It's a horrific record of that's there's no doubt.

I was about to say Clough was untainted by that record then saw the bottom two ;)

Not just our Play Off record but our "big game" record.

Off the top of my head;

1993 - FA Semi v Wednesday - Lost
1997 - Play Off Final v Palace - Lost
1998 - FA Semi v Newcastle - Lost
2003 - FA Semi v Arsenal - Lost
2003 - League Cup Semi v Liverpool - Lost
2003 - Play Off Final v Wolves - Lost
2009 - Play Off Final v Burnley - Lost
2012 - Play Off Final v Huddersfield - Lost
2013 - Play Off Semi v Yeovil - Lost
2014 - FA Semi v Hull - Lost
2015 - League Cup Semi v Spurs - Lost

I'm sure I've missed a couple aswell!
1981 Blades v Walsall last match of season Lost and relegated
1994 Chelsea v Blades last match of season Lost and relegated
2007 Blades V Wigan last match of season Lost and relegated

Watched all bar one of these matches.

Why am I still going?????

Here's the couple you missed!!

1988 - Play off semi v Bristol City - Lost & relegated

Knew there was the relegation one but I was only born in 85 so that one hasn't happened since I've been following United. Thought we'd lost to Sunderland too but couldn't remember the year (I didn't start going to games regularly till 2001)

On the flip side

1993 - FA QF v Blackburn - Won
1997 - Play Off Semi Final v Ipswich - Won
1998 - FA QF v Coventry - Won
2003 - FA QF v Leeds - Won
2003 - League Cup QF v Palace - Won
2003 - Play Off Semi v Forest - Won
2009 - Play Off Semi v Preston - Won
2012 - Play Off Semi v Stevenage - Won
2013 - Play Off Semi v Yeovil - Lost
2014 - FA QF v Charlton - Won
2015 - League Cup QF v Southampton - Won

all rather depends on your definition of a big game I suppose...

Can't really argue with that to be honest! :D

Why mention the play off semis we've lost but not the play off semis we've won? Or the big cup games we won before those cup defeats?

This appears to be a list of the stage at which we got knocked out of various knock out competitions. OK, so along with 91 of the other football league clubs, we got knocked out of the League and the FA cup in each of those years. Would it have been preferable to be knocked out in the third round?

I wonder whether we're the only football fans whose memory of our most successful cup runs is the fact that our eventually being knocked out further demonstrated what an unacceptably poor record we have in big games?

Edit - started writing before Selly Oak's post - which made the point in a slightly more temperate manner!

Well you can, and I'm about to.

For a club of our size a reasonable expectation would be to be flitting between the PL and the Championship. Perhaps a bit more time in the Champ on balance.

Thus, I would suggest that it isn't unreasonable to expect us to make a final once in a while and actually win a PO final every now and then.

So, in the original list I'd have the following down as. "Failure"

1993 - FA Semi v Wednesday - Lost
1997 - Play Off Final v Palace - Lost
2003 - Play Off Final v Wolves - Lost
2009 - Play Off Final v Burnley - Lost
2012 - Play Off Final v Huddersfield - Lost
2013 - Play Off Semi v Yeovil - Lost

And the following down as "did well to get to that stage" based on how good we were at the time (and 2003 is arguably the hardest one to place)

1998 - FA Semi v Newcastle - Lost
2003 - League Cup Semi v Liverpool - Lost
2003 - FA Semi v Arsenal - Lost
2014 - FA Semi v Hull - Lost
2015 - League Cup Semi v Spurs - Lost

You've missed the Sunderland Play Off Semi from 1998.

OK Play Offs only, in chronological order. None won.

1988 - Play off Semi v Bristol City - Lost
1997 - Play Off Final v Palace - Lost
1998 - Play off Semi v Sunderland - Lost
2003 - Play Off Final v Wolves - Lost
2009 - Play Off Final v Burnley - Lost
2012 - Play Off Final v Huddersfield - Lost
2013 - Play Off Semi v Yeovil - Lost

Given that on each occasion a team only has a one-in-four chance of winning a play off, it's not that remarkable. But we are due a win. Footballing Gods take note.

We aren't due a win. It's not random.

We really must be the only set of football supporters (and I include myself in this) that brags so much about its many failures. We almost look forward to having discussions with other clubs fans about how many more big game losses we've suffered compared to them.

The lady who sells the badges on the corner of Cherry Street / Shoreham Street would make a fortune if she produced individual medals of all those defeats.

Before a match it would be like a Rememberance Day Sunday with all those old, grey haired Blades discussing their own views of those battles. Each one bragging 'I see you've not got the Palace medal, let me tell you about it....'

It's time we all changed our mindset but maybe we get too much enjoyment in discussing our failures.

But when we've suffered so much disappointment, if we risk feeling optimistic we leave ourselves vulnerable to crushing, abject grief when the inevitable happens.

We allow ourselves brief glimmers (half time at Wembley last year - "what do we do?" "I dunno" "Drink... we need a drink") but they all too quickly fade.

Better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all.

11th May, 1968. Sheffield United 1 - 2 Chelsea.

Last game of the season. Relegated...

Remember that. It was a game against Fulham at home a few weeks before that I felt for the first time absolutely gutted at a Blades result. 2-0 up and end up losing 3-2.

Totally agree. But this time round Linz I 've nailed my colors to the mast. On another post I've said that if we can get a positive result in the home leg of the PO semi final I think we'll get promoted.

Mind you this could all be academic. If we lose our next two matches and Rochdale win theirs then there'll be total meltdown. It'll deserve a website on its own of 'where were you when we fxxcked it up to Rochdale in 2015'

Those medals will be the size of a dustbin lid !

Didn't the same or similar thing happen at home to West Ham in the run up as well?
My dad said a notable group of Wendy fans in the BLUT were cheering for Fulham that evening. After the Fulham game we lost 2-1 (Reece) at home to West Ham before winning 2-0 (Currie, Reece) at Burnley and then that Chelsea match

Thanks Silent Blade

This was the year we beat Liverpool at Anfield and also, as you say, Burnley at Turf Moor. In those days Anfield was a fortress and Turf Moor was not an easy place to get a result.

I was at both games! :D ;)

In the Chelsea game I remember Willie Carlin (didn't he score to bring us back to 2-1 with a few minutes left?) running his legs off and trying to lift the others but they were having none of it. :(

For the Chelsea game, it was Mick Hill who gave us the half time lead. Peter Osgood equalised and then Tommy Baldwin headed in the winner with 10 minutes left. My dad said Hodgy was in tears after the game

Thanks for the match report Silent. Looking at those results strange the Wendies were not playing. Seems to be Fulham should have been their opponents. Wonder if it was due to Boat Race. Certainly nowt to do with Sky.

That result at Newcastle for Man City confirmed them as champions. Remember reading a book by a City supporter that even though they'd won the League their rivals went on to overshadow their achievement by winning the European Cup later on that month.
