No, we want two centre-backs who are significantly better than Kennedy and Collins.

i like kennedy think he can be another maguire, but agree possibly with a replacement for collins as he will be 32 come sept & had all but a year out. i wouldnt mind taking a punt on that CB from shrewsbury who made L2 team of yr or tom parkes from bristol rovers heard good things about them.

but anyway back on topic im not against billy sharp as he will get goals & is a great story but just think money better spent elsewhere

Kennedy could only be another Maguire if he were six inches taller and had a reliable knee or two.

As for Sharp, what is the "great story" of which you speak? I haven't heard it yet...

We also need a proper centre-forward - a leader of the line. I would still like to see COG - Bringimback!
What about Jay Emmanuel-Thomas up there leading the line?

Pinch.

Are you allowing your obvious dislike of resigning previous players to cloud your judgement at all ?

Can you suggest a player with a CV as impressive as B S. who is
Available
Cheap
Wants to come here

??

Given your stated loathing of all things "hoof" why the "need" for a target man (albeit a mobile one) ?

You are overlooking the fact that Sharp has been very good at leading the line WHEN THE BALL IS PLAYED IN TO FEET as he is quite strong for a little un. Accepted that balls played over the top to run on to would be pointless, but that is what the wingers and Done are there for.

The best and most successful football we have played in recent times is when that giant of a man who gives Usain a run for his money was played as a lone striker. Yes none other than Jose Baxter !!!

The blueprint that is required is, contrary to popular belief in these parts, NOT a "target" man at all. All that this has EVER done as long as I can remember is to promote and encourage hopefull and at times aimless balls to a lone man who, 95% of the times loses possession or never gains it in the first place and the ball ends up coming straight back at us. Hopelessly inept tactics that should by now have gone well away.

I swear some of our fans would have us going back to the "good" old days of hoofing from the kick off in to touch as far down the pitch for a throw in as was possible, Perception being we have "gained" yardage.

FFS that's American football not the football we know and love.

Possession is 9/10 ths of the law. Period.

IMHO

This from someone close to me, who, as part of his role as scout for a Premiership club, happened upon Billy Sharp, several times last season - Still useful at Championship level, slow as fuck, but hard working, holds ball up well, makes defenders work hard to contain him, very enthusiastic, still has predatory instincts in box. Easily do a good job at L1 level.
Chew on that Pinchy :-)

Exactly the profile of front player required to complement Done.

I will state here and now that a pairing of Sharp and Done would work very well in this division.

But is Sharp signing though?

If we sign a player like this, it does force me to question our ambition. It didn't work for him before, he's older and slower now so the likelihood is that it will not work this time. Big no from me.

Not so much ambition, more common sense, we've got urgent needs in basically every other position and do not need a striker at all

You know something?
No! Over the years we have had rumours about Osvaldo Ardiles, Michel Laudrup, Paul Gascoigne, Neville Southall, Nick Barmby plus many more coming to us. I prefer to wait for the signing to be made official in the papers (or on sufc.co.uk) . Dont think we will know who is coming and who is going until next month

To be fair to Sharp ,that fuckin coaching genius Blackwell had him running everywhere except where we needed him. The same prick who signed premiership quality Leon Britton so we could kick it over his 5 foot nowt body all game.

I think he'd be an improvement on the Sharp of the past spell, for as Sitters highlighted he was badly mismanaged. My main hesitation on this though is that it feels quite short-term - he might be ok in this league, I doubt he could offer much one year from now in the Championship. I feel we could assemble a squad this summer that sets us up well for the future. I don't mind the occasional player that's just here to get us out of this league (and Sharp might be one of those), but ideally in the same approach we've had to Adkins I'd like us to get people in who can ideally do well in the Championship too.

Less than a week ago people were crying to do anything just to get out of this league... Tell me again what the problem with signing Sharp would be?

Th

That is a fair shout Jim.

McNulty and Done could also be a very good pairing.

Jury's still out on McNuts but to be fair to him,he never got a run of games under Clough. Seemed to play well, score a belter, start the next game, disappoint, dropped, good sub performance, repeat.......

You generally have 4 strikers and IMO the priority is still a COG / Davies type but with Done, McNuts and Che we have a decent start point already.

can you quantify that please ?

Im racking my brains trying to remember this succesful football but im coming up short

This is the key for me, while another striker wouldn't go amiss we have more pressing concerns like the CB situation plus midfielders who can actually score and create, aswell as do all the other things a midfielder is supposed to do and not just be good at one thing and then be shite at another aspect of being a midfielder. We don't have many, if any players who can create apart from Murphy, who some seem to think we'd be alright getting rid of, it would be fucking madness to get rid of him.
