They couldn't hide. They were focused on by the anti Ched campaign. If they had done nothing, they would have been portrayed as condoning rape. They had to make a commercial decision as to what was best for their business/reputation. And - shock horror - they may actually have felt strongly about the issue.
But they still went public with their concerns .......... like they say any publicity is good publicity. They could have made the same decision as is their right to do behind closed doors but chose the cheap publicity route, one of Pincheys colourful shoutbox quotes would best describe this lot.

Because if they had done it in private no-one would known they had distanced themselves, which, from a commercial perspective is the whole point.

It really amazes me how myopic people can be when it effects something they care about. Jessica Ennis is effectively targeted and asked if she approves of being associated with a club who are going to employ a rapist. Even if we make the very dubious assumption that Ms Ennis only cares about her commercial reputation and ability to earn money and doesn't give a toss about rape per se, it's bleedin obvious that she would publicly disassociate herself from the club in those circumstances.

No we were going to let a rapist train at the clubs facilities, it was never said we were going to employ him at the time. Let's not stop a bit of hearsay justifying sponsors using any means to get cheap publicity at the clubs expense though.

they could have easily hid but they wanted their names in the papers for cheap publicity. They should have just done what Red Tooth did what Nikes donw with FIFA and just said we are aware of the situation and are following it closely , we will comment when and if there is something to comment on.

As it was they dragged our club through the mud unnescserily

Using the FIFA comparison, I've nothing but contempt for Budweiser, Nike, Hyundai et al. Utter cowards.

I always saw the Ched moral argument as finely balanced but in practical terms it was madness for United to pursue it. As such I can respect Jessica Ennis for her business sense or her moral stand. It was probably a mixture of both that informed her decision. Fair dos.

You really think it was all about getting "cheap publicity" for Jessica Ennis? Like she really needs that?

And we clearly were planning to sign him if he was good enough. Let's not re-write history.

Presumably then you and Ted Danson also won't get anything associated with Redtooth on, given they didn't choose to stay silent either? Or are they ok, because you agree with their stance?

As I understand it John Holland sell posh cars and I have no idea what Redtooth and DBl Logistics do. As such, I can say I will never buy a product from any of those companies :-)

couldnt care less about her before she had the stand named after her but now I dont like her because of the way she and the other sponsours handled the Ched affair, they should have all kept their mouths shut until anything had actually happened. They could have said all they wanted to the board within the confines of the boardroom and made it clear they would distance themselves from the club if they signed him but they shouldnt have done it through the mainstream media. Her, charlie Webster and John Holland Sales all went down in my estimation with that episode. She had sod all to do with the club anyway

What you really mean is you wanted the club to sign Ched and no one should have made a negative comment on the signing of a convicted rapist out on license. Am I warm? I am sure that Jess, Charlie Webster and John Holland car sales care deeply about your mock disappointment in their standpoint based purely on it not agreeing with your own.

I think there's a bit of a difference. Ennis probably forgot she had owt to do with United until she got a phone call asking her about Evans. Webster, by contrast, went hunting for cameras and microphones to offer her opinion too.

Webster works in TV, you do what you know.

The amount of abuse Jess Ennis-Hill got on here and Bladesmad and Twitter around the time of the Ched Evans farce was and is embarrassing.

A Kevin McCabe inspired omnishambles from the beginning, from naming the stand after a Athlete with only a tenuous link with the club to thinking he could re-sign a convicted rapist with no one raising an eyebrow. If you want to blame anyone blame KM.

Great decision from the club to re-name the stand. Nothing negative towards Jess Ennis, I think everything she did whilst her name was up there was spot on. It was just a poor decision from the club in the first place to try and somehow get a financial gain off the back of somebody else's brilliant achievements.

Fuck that, if you want to blame anyone blame Ched and the moronic fans who abusing people for not wanting themselves or the club to be associated with a convicted rapist.

no, they came out and said nothing has happened yet, if something happens we'll make a descision

Yes I wanted to sign ched, but "no one should have made a negative comment on the signing of a convicted rapist out on license" is bollocks, there was lots of people saying negative things which I didnt have a problem with but people who have a business relationship with the club should have shut the fuck up untill anything had happened and as for "Jess, Charlie Webster and John Holland car sales care deeply about your mock disappointment" 1 . I dont care what they think and 2. Id imagine john Holland does care about what me or other fans think as otherwise why would they be sponsering us?

When you say they, do you mean Ched and his supporters don't you?

No, well both. People who knew nothing about football were telling me we'd signed ched and how awful it was, most people not SUFC affiliated thought we'd signed him by all the publicity and disliked us for it. Jess Ennis and Webster were big players in keeping this story going.

whats wrong with

"no comment, obviously I dont condone rape in any way, Come back and ask me again if we sign him"
I think there could well have been pressure on her from the get go from the media to announce that she will disassociate herself from the club if he signs. If she came out with that, it would come across like she doesn't really care.

"no comment, obviously I dont condone rape in any way, Come back and ask me again if we sign him"
Why should she have to do that once she's been pulled into it?
Not commenting would be seen to condone him training at the cub and you know as well as I do how that would play out in the press and how it could negatively effect her profile.

Webster, by contrast, went hunting for cameras and microphones to offer her opinion too.

She became a patron of Women's Aid in 2010. It's the job of their press team, and her role, to push on behalf of that charity. She became a patron of the Community Foundation in April 2013. Where you have patrons of multiple charities, it's standard practice to check to see if there may be conflicts of interest before you invite them to be a patron. They normally won't accept if it means they can't continue do act as a spokesperson for their other interests. It's yet another example of the strategic incompetence the club displayed over this whole sorry saga that nobody thought this would ever become an issue.

Sorry, but no they didn't:
“Our relationship with Sheffield United will continue,” Martin Green, managing director of Redtooth Poker and lifelong Blades fan, tells Goal. “We’re a sponsor of Sheffield United Football Club, not a sponsor of Ched Evans.”

But had the club mentioned that it had signed Ched it would be too late to apply pressure, which is what they were doing. You can rightly argue over how they did it but I am guessing Webster did what she knew which was used the media (shock, horror) and Ennis answered a question when asked (shock, horror). Whether they are associated to the club (I don't believe they were in paid roles and Webster resigned in any case) or not their view is as valid as yours or mine. I think the root of some peoples misplaced anger is the club was never allowed to slide the signing of Evans by because so nasty people made some comments about it. Happens I agree with them by the way.

I stand corrected if thats what they said but they didnt get hounded for condoning rape did they? and if that quotes true then they supported him whereas a simple "no comment" or "speak to my agent" would surly of been less supportive and atracted less attention. Plus I honestly dont believe that Calendar and the other news programmes would have vilified the media darling Jess Ennis for a no comment

My problem is that any of them could have gone to McCabe privatly and said look if you sign him the shit will hit the fan and I'll go to the papers and make a big fuss about it and make it clear why Im leaving but they didnt, they did it through the papers

What does it matter if they didn't? The key detail here was they issued an opinion on it. If you're criticising John Holland et al for not staying silent on the issue then you surely need to throw Redtooth under the bus too?

thats fair enough, Red tooth you wankers!
