Some People say Dooley did a good job at United. Others say different. I don't know which is true.

What I do know is:

- Dooley played for Wednesday
- Dooley managed Wednesday
- Dooley never played for or managed United
- Dooley was a life long Wednesdayite, even after they fired him on Christmas Eve
- Dooleys family are all Wednesdayites. His grandson hasaconviction for hooliganism at a Wednesday match
- Dooleys is the only statue in the country at a football ground that is not of a player or a manager

Even if he was the greatest executive of all time - and I doubt that - there was no reason to build a statue of him at the Lane. There are 50 Blades players I'd have honoured before him.

And if people think he served both clubs and is deserving of a statue as a result, fine. Stick it in the town centre.

I believe Manchester United have a statue of a man who played 100 games for Liverpool outside their ground.

How many times did he pay and go through the Turnstyles to support United .............................. just wondering

Or was he being paid everyday "in service" - ya know, like a job

The money he raised for the club when he was Commercial Director, and he was regarded around football as one of the great innovators in revolutionising external funding, Probably kept us out of administration in the 1980s. I don't know how many on here were going circa 1985-88 when we were averaging crowds between 8-10k I know I was.

I'm not worried about his Wendy connection or his family. But you're right, for a paid football club executive to have a statue is bizarre.

He will have done good things for United, but ultimately it was his friendship with Kevin McCabe that sees his image cast in bronze.

His connection with both S2 and S6 , having Derek Dooley Way should be enough for all Sheffield . The bloke actually was a good , honest nice guy , and great ambassador for SUFC .Not many around like him these days , connected with football clubs and life in general. I don't think its right and fair bringing DD into a thread , relating to the Jessica Ennis Stand debacle . Totally different kettle of fish. Against statues anyway , but we are were we are with that one , but lets not knock the dead , who actually were a credit to the city.

Come on Worksop, Nelson was actually getting paid by the admiralty when he got shot you know.

He hasn't got a statue at Bramall Lane ...................... :)

Now if you could let McCabe have details of Nelson's Quartermaster, he would knock up a 3rd Statue for him, he likes admin guys, its what real football is all about

never understood why a football stand was named after a woman who can jump a bit and throw a spear, and can run
never seen her with a ball
and her stance on moral issues
lucky she comes from a sport ,athletics that has never had one iota of controversy over wrong doing

I was going then. I met Dooley and discussed many things about the club. I will bare my arse on the town hall steps if he revolutionised anything about us.

The beauty of being right is that there's only me gets to see my Nobby's.

If Derek Dooley hadn't lost a leg would anyone have ever heard of him ?

Debatable... scored 46 goals in 30 games in division 2 for the 1951-52 season then 16 goals in 29 games in the 1st division before losing his leg. It is possible that his goals would have dried up in the following seasons if he didnt break his leg. He was a hero of my uncle Pete (1927-2009) and I have been told by older Wendy fans that Dooley was very much a battering ram type of player who didnt have much skill. Dave Bassett and Neil Warnock would have loved to have him in their respective teams but doubtful if John Harris would have him a regular in the team

I can't think of a worse tribute to someone than naming part of the inner ring road after them. And it's the part where all traffic is funneled into, regardless of whether they are trying to get to. In fact, it's now commonly known as "Fucking Derek Dooley Way" as in "I was trying to get onto the Wicker, but no matter which route I took I always ended up on...."

Unless, like that other 'national treasure' from the long-forgotten Olympics, you take drugs, advertise 'Corn Mith' and can put both hands on your head at the same time.

And yes ..... I would have taken him back if he was cleared of the charge on appeal.
UTB & FTP
Oh yeah, that appeal which was going to get him off because some reporter had found new evidence, whatever happened to that?

its odd, even for Italian renaissance painters most of whom will have been dark - the Holy family are shown looking pale I think.

so they can't blame us northern europeans for making them look like 'us'.
