Everyone said the same stuff "looking forward to the rest of the season", "finally got a good manager in charge", "best manager we've had in a long time" etc...

How did that turn out? Adkins (if it is indeed him) won't be here long enough to stamp his mark on the club (Clough never got that chance either, you can't work miracles in a season and a half), he (Adkins) won't get time from the fans, and the fans will eventually force the board to get him out the same way they did Clough.

Its not a new manager we need every other season, its stability as a club. Lets give the new manager time.

How many likes can I give for this post?

I am totally underwhelmed by the board's behavior over the past week.

Things never change. The irony - Grocer Jack now playing on the radio. If we're not selling then we're sacking.

You are right of course, indeed even Weir was widely welcomed as well. However the one thing Adkins has that none of our recent managers had is recent good form in this division. He's done it at a small club he's done it at a club of a comparable size to ours.

I think for that reason alone he will get more patience than Clough, who had a reputation as a steady hand and seemed determined to protect said reputation at all costs.

Barring an absolute disaster I think most fans will recognise what Adkins is capable of given time, in the same way that most fans gradually realised that Clough was going to plough the same furrow come what may.

Does Adkins understand this league 1 better than Clough , to get out of it . Although i agree with you , Adkins will get time , he will get next season . Thats how we work , wrongly .

I also love all of this 'Hail, the Savior' shit being pedalled.

With Wier, he was a breath of fresh air, a new approach, experience at Everton, No2 to a soon-to-be-utter-fuck-up-at-Man United.

This was with a squad far stronger and capable than the current one. He got the toe-end. Yeah, what a cunt. Hopeless, no idea, what's he fucking playing at? Thank fuck he was sacked. Etc.

Then Clough ... ohh, we hope he signs for us. He will bring players in (yup, and players soon fucked off) and we bought dogshit with what is said to be fucking squillions but was possibly fuck all. He took his time to make his mind up like. We were all bobbarring ourselves that he might not come to the Lane. Of course, he had Maguire, Coady and a few other notable players and the team hit form. He is the Messiah! Semis an' all!

Of course, 2014-15 was abjectly disappointing and everyone is burining effigies of Clough. Negative Nige, short memories, targetting systems in need of calibration. When he got the boot, people were stood jizzing into the pockets of McCabe like he'd suddenly discovered a £18m cheque down the back of the sofa and pledged to reinvest it into the club. Like he does.

Now it's Adkins.

Can I just predict this:

1. Disappointing start to the season
2. 10th at Christmas
3. Fucks sake, this is no better than Clough
4. SUFC 0-2 Burton A
5. Brayford injured, a-la Ebrell
6. Sack the cunt. Why didn't we get Robinson. He's the one. All hail the Messiah ...
7. etc ...

Best of all:

8. Undisclosed signings of Barry Oddnobs, just to make the fans feel good
9. A pissed-off looking Adkins on the touchline
10. 'Negative Nige #2'

How much time ?

It makes we smile when you see quoted,"he got Scunthorpe out of this Division twice" :)

You can't polish a turd. You can't change a full team in one window, the team we have clearly wasn't good enough to get out of this league last season, its a rebuilding job, in the same regards Manchester United was a rebuilding job with Moyes, he didn't even get a full season.....

Managers don't get long to change things round and bring success, wrongly as someone above already said. WE had a "five year plan" when the prince came to the club in September 2013, 2 years in and we're in the same situation as when they arrived, the "five year plan" now turns to a 7 year plan and beyond. Give him a set period of time to get us out (2-3 seasons?) if he fails then sorry, no can do.

Most of us actually expected Clough to be here another season or at least til Christmas. It's not like we had fans running on to the pitch to lob a season ticket in his face like we did under Bryan Robson or it was shoes off in the car park to get rid of him.

Clough would still be here but fell out with the board the other week for whatever reason.

Man U won the league just before Moyes took over, so how the hell was it a rebuilding job?

I didn't.....I was totally underwhelmed when Clough was announced and remained that way until last Monday...

As for Adkins, well only time will tell but he seems to like a 4-4-2 with pacey wide-men playing fast attacking football so compare that to Clough's set up not to concede, 4-4-1-1 then it's a good start for me, on paper anyway!

Can't believe some of the negativity and doom mongering on this thread. Be POSITIVE FFS this is a great day in our history. He will get time, he will get us up auto first time, it will be entertaining football and there will be the Clough fans who want him to fail, that's the way it is. There's always a few

I think Fergie could get the best from bang average players a bit like Warnock in a way.

I mean are the likes of Evans and Smalling really top Premier League centre backs?

What an utter cobbled piece of shite this is, there is no way on earth the board got rid of Clough because of the fans.o_O

You honestly think the hounding Jim got from fans didn't play a part?

We only said those unbelievable unrealistic parks because...

A) a few were drunk
B) he was a big name

We dI n't have tinternet back then, keyboard anger rocks :)

Vidic, Ferdinand, Scholes, Giggs all retired/left. Thats a big spine gone for a team like Manchester United.

Oh we did have tinternet, we had this forum to and everyone was foaming at the mouth with anger when we appointed Robson. Has he even had another managers job since we told him to fuck off?

Adkins has proved before that if you give him time, good times are ahead. The same cannot be said of Clough.

I was in the middle with Cloughy. If he was given more time, fair enough, but he had a lot to do to prove he was the man for the job. If he was sacked, the reasons were clear. He had 19 months here and did very well to drag us away from the relegation places when he came in, so he gets my respect for that. But bar decent cup performances, the rest was a disaster. We didn't want miracles, we wanted promotion. I know that's not an easy thing to deliver, but with our resources in this division it shouldn't have been as much of a struggle as it was. Realistically, we were miles away.

If next season we don't make it, but we'll have at least tried and been close, I reckon we'll be far more understanding than we were with Clough and we're far more likely to give him time. If we can see on the pitch that we're giving 100% and trying our hardest to win the game, that's all we can ask for. That wasn't what we were getting under Clough.

I think after Weir they could have given it to Cloughs Mrs and we would have thought of it as an improvement. For once we've appointed someone who has a good track record at getting sides out of this league, and this time it must be right. No guarentees in the game of course but maybe the board have realised that by getting the manager right the stability may follow and maybe promotion.

..with 'nobs on' I might add.. :D

Clough got the sack because of the total & utter balls-up he made of last season and the accumulation of behind-the-scenes fallouts - simple!
Given the budget afforded to him I doubt any of the other 23 managers in L1 would have done a worse job and churned out less entertaining football. The Board were 100% right to get shot.
Considering where we are I actually think they should be highly commended for being able to attract someone of Adkins' achievements and reputation to L1. The shambles of a takeover at Reading which massively impacted the club's budget and ability to sign players leading to his job becoming impossible has done us a massive favour - do you think he'd even give us a second thought if circumstances had been different there?
It is worth remembering that just over 2 years ago he was unjustly sacked by Southampton, having taken them from L1 to above the relegation places in the Prem. I'd certainly settle for him progressing us like he did them and his eventual successor being of the level of Pochettino.
If anyone tries to maintain that we'd be better off with Clough and his recruitment network limited to Derby reserves, players recovering from long term, career threatening injuries and unproven jocks it may be worth them taking a sanity test.

You honestly think the hounding Jim got from fans didn't play a part?
No, it certainly didn't but if by some miracle it was a minority that got to Jim by hounding him then he needs to leave or not be on social media, it's really that simple.

I could give you a load of reasons why the board got rid of Clough but I haven't got all month, plus I'd rather look to the future with our new man.

he (Adkins) won't get time from the fans, and the fans will eventually force the board to get him out the same way they did Clough.

But that isn't what happened is it? There were some who wanted Clough out, but the poll on here was 65/35 in favour of giving him more time and it was a shock when he went.

I hope Jim Phipps has a bit more about him than to cave in to what was surely a small minority talking to him on Twitter. The abrupt nature of Clough's departure after he did the retained list and made a club video suggest something else happened that we don't know about.

Not everyone was impressed when we got Clough, I wasn't. And I haven't been from what I can remember whenever we get a new manager. Go with all managers after Warnock, as I was too young too understand before him.

Adkins, I will be delighted with though

I didn't say that. I never got the fuss. I said we'd employed a manager with a pedestrian track record. Sorry and all that.......

We've got the right man this time. IMHO.
