When I played football, when a player made a mistake, the rest of the team would rally round them and bring them up. They wouldn't point fingers and have a go at them. There seems to be an attitude this season at the Lane where errors are greeted by a verbal blast from Clough and sometimes grief from other team members.

It's a really odd way to motivate a team. There's also very little talking and boosting by players on the pitch. I'd want my keeper to be talking a lot to his defence, a leader at the back holding the line and encouraging, another in midfield as well. We seem to me, to be lacking all this, and personally I believe it has affected confidence and motivation. Footballers need to enjoy playing and it often seems they're enjoying it as little as the fans.

I think there's something in this. It was one thing Davies definitely brought to the team.

That said, there must be something going on if they can (almost) come back from 3-0/5-1 down.

This is another reason the attempts at Howard bashing are very counterproductive. If he was fully secure in his place I think he could and would do a good job rallying the defence and even the crowd.

Problem is, Howard has been our obvious first choice most of the season, and he doesn't do anywhere near enough talking. That ridiculous attempt of a clearing header by Harris came from him waiting for a call from Howard which never came. Saw the same thing happen on several occasions where he was unsure if anyone was behind him, and despite Howard being closest, there was no call.

I'm also really not down with the manager singling out players for criticism in post-match press conferences. Coupled with screaming at them during the game, it must have an effect on the squad. I fail to see how they benefit from that kind of public abuse. If a manager wants to have a go at individual players, he should do it in private.

IMO there doesn't seem to be much team spirit.. not withstanding the comeback.. it was more a case of 'god this is embarassing' .. there is definitely something wrong in the dressing room.

Warnock was the master of this.

Started from a few in the stands I believe.

So following this to its conclusion wouldn't it be better if the fans never shouted nasty things at the players as well? Isn't that counterproductive?

I'm assuming your on a thread a day until Clough is out diet?

Maybe you should give it rest with your anti Clough posts.

I'm just making a point about how the atmosphere has changed this season on and off the pitch. I'm not a fan of Clough as I've made clear, but if he is sticking around I hope the berating of players will become more private and the attitude and communication between the players will improve on the pitch.

We all want to get promoted and I think the atmosphere is not helping the players.

I want Clough out, and dislike the large amount of things he does. I'd quite happily carry him out of the club myself. But that doesn't change the fact our support although good in numbers, is horrific in actual support. Apart from celebrating a goal, the loudest noise is quite often the groaning at a misplaced pass, and I'm certain the players notice that. I cringe sometimes when we have been quite for a solid 30 mins and then a small bunch of people start with the "making all the noise song"

What  it's not the fans fault?

The problem is that if players make a one off mistake then we can accept. But when they make the same mistakes over and over again despite being drilled in training ( Swindon 1st at the lane) then you'll get pissed off with them...

Surely, if the players don't like the other players having a go at them they would learn how to not make that mistake, such as Howard surely he can learn how to extend his arm in order to stop the ball or can cut off a cross going for a tap in, rather than watch it glide past himself at ease. Howard isn't the only player, but most of the other players, like freeman's are down to laziness and not being fully aware that the ball is coming towards them. If you respond well to a poor performance fans, players and coaches will regard you as a better player, like Murphy did after a few poor games last season. And please stop trying to find other scapegoats such as Davies, the fans, etc because for me its down to the coaching staff, like Clough and the goalie coach. Because I believe many errors are down to tactics and how the players are being coached as we have a bunch of talent full lads who with the right tactics can preform well, but under Clough you'll never get the highest potential out of the lads. As we saw at Derby, when clough was there they were a bottom middle table team and as soon as he left they dramatically improved and they still are. So please wake up and realise where the blame should be placed and not every so often bringing up players to blame and then say its the fans fault because they have the right to complain and criticise and complaining on here doesn't affect the players or managers, you might say something on here and it would make no change to the team. You might speculate about who you would like to see signed and it would make zero change to who Nigel Clough wants to buy. Yes shouting "your shit" out from the crowd would affect a player but in order to be the best of your ability you need to block it out and focus on how to stop it.

Jesus, break it up into paragraphs FFS!

We just need some leadership on the pitch . If Clough could get each player to be leaders in there own way , we would certainly be successful. I think the players as daft as it seems are finally finding there mojo . ( some only came in the JTW , but were thrust straight into the team ).

The recruitment of players and waiting until you get your man , is a good ethos , but not good for promotion in that particular season.

The coaching has been in question all season , especially on set pieces , corners , marking . Clough has to do something about that , and perhaps one of the best signings could be a bloody good coach ( not SUT ).
Clough is very loyal to his staff , so if he stays i cannot see him getting rid of anyone , unless the board do it for him,

This business of the fans affecting the players , i actually think this is nonsense , as each individual player is so focused , that the hub of the crowed should not affect them . 20,000 giving support certainly helps , but individuals , players usually couldn't give two fucks.

Clough will do his football business in the Clough way , in a bit like Thatcher said . The lady is not for turning , with the same applies to Clough.

Clough is here to stay , good and bad . Garner , Crosby . Morgan have to look at themselves in the mirror and step up to the challenge . Simon Clough will also step up , i hope .

The bottom line is , although we finally appear to be professional and business like with good acumen in the board room , we have appeared very amateurish on the football side this season. Clough with a bit of savvy and eating humble pie , can get us back on track , without us having to spend our money ( meant for player transfers ) , on sacking Clough and Co , and paying off contracts.

Forget Atkins , Think Pemberton or Booker joining the coaching team , with the blessing of the board.

Warnock was the master of this.
Some folk like to look back at Colin's reign with rose tinted glasses. In reality warnocks first 3 seasons were absolutely shite, he constantly moaned and blamed everyone but himself and some of the football was terrible. He had time to assemble 2 squads over 7 years. Warnock had a bust up with Barry hayles and Danny cullip similar to clough/butler. Warnock did single players out on occasion I can think of akinbyi and devlin as two examples. My point is some people clamour for warnock whenever we discuss cloughs position yet when you look at it there rather alike

We just need some leadership on the pitch .

From the Star 23rd June 2014

“You can’t have too many captains in a team,” Clough said. “I don’t just want the person who is the skipper to act like a captain, I want as many people as possible in there to conduct themselves in that way. We’ve got a lot of matches coming up and a lot of them are probably going to be very demanding. That’s what you’ve got to prepare for and expect. “So the more leaders that we’ve got out there the better. That’s the way we see it anyway.

“The more captains the better because you’re going to have to rely on that type of mindset at times. It’s what all the best teams have.”

Ironic reading back on it. This was the article - which includes a number of interesting comments.

Cyprus , interesting read back in June 14 , Quote - we would not get a diplomatic incident ,with having too many leaders on the pitch at anyone time , with Butler , Collins , Doyle and Wallace.

Many best laid plans of mouse and men . Just not worked out that way , but the Clough intentions were there. Pity we couldn't have carried them out , or the end of season , may have been completely different.

We have no option to try again . with the required on field leadership qualities , but with a different set of players.

Was it unlucky or poor management . A bit of both in this instance.
