Woody's hat-trick!

GOAL - v Portsmouth (a) 30.9.70 Woodward's first in the 78th minute was a 25-yard drive which rose into the net past the helpless Milkins.
GOAL - v Portsmouth (a) 30.9.70. Seven minutes later Ley upended Dearden outside the Portsmouth penalty area, Barlow touched a short free kick to one side and Woodward drove fiercely into the net for his second goal.
ASSIST - v Portsmouth (a) 30.9.70. A minute later Woodward broke away again. Milkins dived at his feet and the ball rolled away for Reece to run forward and push it into the goal.
GOAL - v Portsmouth (a) 30.9.70. If Woodward had been robbed of his hat-trick then, there was no stopping him a minute from the final whistle when, once again he galloped off on his own before unleashing a tremendous shot.

Do you remember who scored Pompey's goal?

Yes Munks ex SUFC? They went 1-0 and the Pompey fans topk the piss out of me as I had a Blades rosette on. (It said Blades). They weren't laughing at the end though!

Some nice views of the Lane too in the 60s and 70s

This has been put up in the last few days and brings together many of the great man's goals:

I think my favourite moment is Geoff Salmons shaking his head in disbelief at 4m32s.

I remember the two pompey away games well. Two 5-1 wins at fratton park midweek games.I was in the boozer (cuthbert bank now closed down) results came on news about 10-30 there was no match coverage. In them days cuthbert was my regular watering hall. Spent many a good hour in there including world cup final against Germany.the landlord closed at three but allowed us to stay boozing and watching England win great afternoon that was

My god, some absolutely stunning goals in that collection. Maybe it was his calm and down to earth demeanour, his goal celebrations were modestly understated (well, maybe not the one after the Chelsea goal at 3:30!).

Where did that goal in the pouring rain at White Hart Lane go that used to be on youtube ?

Someone is going to update the video by adding more goals plus some of his assists and his goal at Spurs should be included. Not sure if he is near to completing the video

When you actually watch these clips the following come to mind.

1. He often hits the ball with the outside of his right foot.

2. He had tremendous ability to hit a ball hard and accurately consistently.

3. Watch how often he alters his stride before thumping the ball. It was this accuracy/power combination that is so effective.

4.. See also how he had close control. The first touch was often a bit 'loose' but the defender hasn't got that either, after that Woody has everythiung under control and the defender doesn't get a sniff.

I like the way he takes his goal against Clemence? (Liverpool) hitting it hard before the keeper can cover his diving arc (ie he puts it hard under the body), having first checked as he knows the keepeer is going down. If he hits it straight away Clemence gets it, so a half check to the right and before Clemence reacts it's too late.

My they should be teaching his technique up at the Academy. Just wonderful to watch. Shame they are not in HD!

The headed goal was great considering he never headed it!!

The things that came to mind to me watching that (great compilation) were:
1. It was the first time I've seen him with other than grey hair!
2. I'll never hear again a goal described as "...and with gay abandon, he clatters it with his right foot"
3. We were lucky to have him, and I'm chuffed he was part of the first United team I saw
...UTB

Hope the Prince et al have seen this. That's what we want: top flight opposition and quality players. Oh, and some proper bloody red and white striped shirts.

The celebration at Chelsea has always intrigued me. I was on the opposite end (the Shed) and all the Blades were congregated at corner of the end that Woody runs towards. Who was he giving the fingers up to? Anyone at the end of Stamford Bridge recal this?

Another that comes to mind is the great pass from Steve Cammack. Cammack was a player that never set the world a light and yet there was a perfect cross field pass in the top league. If we saw one of our current players do that in the third tier we 'd feel we had discovered a world beater.

Just shows how far we've fallen

And how good is that delicately weighted through ball from Currie to set Woody up for that thunderbolt?
Brings tears to my eyes to think we used to see that every week.

I assume you're referring to the goal against Liverpool.

Given that Woodward had to stretch ever so slightly to control the ball, it must go down as one of the poorer passes of Currie's career.

Nope. Referring to the one against Derby at 3:50. Receives ball from Woody, flicks the ball up with his left and then a lovely cushioned half-volley with his right back into Woodwards path for a standard thunderbolt.

So with special thanks to WalthamstowBlade for providing the original idea and much of the footage, and to Silent Blade for his superb assessment of Woody's career, get the pop corn at the ready (its nearly 40 mins long so you will need it!), here is the extended version of our tribute to Woody. Some of you get a mention so you may with to view in full screen or on you tube site for the last bit. Enjoy!

We realise there are some other games that were televised but we have not managed to find the footage for. It anyone does have anything and can assist we would appreciate.

Excellent work. Watching it on the tele via the Apple TV.

That's a wonderful video. There are goals on there I never thought I'd see again, including Colin Addison's winner against Everton in the Cup on a great day to be a Blade.

As soon as I saw Woody's goal against Blackpool in 1969 I could remember seeing it "live" and I also recall watching it on ITV the following day and spotting myself at the front on the John Street Terrace. It was almost as good as the previous year when I appeared in a photo in the Sunday Express in the background on the Kop celebrating a Willie Carlin goal against Sunderland.

At the age of ten/eleven it doesn't take much to make your day.

Anyway, great stuff and thanks to all concerned.

.

Weren't you aware of the YTV 100 goals video (which included that Addison goal against Everton) produced in December 1993? I remember it was advertised in the programme for the home game against Liverpool on Boxing Day (Woody came on the pitch during half time and got a warm applause from the crowd). The YTV had underestimated the demand and the SUFC club shop had sold out their stock of that video in just a few weeks

I wasn't aware.

When I took on the present Mrs Shala she came with parents attached and every alternate Christmas there's a three-line whip which dictates schlepping 310 miles to spend a few days with the in-laws in Kilcreggan, Scotland.

I recall listening to that game in their front room overlooking the Firth of Clyde.

I have a copy of it on DVD which MobileBlade now has access to. He may be able to make it more widely available.
Happy to burn onto DVD if anyone wants. Probably cost a couple of quid to cover cost of dvd and postage. PM me.

Think if tried to put on You Tube will be taken off for ITV copyright. That Woody video can't be viewed in Germany because of my liberal(!) use of Rose Garden.

That game against Millwall in 1968 was Ted Hemsley's debut and Willie Carlin's last game before he was sold to Derby. Carlin was a crowd favourite and his sale was very unpopular. On the Tuesday prior to the Millwall match he'd scored a terrific goal against Derby at the Shoreham Street end, hammering a shot into the roof of the net from the edge of the box. At the first home game after he'd left the Kop sang - mournfully - "Willie Come Back" to the tune of "Baby Come Back" by The Equals which had been number one in July.

The commentary on that Millwall game is by Danny Blanchflower (who makes a bit of an idiot of himself by calling into question Carlin leaving the free kick for Woody to take immediately prior to Woody floating said free kick onto Addison's head for our goal). Blanchflower had an idiosyncratic style of commentating and one of my mates had us all in stitches one day after a Wednesday game had been shown in which John Ritchie, Wednesday's expensive centre-forward, had missed opportunity after opportunity. In his best Northern Irish accent, my mate kept repeating the little phrase Blanchflower had said over and over again: "Ritchie...CHANCE...WASTED!"

In one of the Derby history books it was said that Willie Carlin was approached by Brian Clough before that Blades v Derby match in August 1968 and Clough said to him "I hear your boss (Arthur Rowley) doesnt fancy you" which made Carlin wonder if it was a sort of a bribe but it didnt put him off from scoring for us (as you have described) in that match. A week later before training John Harris came up to Carlin to let him know that he is wanted in the manager's office. On his way to see Arthur Rowley, Carlin was wondering if he was in some sort of trouble but was surprised that Rowley had a visitor in the office and it was Brian Clough!

Clough asked Carlin "Fancy coming to Derby?", Carlin was surprised by this and told Clough that he had just moved into a new house in Sheffield. Clough said he will drive him to his house to discuss the move with Mrs Carlin. As Clough was driving Carlin to the house, Clough was singing "Who wears the trousers?, who wears the trousers?"

On arrival at the house Carlin asked his wife "Shall I move to Derby?", his wife replied "What? Now? We have only just moved to this house". Clough then went over to discuss the move with Mrs Carlin which surprised Willie who then said "Hey, it is me you are trying to sign". Clough replied "I have just signed you, now I am talking to the wife"
