Saturday will be the 29th competitive meeting between the clubs with both teams having won 12 each with 4 draws.

The first ever meeting was Xmas Day 1916 in the Midland Section - Principal Tournament, a tournament set-up during WW1 as the Football League and Cups were taking a break. Chesterfield (at home) won 3-0 that day. It didn't take long to exact revenge as the following day SUFC beat Chesterfield 4-1 (at SUFC).

The first meeting in the Football League proper was 07 Nov 1936 at Saltergate and attracted >26k fans. The League Division Two game ended 2-2.

The first meeting at Bramall Lane was later that season on 13 Mar 1937 with SUFC winning 5-0 in front of 28,248 fans.

The highest attendance for a game between the two clubs was 04 Mar 1950 at Bramall Lane when 40,975 saw SUFC win 1-0.

The last meeting between the clubs at Bramall Lane was in fact our last league match on 03 May 2015. Infront of 26,078 people, goals from Marc McNulty (34) and Ian Evatt (51) produced the 1-1 draw.

Sheffield United's last victory over the Spireites came on 28 Mar 2012 with Ched Evans scoring his only ever career Hat-Trick

At Bramall Lane Sheffield United have won 9, drawn 3 and lost 3 against Chesterfield

For the second league match in a row that we are only on a par with our opponents, i.e. same number of wins as defeats.

Thanks Matt.

That's a stat that could use some explanation.

Why did we pull > 40k in March 1950 for a game against Chezzie?
Was that the season we finished third and lost out to the unclean on goal average? Perhaps that figure was the norm for the era.

I don't bloody know... Ask Darren :D

Edit... YES -
An event that was much talked about in the city of Sheffield for many years was the way the promotion race from the Second Division was won. Going into the last game of the season, Sheffield Wednesday needed to beat Tottenham Hotspur to clinch promotion at the expense of their local rivals Sheffield United. The resulting 0–0 draw meant Wednesday won promotion by a goal average difference of just 0.008 – a 1–1 draw would have left the two great rivals level on points and goal average, and a unique play-off match would have had to be played.

Why was it a "Goals Average" and not a "Goal Difference" back then? And would that make any difference in any crucial goal difference deciding seasons i wonder?

Sorry, wasn't asking anyone specifically, just throwing it out there.

Anyway, keep up, Dazzlers banned for greasing super pigs wheels.

have I missed something? Is Darren really banned from the forum for something?

Thanks Matt.

It was that season, but that was also an era of very high gates. The previous season featured the highest aggregate league crowds of all time.

Crowds boomed after the War and then fell away, mainly due to the increasing prevalence of TVs.

My first match between the sides was the friendly at Saltergate in January 1971 (Alan Hodgkinson's last 1st team appearance). Ex-Blade Tom Fenoughty's 1st minute goal won the game for Chesterfield and then for 30 odd years I saw us lose to them every time! The matches were as follows;

April 1980 - Blades 0 Chesterfield 2 (Salmons, Moss)
Nov 1980 - Chesterfield 1 (Bonnyman) Blades 0
Dec 1980 FA Cup replay - Chesterfield 1 (forgot the name of the sub that scored) Blades 0
Dec 1982 Chesterfield 3 (Henderson 2, Wilson) Blades 1 (Trusson)
Jan 1989 Blades 1 (Agana) Chesterfield 3 (Bloomer, Morris 2)
March 1989 Chesterfield 2 (Waller 2) Blades 1 (Bryson)

Then at last!
August 2003 (Kevin Randall's testimonial) Chesterfield 0 Blades 1 (Morgan)

August 2007 (League Cup) Blades 3 Chesterfield 1

also saw the last 4 competitive games in which we won twice, lost once and drew once

Why? We both finished on +19. We scored one more but conceded 1 more too.
We scored 68 and conceded 49 so our goal average was 1.388
Wendy scored 67 and conceded 48 so their goal average was 1.396

They pipped us by 0.08 in goal average

What I meant was that Revolution said on GD we would've gone up. I'm not sure that's correct.

In that 4-1 game, I had Ched to score a hatrick at 16/1and blades to win 4-1 at 28/1 as two separate bets. They wouldn't let me do it as a double or I'd now be eating steak off a hookers ass.
