. It was the last game I ever attended with my Grandad, who had been a Blade since the 1920s. I too thought we were going to walk the league after that...
