Remember when Long was first choice last season and then Cloughy came in and put Howard in as his number 1 and the defence took on a rigidity that no one had seen all season? The explanation was that now they had confidence in their keeper they weren't as desperate to "get rid" of the ball - there was less panicking.
When Turner first came in for the injured Howard I was reading that he was looking good but it wasn't long before our form downturned and the defence was being described as a shambles.
Now, you'll possibly know from my alias that I'm not a regular at BDTBL (if you know that BC is British Columbia - Canada) so I'm only going on what I've read but I wonder how much having Howard back will get us more back on track? Were there semblances of the defence from a few weeks back in the turnout on Saturday?

Personally, the difference between Howard and Turner is night and day. Turner was very similar to how George Long ended up, with us closing our eyes on back passes. Turner is not a very good or mobile keep in my eyes. Wasn't a great fan of Howard, however since becoming number one he has improved two fold.

Every keeper makes mistakes ,I saw Cassilas the other week and he looked shocking ,but Howard gives defence confidence ,last keeper to that was probably Kenny.

Given Cloughs team selections I wouldn't be surprised if he names Basham as Goaly Wag tonight.
By it's definition Goaly Wag could not be just attributed to Basham because it involves the nearest player to the net being the Goaly and being able to handle the ball :) It's origins are mainly down to kids years ago not wanting to play in the net because:-
a) They all wanted to be Bobby Charlton, Gary Lineker etc. (insert striker from own era)
b) The only gloves they owned were a pair of Mum's gardening gloves which offered very little protection
c) They were all nesh and the balls weighed a ton.

I do like the idea of more ideas from the playground being introduced to the professional game. I'd love to see free kicks given for "Bog-lining", seeing a player substituted because he'd got a "stinger", games going on indefinitely til the owner of the ball had to go in for his tea, that kind of thing.

Agree that Howard probably gives more confidence to the team but i think Long could take his place next year if he improves his handling and awareness while in Scotland.

Goaly Gloves were always those yellow pit ones with the lattice plastic on them.

I think Howard is a decent L1 keeper and benefits those in front. While unspectacular, he is fairly solid and doesn't make many howlers. His distribution however, particularly his kicking at times is sometimes poor.

Turner performed well in his first couple of games but he grew increasingly nervous to the point that it was affecting his perfomances and he became a disaste waiting to happen.

As great as it would for another of our own to come through the ranks, I never rated Long. I appreciate he was thrown in at the deep-end at a very young age, but always looked petrified when playing to me. I'm afraid to say that I don't think he is, or ever will be, good enough to play for Utd again an I suspect NC feels the same given his willingness to loan him to lower standard opposition.

No ..... don't be silly ..... Basham would be too tall to be a goalie !!! He'll go for Reid as goalie wag to fit in with the rest of our dwarf squad !!

How about adding .... Megson getting "panned" for being an obnoxious, ginger, arrogant, snivelling piggy scumbag ?? :p

Until he ran into problems. Kenny's 'brow = Samson's hair

Fucking hell, five posts into a thread and it's not developed into an "Our Fans Are Cunts" rant.

Stop that now, there's an agenda needs filling.
Make this thread an OFAC thread.
Got to watch what i say I'm on Fierys hit list.
Going to get behind them tonight start a few chants off on the Kop.

Oh, I just thought you were really, really old ;)

Attackers can appeal that pretty much every shot that hits the post was 'post and in'.
Option to play on if ball goes out for a corner.
Imaginary stand on one side with no crowd for goalscorers to celebrate in front of.
Teams picked in goalmouth before match. Captain who wins coin toss can choose to pick in turns, by numbers, by ip dip dog shit, or the by the classic what team you support ie blades vs pigs.
Gary Sinclair on PA: 'there are 5 minutes until tea - 5 minutes' I.e. next goal winner

Posters on BM are worrying that Howard could be out for the season. He won't be playing Saturday, according to Clough.

Like many posters on BM I think we should get an experienced keeper in on loan. Mark Bunn was one of the names mentioned.

Three dodgy moments: Early in the first half Turner goes for a quick release and throws it straight to a Scunthorpe player. On 55 mins, Scunthorpe had a free kick that was pumped into our area. It was an easy punch or a cath for most goalkeepers but Turner totally fluffed it, just deflected it down and away from his grasp. On 63 mins he had to deal with a bouncing backpass and hits it along the ground towards midfield, narrowly missing a Scunny player.

He's working desperately hard to earn the nickname "calamity Turner" ! My heart misses a beat every single time there is a cross into our box, or a shot is on target.

We used to call that "First Man Back".
"Goalie Wag" meant there was one designated goalie who was playing outfield but could use his hands when near the goal.
The other option was "Goalie Stick"...fairly self-explanatory.

How about getting a few fans on the pitch for a game of "Wembley", "Crossbar" or "Headers and Volleys" as the half-time entertainment?

:p:pbeats me why they put the net behind the goal, makes more sense to put it in front:eek:
