Remember being at that Burscough game...we were stood at the back/middle of the Kop,which was packed as usual...Your memory's better than mine Silent,as I can't remember the goals or who scored, but can remember us applauding Burscough off for giving it a good go,although at least one of their players didn't take it in the same spirit and stuck two fingers up to the Kop...I could have sworn they played in blue shirts that day but it could have been green like you say,as I know that's their normal colours, and probably it's my memory playing tricks again.
I was playing football for Sheffield Deaf that season (my first season after leaving school), I think SDFC had a free Saturday that weekend so I was stood in the Kop (I had a season ticket in the South Stand as I had bought it before leaving school not thinking that I would be playing for a football team on Saturdays so my dad used the season ticket when I was playing football). I still remember Burscough's kit being green and the the collar looked rather outdated

I'd forgotten the tie had been swapped to the Lane...I remember we made hard work of it but ran out 3-0 winners...we never seemed to do much in the cups back then.

1st round as we were in 3rd division. We were drawn away to them but Burscough were happy to switch venues so that they would get more money.

McPhail at the Kop End and his celebration made my dad laugh. Speight scored our 2nd with a header just after half time and Matthews got our third with a daisy cutter from outside the box
how we could use someone like mcphail now :D

We only wore that kit one season - 75-6 - when we were relegated with 6 games to go having won only 2 out of 36*

* We then won 4 out of the last 6 when it didn't matter anymore.

Darren , lets hope them days are not coming back . The shirt is jinxed . Changed my mind about the look of that kit.

I was there. My dad, myself and two friends had set off from our house at 6am in the morning thinking that it was going to be a very long drive but we arrived at Southampton for 11am!

I will name just the Southampton players. The Saints player on the right is the late Bobby Stokes, scorer of the only goal in the 1976 FA Cup final. Mick Channon usually wears the number 8 shirt for Southampton but it is not him as he has dark brown hair so I think it is Tommy Jenkins

Back to the Burscough match, I remember it clearly because it was one of the few home matches I have missed. I had been sent by my firm to work in Nigeria and I found out the result at the Ibadan Club on Sunday aft when the Telegraph was delivered

TBH Silent, I don't know how you remember I can't remember last saturday...in truth I don't want to remember last saturday, but still you're only half right, Tommy Jenkins eh.......sounds like a character you'd find in the Beano.....and its not him.

Obviously, Bobby Stokes, and Salmons, Dearden and Reece for us, but who is the mystery man?

Jimmy Gabriel?

Just realised that the number might be 9 rather than 8? If it is 9 then it has got to be Ron Davies?

Silent, you're talking yourself out of the answer, it is Jimmy Gabriel.

Very sad what happened to Bobby Stokes, only in his 40s when he died if i remember,

Never forget his goal against Manchester United, always thought Stepney could have perhaps done better.

The Cup finals then eh, ....watch the build up all day, ....draw curtains so no reflection on screen,..... then out to re-enact it about 5 minutes after it was over.

No press photo's this month..... but plenty of newspapers :)

Might bring back a few memories.
Woody's Teddy Boy hairstyle in the Joe Shaw Souvenir Special!, Captain Eddie having a fag in the 1971 promotion celebrations in the Directors box. Eccentric ref Roger Kirkpatrick's strange pose in the photo of Woody's penalty against Watford

Definitely Burscough. Crowd was 14,000 Plus as I recall. I suspect Burscough brought a few as it was the biggest game in their history

I remember that Burscough game. They went for the "Let's kick them up in the air and see how they like it" approach, with one player taking to his role with particular enthusiasm. Really dirty. I don't think they won many friends.

One of the things that really strikes me when you look at the line-ups for Academy games is that relatively few make it through and end up playing professionally.

Compare and contrast - as my old exam papers used to say - the Northern Intermediate League Cup Final from April, 1964. Leeds: Harvey, Smith, Wright, Greenhoff, Madeley, Gray, Bates, Johnson, Belfitt, Lorimer, Lowery. The Blades: Walton, Badger, Shaw B, Munks, Bell, Clarke, Woodward, Wagstaff, Birchenall, Barlow, Disney.

The vast majority broke through to play first team football, some at a very high level indeed.

An eskimo in Nigeria, bet there's not many of those. :)

Fair point, but the competition for places is pretty much worldwide now. In those days it was national at best. Some will make it to the first team, some will go abroad, some will play at a lower level at home, some may even leave the game - though I think the Academies do their best to stop this happening.
