In the time before substitutions didn't he go in goal when our keeper was injured/sent off? It's a double shock for me as he not only was he about the same age as me he looked a lot fitter

He went in goal a number of times.. (subs were allowed at that time, but teams could only name 1 sub, and it would almost never be a keeper)... he went in goal when Rodney Marsh broke Tom McAlister's leg.. think it was the first time he was ever beaten... and wasn't it an own goal, anyway.... Silent will remember that one.

Oh boy :(
Woody is my all time favourite Blades player.
Back in the 70's I went to Derby, we got a free kick on the far side just up from the centre line. Alan put the ball down, stepped back, and lofted a long ball over the goalie and in.
A few minutes later we got another free kick, same side but a few yards further forward. Tony Curry took it this time and did exactly the same as Alan, looping the ball over the goalie and in.
We ended up losing 3-2 but those goals are still as fresh in my memory as if they'd happened yesterday. It was said of Alan that if he had a beef with you he'd cross the ball so the laces landed on your head.
He could also play in pretty much every position. It was when he left us that we plummeted to the fourth division. He will be sadly missed.
RIP Woody :(

If Bert remembers correctly Woody was born at Chapeltown, as was Bert. The Hallamshire Maternity Home.
Bert's memory is impeccable as usual.

I was born there also, and whilst having a bit of a one way hug with him at the 125 dinner I mentioned to him that we were both born behind Chap Baths.

He laughed heartily at this, which was nice of him given that if a tipsy stranger hugged me and told me they knew where I was born, I'd sprint hard in the opposite direction.

Lord knows what he would have commanded in the transfer market today. My Dad and impossible to impress Grandad used to purr when he was on the ball, and I was priviliged to spend my formative years watching him and the boys of '71 from row E on the BLUT.

What a player.

Silent, I'm sure our Blade-related existences aren't quite vicarious, but somehow kinda parallel. If I lived it at Bramall Lane, I'm sure you did too. If I can't remember it, I know you will for me.
One day, in gratitude I'll buy you the biggest pint you ever had, then I'll shuffle off knowing my memories are safe with you! (and I know Woody will be at the heart of them.)

I'll never forget Woody's goal in the game against Liverpool in September 1974. United had been under the cosh for about 75 minutes but had kept the score at 0-0. Currie emerged from the left-hand side of our penalty area at the Lane End and with his left foot sent a long curving pass which landed just over the half-way line and in front of Woody. The Liverpool defence, as often in those days, was too square and Woody was away. When he got to the area he let fly and the ball was in the net before Clemence could move.

In the video that Russ posted on "page 1" Woody says that he remembers his goal against Liverpool. I wonder if that memory is of the goal described above.
Recall a couple of occasions when he pretended to stop after glancing at the linesman pretending he had been caught offside, the defence pulled up looking across the pitch towards the linesman while Woody kicked off on his own one on one with the keeper.

It's rare to see one-on-one with the keeper these days. It might be time playing tricks on my beautiful memories of those days but Woody seemed to do it on a regular basis.

I remember Woody already in the team when I started to go down to the Lane as a young nipper with my Dad,it was 65/66 season. It was Woody and the younger lads in the team that stood out for me..Woody,Len and Gil Reece along with Birchenall and Mick Jones...After Relegation, what a time to be a Blade, watching him and TC and the others, great times..I've forgotten more Woody goals than I remember to be honest..he always seemed to smash one in from 25 yards..He has to be the best Corner kick specialist I've seen...every time we won a corner we knew there was a good chance of a goal..Flynn,Colquhoun,Tudor,Addison,TC,Mick Jones and many others benefitted from the accuracy of a Woody corner or cross...sometimes he wouldn't need any of them and score direct from the corner...Another thing about Woody..nobody had a bad word to say about him...Players,Fans,Opposing fans..everybody,even Wendy fans respected him...RIP Woody..thanks for all the great memories.

Is there a story about him sitting on the ball? I half think I might even have seen him do this.
No, it was TC in the 5-0 win against Arsenal in Sept 1973. I remember Woody twisting his ankle after trodding his foot on the ball in the first half of the 1-1 draw against WBA in the 1972-73 Texaco Cup. He got carried off. Wasnt fit enough to play in the 5-0 defeat at Liverpool and missed the 2nd leg of the Texaco Cup tie. Came back for our 1-0 win against Man U scoring a penalty in the last minute

Woodward sat down on the ground, near our corner flag in the game against Arsenal - when we were 5-0 up, which prompted TC who was in possession to sit on the ball (to repeat Alan Ball's prank the year before).

Found another televised match in which Woody scored (didnt realised it was televised until today). It was the 5-1 win at Pompey in August 1969

Wasn't there a strange sequence of results against Pompey in that season and the next when we won 5-1 at Pompey, they beat us 5-0 in the cup and we won the next couple of games against them 5-0 and 5-1 ?

IIRC you are nearly right. We won in Sep 70 at Fratton Park 5-1 my local game (I lived on the IoW then) and first ever away Blades game.

The following Jan we played them in the Cup and lost 2-0. The same day as the Ibrox disaster. Actually we have a habit of losing to them in the FA Cup when otherwise we have been the better league team.

I think it was a it more dramatic than you say, I'm sure we did them by 5 goals in 3 occasions over 2 seasons and they did us 5-1 at least once

Just checked, we did them in 1969-1970, Pompey 1 v 5 Blades, Blades 5 v 0 Pompey, Pompey 1 v 5 Blades ,

Woody's hat-trick!

GOAL - v Portsmouth (a) 30.9.70 Woodward's first in the 78th minute was a 25-yard drive which rose into the net past the helpless Milkins.
GOAL - v Portsmouth (a) 30.9.70. Seven minutes later Ley upended Dearden outside the Portsmouth penalty area, Barlow touched a short free kick to one side and Woodward drove fiercely into the net for his second goal.
ASSIST - v Portsmouth (a) 30.9.70. A minute later Woodward broke away again. Milkins dived at his feet and the ball rolled away for Reece to run forward and push it into the goal.
GOAL - v Portsmouth (a) 30.9.70. If Woodward had been robbed of his hat-trick then, there was no stopping him a minute from the final whistle when, once again he galloped off on his own before unleashing a tremendous shot.

Do you remember who scored Pompey's goal?

Correct. I went on the train special to Pompey for the FA Cup match in January 1971. Looking at the programme before the match , my dad pointed at Mike Trebilcock's name in Pompey's line up and explained to me that he scored two goals for Everton against Wendy in the 1966 FA Cup final and Blades fans see him as a hero! He scored Pompey's 2nd goal in our 2-0 defeat and I was upset at us being knocked out of the FA Cup as it was my first time watching a FA Cup match and I had dreams of us going all the way to the final (am still dreaming of this!). A week later we played at home to Pompey in the league and won 2-0 with goals from John Tudor (his last home match for us) and Tony Currie (despite claims from Eddie Colquhoun that TC's shot had hit his leg before the ball went into the net)
