Alan Woodward

Speaking of a permanent reminder, time to start to email, and send letters to the club to request the renaming of the Bramall Lane end as the Alan Woodward Stand as a permanent tribute.

If they want to do something positive for a change, this would be a start.

I cannot really add anything new to this thread.

Needless to say the man was a Legend and it saddens me to think he will not be entering the famous Bramall Lane stadium ever again. Being a nipper and watching Woody, Currie, Reece and the rest of the early 70's side I never realised that was a team to be matched against any in the First Division.

Playing and scoring against England internationals and making it look easy. Christ knows what his free kicks would be like if he could take them with that piece of swerving latex that they call a football nowadays - unstoppable most probably.

RIP Woody - a truely sad day for SUFC.

Really, really sad news. My fist memories of BDTBL are sitting in the JS stand hearing my mum screaming "Come on Woody" at the top of her voice and watching her become strangely angry every time he was scythed down (which were many). Oddly, I think its his corners that stuck with me as a kid but none the less what a player he was.

For me Woody is THE Blades legend not just for his commitment to the Blades but how he conducted himself both on and off the pitch.

End of an Era

RIP Woody #7

A true gent, a player that had red n white blood, top man and a truly gifted and talented players.
The word legend is thrown around but as a blade this man was and will always be, to me at least THE legendary blade, I still don't understand how TC, great tho he was beat woody to greatest blades player ever, a travesty in my book.
Missed by blades of a certain age for ever more.
Bye woody RIP a TRUE Blade
Thoughts to those you leave behind.

To this day I have never seen anyone who could hit a ball so sweetly. Nor anyone who could score directly from corners – from either side. And what a deadly penalty taker. So many memories of this great player but for the moment I'll settle for his four goals when we stuffed Ipswich 7-0. RIP Alan.

Thoughts go out to his family and friends, a sad day not just for SU but for football in general, not since he played for us have I ever held a player in high regard, memories will never die, RIP Alan.

Sad news indeed - and a relatively young age.

From memory, the following Woodward goals were televised

The first step would be figuring which are on the YTV video and which are on the old BBC one. Ive copied both onto DVD.

Looking at the clip that Esablade put together, it was heartwarmingly joyful the way Currie congratulated Woody when he scored. There appeared to be genuine camaraderie amongst those players, and Woody and TC were clearly great chums.

Lovely images that should, if anyone has the initiative to put it together, become a celebratory DVD of Woody's career in the red and white stripes.

I have the Chelsea 73 on DVD actually, about 30 minutes of highlights with a sort of directors commentary from TC and Bobby Charlton. Ive also got the 68 Oxford match I think, was on MotD but not the BBC video.

RIP legend, proper footballer, and gentleman. I Was introduced to United early in his career and he was a big part of my footballing education. Was lucky to meet him on a few occasions through Eddie Colquhoun who was a family friend. Was the best striker of a ball I've ever seen and one of the best things he ever told me was his approach to taking penalties "i don't have a favourite other than to strike the ball cleanly. If i don't know what I'm going to do the keeper can't either."

get Jess's name off that stand and let's see woody's name and face from next season.

I've grabbed what clips I can find on youtube and put them together here...great goals, legendary corners and a two finger (well four actually!) salute for the Chelsea fans...

Excellent work.

Ive got a fair few on DVD, if I could send them to you could you add them to what you have?

Hope I see owd Len tonight at our faveorit Italian ,I'm sure me and the badger will raise a glass or two to one of best players I've ever seen .
