Does anyone know was the better centre forward? 50's stalwart Alf or 20's leader of the line Bert?

Menlove Bottom,

as the tabloids would have chirruped in those less enlightened times.

If they'd played together (football I mean) and had tabloids existed.

Wasn't his name Arthur Bottom (Buttock to his mates)? I think he went to York City and played for them in an FA Cup semi-final in the early 50's

When I was a kid and I asked my dad who had done something he used to say Bert Menlove or Harry Shevloff (??). Any ideas who Harry was or did he even exist? Never even realised th Bert was a real person. I just thought he was inventing names.

Hirsch Shevloff, known as Harrington or Harry, was living in Sheffield and was naturalised British, in 1933 according to a google search. Not a single thing other than that , is said about him, other than that he was Russian by birth.

Joined us from Wendy in 1949, aged 37 and missed a penalty which cost us a match. We got relegated at the end of that season! My Wendy supporting uncle was telling me about him!

Saw him play Silent. The Wendy were taking the piss over this one big time. He lacked speed and his one saving grace, if you can call it that, was, that like Charlie Williams said,"The man can go past , the ball can go past but man and ball will never go past me"I would estimate, that were he playing today, a very early bath would be the result.

I think we should sign both. Along with Mick Anus and Kevin Testicles.
