I know this one might split opinion because I've spoken with mates about him in the pub in the past and some loved him and some hated him.....

I've just been on the national forums and see the Portsmouth fans are delighted with Michael Doyle and have given him glowing references for Saturday's 3-0 win against D&R. Apparently Doyle commanded midfield, broke up everything that the opposition threw at them in midfield, he won loads in the air and on the ground and when possible he looked to get forward as well.

I remember him in his prime with us and I can relate to all of this. I don't think he was a bad player and personally felt that a United team with Doyle in it was generally a better organised one. The majority of his game was the unattractive stuff that didn't always get the immediate attention of the fans. I am glad to see he is doing well anyway, that level might be the right level for this stage in his career but I personally think that he had another year in him as a blade and I was gutted to see him pushed out of the door. I agree with the transition at the club and how we needed to change our style of play and stuff but every team needs a solid work horse and I think Doyle was ours.

Pompey are indeed happy with Doyle, but like a lot of the Wilson/Wier/Clough regulars (many of whom remain) they'll look like footballers in the divison below. And that is the crux of the problem. Doyle has had too many 5/10s for us and only then struggling to get that.

He's a decent midfielder and is in the right place. i.e. not at Sheff Utd.

In the air? Are we talking about the same Michael Doyle ;)

A player of his ilk is badly missed in our team, however Doyle's time had passed at this level. He had some dodgy spells but I wish him all the best. He'll be a great asset at L2 level.

His anticipation when the ball was in the air was terrible. When the ball bounced he'd regularly run right under it having completely misread it.

Sorry but who cares? Doyle isn't at our club anymore and that's for very good reasons.

I am guilty of this. I am always watching former Blades to see how they get on especially then ones who underperform (that would be most then:D) to see if it was something that we did wrong with them. Love him or hate him, Doyle was a good servant to the club for a few years and as rare as it is in modern day football I do think Doyle loved United and wore the badge with pride, I don't think he was just playing for a team and picking up a wage.

I think Doyle and Davies are both decent signings for 12 months for Pompey to help them get out of League 2. However, I think at this stage of their careers, it was right for us to move them on. I'm just a bit disappointed we've not brought in more pace and power to replace them. Early signs from Woolford are not great but I hope he improves. I also hope Edgar will shore things up a bit at the back. Good luck to them but I maintain we were right not to keep them on.
