Pt.1 of settling a debate with fellow blade 'metalblade' (don't know how to link user).

I am saying that I'd reluctantly sell Murphy for £5m and Done for £2.5m, especially now we have Adkins and a seemingly top scout on board to find top players with the £7.5m we achieve. He disagrees. I am now just really curious who would agree with me, and who would disagree.

Not long ago , in the dark distant past , you could have bought the club for that .

A poll to settle a debate ? Ffs grow up

But Bart it's more important to be right than anything in the world didn't you know. And as proved with the General Election recently, polls are the way to do that.

But that' the premise of the post isn't it? If we got a crazy bid in for him, should we sell him?
Yes that is exactly it. It's not a post on the realistic nature of the bids, because they're not realistic. It's what to do if we did get the bid, as this topic was raised in another thread.

A bit of a pointless poll as we'd receive nowhere near the figure quoted if he was sold.

A more realistic poll would be "Would you sell Murphy to Leeds if Adkins was given all proceeds to strengthen the squad"?

I'll ask you again who would you replace him with ?
Would their club be willing to sell ?
Would the player be willing to move ?
Real life isn't football manager on the X box and £5m in the bank will not get you far if no one is selling. If keeping Murphy was the difference between promotion and another season in league one his value to us not his value on the open market would be much greater than an imaginary £5m.

Oh no it's not this fella again is it..

You are consistently missing the point. Look at what we're debating here. We are debating whether most blades on this forum would sell Murphy for £5m, and as you can see from the results, most would as I predicted (albeit I was wrong with regards to Done). We are NOT debating what would happen afterwards, as that is somewhat more difficult to approach and something that needs expert knowledge. As for the irrelevant topic that your now raising, i'll answer it just for your satisfaction and piece of mind even though;

IDK as I have no knowledge nor experience of the transfer system and no contacts or scout network.
YES IMO
YES IMO

The underlying point your whole argument rests on requires huge knowledge of how the transfer system works, all of which or most of which I suspect you do not have, therefore you can't make silly predictions and presumptions of which you are currently doing by asking those two questions and having this mind set that you seem to have. Therefore completely invalidating your argument.

The problem is not whether Murphy is 'worth' £5M or not in today's market. Of course £5M is way over his valuation. But if the fans weren't convinced that the funds would be reinvested in the team they wouldn't be happy with the club receiving that inflated fee, would they?

My go to example for this is always Yohann Cabaye at Newcastle. He was sold to PSG for I believe around £25M, on the face of it a great fee. But Newcastle both couldn't and weren't willing to replace him - it would have been hard to replace him in the time allowed anyway, even if they spent the entire £25M and anyway Ashley and the board weren't interested in big money signings to plug the gap. Newcastle subsequently struggled and while the bank balance looked healthier the team suffered despite the huge fee.

Closer to home, Nick Blackman would be a good example. Again, we received an offer than on the face of it was too good to be true - around the double the fee that we had paid six months earlier, for a player whose chief threat was from the penalty spot. But it wasn't worth it to us. When Blackman left he took our entire goal threat with him, the season fizzled out and years later we're still stuck in this godforsaken league. Suddenly doubling our money doesn't look so great, does it?

I mention these examples purely as an academic exercise, I have no idea if the current board would be willing to reinvest a £5M transfer fee.

barnyblade, perhaps you could provide us with one example where a club selling their best player worked out well for them? I bet Spurs fans still celebrate the day they got a huge fee for Gareth Bale? No....I thought not.

In league one terms you need look no further than Rochdale selling Matt Done to us. Had they kept him they would have probably finished above us with a spot in the play-offs.

Yes cash in the bank can look good on a balance sheet; but football is played on the pitch.

Many many teams sell their best players each transfer window otherwise transfer windows would not exist. Simple as that. I doubt all those clubs doing so are all in the wrong are they? No, I don't think so either.

Whoo hooo a poll proves Barmyblade right all along so lets go sell our best players before we have any replacements. Sounds like the scenario last summer sold Maguire and no adequate replacement found all feckin season, result another season in league one. Only in S2 eh ! deary me :(

I honestly find it very surprising that any SUFC fan would advocate selling our best players, even for large fees. Remember how well we did after selling Deane and Fjortoft, Jags, the Kyles, Blackman.....even Harry. The list is endless!

It is entirely impossible to separate whether selling a player for £X is good business from considering who the replacements will be. Football clubs exist to win games and titles not collect money in the bank. History has shown that SUFC more than most have a terrible record in replacing good players.

Out of the 'many many teams to sell their best player each transfer window', would you care to mention a single example where it worked out well for that club in the long run? It should be easy, right?

I think thread is great.

I mean we have got every reason to optimistic for the new season, a new manager who will bring a very positive attitude to the entire club with him. A board who seem willing and desperate to bring success to the club, improvements and investment being made to the clubs infrastructure. It all seems pretty good from where I'm standing and I can hardly be described as the happiest camper in the sunshine band.

Still what better way to remove a bit of positivity that banging on about and creating a poll over a theoretical, vastly overinflated bid for a first team player.
