My biggest surprise is that so many people are surprised about us being beaten yesterday.

I don't profess to be a footballing genius, however, as soon as I saw the squad yesterday, it was pretty clear that we would not win the game. The fact that we were butt fu**ed by an ordinary league 1 side was somewhat disturbing, but there was no way that the squad picked was going to get a result from that game, nor will it get a result against the majority of agricultural L1 sides.

The ONLY possible positive that can come from this embarrassing mauling, is that hopefully, NA has learned the significant and obvious deficiencies in the squad and will be in big Jims office right now demanding the funds that will help him in the transfer market ...... preferably before Saturday !!

The Sharp & Adams front-line is never going to work in this league and the inclusion of Baxter in CM meant that the midfield would not work in L1 either.

The defence including Collins, McEvely and Mcfadzean was simply a disaster waiting to happen and George Long needs a strong confident defence in front of him in order to get some confidence.

Woolford, at this stage, does not seem to bring anything we don't already have, and with few options on the bench since Scougal & Reed are proven to be lightweight in L1, NA was found wanting in his first attempt for a while, back in the agricultural wilderness of L1 .

In short, Nigel's first test was an embarrassing failure; his confidence in players who have been proven to be underperformers in League 1 has been demonstrated to be a significant error of judgement and I can only hope that the surgeons knife will be wielded both quickly and dramatically on this squad or we will be continuing our residency in the footballing wilderness for another season.

I was "told off" last season on here for being too pessimistic and advised to wait until we had played 10 games to see what happened. My point here, is that after those 10 games had passed, we were already playing "catch up" to the automatic teams and regrettably, a poor start really does take some making up if two or three teams make a good start. You do have to have an exceptional squad to make up for a bad start and the question that you have to ask yourself is ..... do we actually have an exceptional squad at L1 level, not in terms of skill and potential, but in terms of effectiveness in this league !?

I would venture to suggest the answer is no ..... :(

We can only hope the Board are in a position to panic and allow him to bring in several new players.

I'm not sure that's realistic given the size of the squad and wage bill.

Adkins has made a rod for his own back in giving the captaincy to J-Mac and praising Collins as a great pro. He'll be loathed to rock the boat too much.

I ventured to suggest before the game that we would lose 1-0 (ha!) and that I had no confidence in the defence Adkins had selected. I was berated in the shout box for negativity...

I really don't see how he can turn it around.
He has already highlighted that you need 5-6 players in a team that can head the ball in both defensive and attacking situations
He already knew that we didn't have one at the club capable of doing this.
He loans one player capable of heading a ball (Sammon) but he is a forward - and not a first choice forward.
He identified their long throw as a potential danger
Either none of the useless fuckers listened or they are too fucking useless to do anything about it.

How the fuck can +ve Nige do anything to change that squad to counter the weaknesses without binning off half of the dross and replacing it with blokes with bollocks and an ability to compete?
And that's just to get to any level of competition not even remotely getting to a point of bossing teams.
Given FFP rules and the millstone of the set of no hopers in that squad he won't be able to shift, he's got fucking no chance.

Nigel Adkins is now facing a near impossible task to steer us to promotion. Despite the positivity we all knew how woeful our defensive players are. Personally I think I was sucked into believing by his positivity. I don't envy him the job he has on his hands

I think its a very pertinent point that there has been little interest in any of our squad other than Murphy.

Regrettably, that tells a story regarding the quality of our squad !

Good post mate. I was surprised that we lost 4-0, very surprised. Not surprised that we lost, but just massively annoyed. Cant believe we are gonna be in this league for another season after this...........barring a minor miracle.

The only thing I'd disagree with the OP with is length of time he thinks it takes to sort a transfer...if NA was to go into Jim's office and demand funds to buy 2/3 players there is now way things could move quick enough to get 2 players in before Saturday....unless wheels have already been in motion before the Gillingham game.

Would have imagined Wigan would have been Surprised also. hope they the fans dont give up after ONE. admitted terrible game give the bloke a chance if we had won the game 4-0 we would have thought hes done his job promotion no problem but we didnt lets get over it and get on to the next game if nothing changes say in the next couple of games fair enough have reason to complain one game neither makes you promotion or relegation candidates

What needed to happen:
Remove at least 10 players from our squad, preferably closer to 15. Either by selling or releasing(when applicable). At the same time build a squad, cherry picking the best from league one with both our supposed investment and any fees we get from selling the dross as mentioned. This process needed to begin 6-7 weeks ago and nearing completion by todays date.

What has actually happened:
Stuck to the exact same squad, buying 3 arguably poor signings in positions we didn't need, then crossing our fingers and hoping the rest will miraculously become better players and come up with 20 more points.

It is pretty clear where we have gone wrong.

What about the loan market?
There must be quite a few keepers and defenders we could sign on loan from prem and championship clubs,eg Bamford,Afobe (MK Dons).
I think the scouts and Lee Turnbull should get their act together, and quickly!

May I suggest you join the Predistions League because 23% forecast a draw and 77% forecast an away win; precisely Zero out of some 60 S2'rs forecast a Home win.

You are something special mate if you were so sure we'd lose, then again.....hindsight is a wonderful thing, especially for some.

We needed a striker / goal poacher, everyone was on about it last season

The pessimists are at it again woody and I think that's a record for us 1 game yes 1 game and we are written off are they for real!!. it was a bad defeat and might be a record first match drubbing for us(over to you silent).we have a new manager do you want him sacking already or are we going to give him a chance to. Idea,s into practice

Are football supporters at all capable of avoiding an overreaction? Get a grip ffs!

It's been one game, we are still two defenders short, played poorly on the day and motivated opposition had our pants down. It happens.

I can think of three examples where sides were well beaten on the opening day and went on to win the league. Of course there is no guarantee the same will happen with us but the point is it's been ONE GAME!

Don't be daft. The season is over.

Goerge Long needs a transfer to some mediocre Conference side.

Clough left us all a bit bewildered with some bizzare decisions / actions . Adkins may well have started off doing the same . I think it may take to the JTW to sort out the side , and in the interim hopefully not drop that many points . We cannot go on the situation of all out attacking football , as we havent the solid defence or strong midfield to do that .
Its back to the drawing board for Adkins , and its no good anybody saying we have 45 games to go , and its crazy judging the side after one match . We are in a mess.

Unfortunately for us blades fans , weve been there , done it and got the tee shirt with our inept , tactically poor , easy roll over players.

Is it over reaction , in our case maybe not . Is it being pessamistic , maybe not.

Adkins will have learnt alot about the players yesterday , and also perhaps learnt something about himself .

Still the right guy , and he will get it right , but we are again in the hands of the board to do the right thing and release finances for the right quality players , and Adkins has to be cock on with any ulitimate signings .

long has been ordered to play the ball out to messers collins n mcceverly standing out in the full back positions . that is a car crash waiting to happen & potentially a goal scoring opportunity every time. longs only fault is saying no to his boss. i did it once & was escorted from the premises. NA has made his centre half pairing part of his leadership group, one as captain, when every single one of us miserable moaners were asking for 4 centre halves. It cost Clough his job & NA has already said the squad is not good enough for promotion . I think he just found out how far off it is.

i guess 5 seasons in league 1 is just not long enough for some people. l'm being positive like the gaffer wants us all to be & united in wanting rid of honest tryers who no one else would have. We all knew we needed 2 at least centre halves & made a big mistake making mcceverly his captain, when he just isnt good enough. collins looks like he will fall over the ball everytime he has it. baxter as a central midfield 2 in league 1 , having a laugh. sorry but I think he has a much bigger job than he thought. the tea lady needs the sack then for not doing what we all thought she would
