Well that's 4 screamers in 4 games. We're not closing down the shooters. Something to work on. Though today he seemed to take it very early.

I said that about the Donny game even though we won the match. Although we are playing without 2 proper centre backs, so its not surprising no one is closing down the attackers enough sometimes.

every 30 yarder is going in , sometimes great defences get beat by long range shots, rather they go in games like the last 2 than at wembley

But with the way the balls fly it's important to shut down the shot. I think we're being targetted. At some.point it stops being luck and starts being policy. We might've reached that point.

The midfield needs to close down better. If the CB's leave their man it gives the man on the ball 2 options. 3 men in midfield and teams are banging them in from 25 yards should not happen

Then again you could at some time point a whopping great finger at the goal keeper, today they only had three shots on target......:tumbleweed:

The balls fly like balloons in a hurricane. Only so much a keeper can do. Today at first sight seemed like the best of the lot.

Something for Howard to work on sure, but the main responsibility is.stopping the shot. The other three were after mistakes, even the first one Tuesday. He had a lot.of space.

I don't know about today but he had no chance with the Donny goals

William , i see it is that it is just the way it goes . These screamers 9 out of 10 go anywhere but the net . Would rather get them out of the way now , and not have it in the play offs. These mid table teams have nothing to lose , which can be more dangerous as playing a top 6 team . Just watch Yeovil now they are relegated . Would rather be playing Bristol if I'm honest.

Don't usually get the same mistakes with a settled back 4. Unfortunately something we probably won't have until next season.

From memory the mistakes were Davies against Crewe, unchallenged shot, Freeman not closing down Donny 1, Baxter as a wet lettuce - others may have contributed Donny 2, and not sure about today. He took it very early, sometimes you can't defend it if it's good enough and early enough. Will have to see it again.

We do need to close players down, defenders and midfield should know if you don't give the attacking player any room to shoot he will have to take a different option, we haven't done this enough, but sometimes you have to take your hat off to some of the strikes against us.

Yes and no, we've clearly worked on and had some luck in cutting out the silly goals, from corners, from daft mistakes.

Yes you need to close down shots (like Donnys first) but in many ways you're better off letting teams shoot from distance as the chances of hitting the target and beating the keeper are lower from distance and if you block a shot it can block the keepers view or cause a deflection which beats the keeper anyway.

Not seen today's goals but sometimes you hold your hands up and give credit for a great finish.

Always a voice of reason!

Don't like to dig out a keeper. How many mistakes does any outfield player make in a game ? A keeper makes 1, and he gets crucified.

That said, from where we were sat 120 yards away, in real time, Oldham's second today looked a horrible one for Howard. Hoping TV proves me wrong ...

As up thread Crewe and Donny goals were mistakes imo, great as the shots were.

I wonder if we're being targetted. Have teams seen we don't close down well enough from 25-30 yards and just started letting fly.

It's not as hard to score from this distance as it used to be.

4 in 4 games looks less like luck and more like a pattern.

Let's see if Yeovil blast a couple in from 30 yards.

Their player seemed to shoot very early which is always difficult to deal with. And we watched the flight of some of the goal kicks. The ball was dancing in the air. Side on, which is the angle we're likely to see won't tell the whole story
Also noticeable that he was punching (well) from corners.

I think the flight of the ball was a concern all game.

Assuming we reach a play-off final it's something we really need to look out for. There is always a screamer scored in play-off finals in recent memory and they normally win the game. e.g Wade Elliot goal against us, Dean Windass goal for hull against Bristol city, And the one scored by Alex revell just last season. We need to be closing down the shooters better, or build up a unassailable lead.

Thinking about the play-offs and more generally from our pov when was the last time we hammered one into the top corner? Doyle almost.managed.it today. Baxter scored a great goal at Walsall but that was controlled.

I've mentioned it before but the opposition's number of shots on target has been eerily similar to the number of goals we've conceded far to often. I'm not convinced Howard is all that. The one for Crewe in particular looked eminently savable and how often is he going to let Paul Gallagher score the same bloody goal against him. That was just embarrassing.

I reckon he is still struggling with his back ,he certainly looks uncomfortable when kicking. If we win on Tuesday I reckon Turner will be in up to the play offs.

We were half way up the away stand and to the right of our goal, so was right behind the Poleon shot.

It just sat up nicely and he hit it as sweetly as anyone could.

He hit it early as OP said, but Howard had a full view of it.

What happened, is that it moved to Howards left very slightly just before it got to him and therefore went past his hand.

Think Howard will be disappointed, but the ball defo moved in the air.
