I stand corrected. He has scored 4 goals in 18 4th division games and none in his last 10 games at that level. Clearly that move to Juventus can only be hours away....

Whereas Matt Done scored 1 league goal in his first 120 league games.

Those kind of arguments always amuse me: find one very rare occurrence (like someone not scoring many goals in their first few games and then going on to score lots of goals) and then argue that that very rare occurrence is likely to happen again.

You may have a point Darren, were that someone specially selected just to prove my point. However that someone in this case is Matt Done who we appear keen to hang on to.

Go on then I will randomly pick another player.....Jamie Murphy, 1 goal in his first 18 league appearances.

Now of course I cant predict how Diego D G's career will pan out but I'm just not quite so keen to bin him off as others appear to be.

I am sure there are many more forwards arising from youth teams who fail to score goals at a senior level and then disappear into obscurity. Thing is, because they disappear into obscurity, one can't name them (though Ironside J springs to mind).

Of course, it's not certain that DDG won't make it at a senior level, but, at the moment, the evidence suggests he won't. United to have to act based on the evidence, not in the hope that he might prove a one in a thousand.

Can't fault that (acting on evidence). However the evidence is that he is a young player (19years) who has been out for 18 months with a career threatening injury. He has scored league goals (albeit league 2). More to the point he is our player who the indications seem to be would be happy to sign for the new manager. So I say (for what that's worth which granted isn't much) let the NA keep him ( should he decide to) and see how he develops over the coming season.

Also there seems to be a polarity of argument. The (no goals in 10 games) let him sign for Juve brigade (yes that's you Darren, that is!) and their counter argument to anyone suggesting that we keep him, that we must be arguing that he starts all games and is our major strike force for the season.

Diego is on the brink of it all going tits up for him. Let us hope for him and us that he finds his confidence and doesn't end up rubbing horns with Adkins too.

Actually, if you read the thread, you will see that I say it's probably worth giving him a year on a modest wage and seeing if he makes a breakthrough next season and if he doesn't release him then. I just thing the hype around him is ridiculous. All the evidence suggests he is now a player of limited talents. The fact that he may have been great as a 16 year old is neither here or there.

I appreciate the career threatening injury is very sad, but rather than that being evidence that he will come good, may be it is evidence that he won't? Such injuries often leave players permanently worse than they were pre injury.

Well we appear to be along similar lines then. See how he develops this year and play it from there. Last season was his first season back following the injury. Hopefully NA being the man manager that we believe him to be will bring out the best in Diego (and the rest of the team) and we can resume hostilities in 12 months time! ;)

Obviously if he fails to develop as hoped we can simply pack him off to Juve with all our good wishes!...........

The interesting thing is spotting the ones who does have the potential to make it. I don't think we should write off all young strikers based on dry scoring spells. Most of the "evidence" should be his attributes and attitude, not just early performances and stats.

Matt Done's early goal record was mentioned. So how about our other forwards and their goal records in their first couple of seasons in senior football?

Michael Higdon
    • 2003/04: 11 apps, 1 goal
    • 2004/05: 21 apps, 3 goals
    • 2005/06: 27 apps, 3 goals
    • 2006/07: 28 apps, 3 goals
Marc McNulty
    • 2009/10: 9 apps, 1 goal
    • 2010/11: 4 apps, 1 goal
Jamie Murphy
    • 2006/07: 2 apps, 0 goals
    • 2007/08: 17 apps, 1 goal
    • 2008/09: 32 apps, 3 goals

All improved the following season. If you look at last season's top scorer list of this division you'll find that only a couple of them had good scoring records as teenagers.

Diego will sign a new contract early next week, family are impressed with Adkins and his ideas for the coming season! The only reason he wanted out was the poor relationship with Clough! Sounds like a whole new atmosphere at BDTBL.

That's OK then. I had real doubts about NA myself, but now I know that he has had a good old chat with Diego's Daft Dad and the rest of the De Juve family (and a few mates, perhaps) and got their seal of approval...

This makes no sense. What does your point have to do with what you're replying to?

Clearly it means that because Diego has given his seal of approval to our new manager he will honour us with his presence next season. Let the church bells ring out throughout the nation.

And sing Hosannas. Don't forget the singing of Hosannas.

Beacons on hilltops, street parties, the Queen addressing the nation, messages of goodwill from world leaders. Hallelujah.

Didn't Done play Left back/left midfield most of his career before being moved up front at the beginning of last season?
Correct he was a bloody full back!

Exactlyo_O......

Don't tell me......Murph was a goalkeeper......

Maybe Diego could be the answer to our CB issue. Seriously though if a player has talent which numerous managers have identified in Diego then surely he is worth holding on to. It's not as if we have to buy him is it.

Just out of interest exactly what evidence have you got of his dads 'daft' quotient? I've spoken to him a couple of times at the Lane and he seemed perfectly pleasant, level headed and just wanted what was best for his lad with no unreasonable expectations. Having said that his shoes were huge and that spinning bow tie!

And..... can you imagine a 19 year old wanting to involve his dad in his career decisions! How ridiculous! Nearly as ridiculous as our new manager NA recognising that a young player such as DDG may want to involve his father!........

I would imagine Tevez will be relieved he wont have battle Diego for his place up front next season for Juve

I imagine he won't. This would be the Carlos Tevez who scored only 1 goal in his first 11 games. Yes he was younger and playing at a higher level but I'm not suggesting DDG is C Tevez. The comparison of goals scored as a young player is there though.

What would you do Worksop? Get shut of DDG? If it wasn't for those meddling kids we would have won the league!

Probably does to Diego and his family though huh

...and that, of course, is all that matters.

Personally I would do without Nigel Adkins. Our club should be managed by a committee of Academy players' parents chaired by Diego's Daft Dad and assisted by the bloke who said he was DiMaio's dad. It would give us a real continental feel and all the lads would get a run. That, after all, is the raison d'être of the club, isn't it?

It's crystal clear that NA also recognises that the Young Maestro has an attitude problem, unless of course you are kidding yourself that the juxtaposition of Diego and "attitude" in his most recent interview was a complete coincidence. If so, you must be as daft as De Juve Sr.

Lol. As I thought....No evidence of daft dadness!

Merely a 'juxtaposition' in an interview about fixtures and a final Q relating to DDG.

NA 'As you rightly say he's a talented player.......Get him in see him on the training ground, take e'm away and like with all of the players, we'll asses what we've got and take it from there, I want people with the right attitude the right behaviours and the right ability to do well for Sheffield United".

When you say crystal clear, are we talking as in beyond reasonable doubt or balance of probabilities? Or is it just a general rubbishing as clearly he has an 'attitude problem'?

I don't know the lad myself but cocky 19 year old, who'dathunkit! never met one of those before! What he needs is a good manager who can get the best out of him......
