Clough tells me De Girolamo will be leaving the club at the end of his current deal ‪#‎SUFC‬‪#‎twitterblades‬

Rumour has it , that 4no clubs are lining him up with the 2no running , being Southampton and Juventus . Other two Bournemouth and Arsenal . Time will tell if fact , they must see something in him , and all have the money to take a punt and not worry , if it doesn't work out.

i think his head has been turned, he'd been offered a new contract to stay with us, but turned it down. Looking at him and the way the team sets up now, i've no doubts that if he's good enough he could do a job for us - see the likes of Che Adams, Reed, McNulty, Murphy, Scoogs and more recently Done. They all have that enthusiasm, pace, desire and adaptability to slot into several attacking positions when they get their chances and of course they have to also defend, which i'm sure none of them prefer, but they do the hard graft to get the end results like v Colchester, Southampton, Bristol C and Spurs in the last couple of weeks/ Months.

If Diego wants to go, it'll be a real shame for us to see him go, but perhaps a bigger shame for him that he feels that he can get a better deal elsewhere or that he can develop better elsewhere.

Time will tell...

Other alternative is that Clough is putting pressure on him by stating that he'll be leaving knowing that there are no firm offers on the table for him from elsewhere other than York...It might wake him up a little...

Ooh, playing hardball. I like that

Its unlikely but perhaps calling his bluff a bit might work...

His advisors would not be naive enough not to sign the contract unless there was something on the table from another club . SUFC will no doubt know about this . The next move is critical imo for the young fella , in his progression as a professional footballer . He would certainly get his chance at the blades , as well as no disruption in his life , which can happen to a young player when moving from home.
Mr Clough and SUFC cannot be held to ransom , by any player , who ever they are , as this sets a precedent and becomes unfair , creates unrest , to other players especially the younger end , when the matter in question is Diego.

IMO he will make a big mistake , but does it affect SUFC first team squad - No.

Bit harsh, but why do we care?

The guy has not shown he is any better than the 4th Division in adult football. If he wants to go, good luck to him.

My guess is that people care because his name is Diego De Girolamo and he has scored a few goals at youth level. If his name was Derek Diggle, he would be just another youngster with potential along with a few others. And if he was Derek Diggle and he didn't make it in football, perhaps a career in films, eh Darren?;)

Not sure I buy into this. I remember everyone getting very excited when we had a top junior goalscorer whose name was Billy Sharpe.

To be honest I liked what I saw a couple of times I've seen him at junior level and in a couple of first team cameos. I'm sure without his injury he'd have had more of a chance but he did get injured and I'll lose not a minute's sleep if he throws a strop and buggers off.
Look forward to buying my late night kebab from "Slew & DeG's Burgers of quality" when I'm being slung out the Leddy in a few years.

Is York's still the only offer on the table?

He’s been at United since he was 6, I believe.

Wouldnt want to guess the exact figures but the principles are set out here -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_Player_Performance_Plan

According to this, anyone wanting to sign him will be looking at having to pay SUFC something in the region £150k followed by further payments for every 10 league apps he makes.

Three possibilities:

1. DDG is frustrated at the lack of first team opportunities at the Lane and is willing to take a step down to someone like York to get first team football.
2. DDG has no intention of stepping down a division, but is trying to call United's bluff to get an improved contact offer.
3. DDG has offers on the table from a higher level club than United.

I would assess the percentage probabilities of these as follows

1. 45%
2. 54%
3. 1%

Listening to the audioboom clip from today, it appears that you've wildly over-assessed option 2. Clough says it's not at all about that.

He showed at Preston that he could have what it takes against an upper table L1 side, unfortunately we've not seen enough of him - unlike Kennedy, Reed and perhaps Long. So I don't think its harsh to say why do we care. The issue is that the club do obviously rate him to offer another contract, what the details were we don't know, but perhaps they wanted him around for another 2-3 years to see and help him develop.

I'd be happy to see any young player stick around if they want to play for SUFC, but if they don't then let them go.

His advisors would not be naive enough not to sign the contract unless there was something on the table from another club .

True, but perhaps they were calling Clough's bluff..... :)

But then he would say that wouldn't he :)

I think its down to option one, not the money, but guaranteed first team football, which would make the top team option a little baffling. If he can't make it into a L1 1st team then he isn't going to get straight into a Serie A first team either...

A fee of approaching 200k is a LOT of money for any club at the only level he's proven himself at and probably also for 50-60% of clubs in league one - and would any with 200k to spend do so on an unproven kid?

Wouldnt suprise me at all if he ends up at a mid/lower premiership club as a 'punt' for their development squad and we'll see him loaned back out into the lower divisions.

"It's not about the offer, he's rejected the chance to stay so we move on."

I'd say he's well and truly set his stall out, to be honest, Darren. Clough says he won't pick him because Matty Done is ahead of Marc McNulty and Marc McNulty is "better than" Diego.

Just thought, he could go to a team outside of England and we wouldn't get a penny unfortunately.

Still think he's going to rue the day he turned the contract down.

Indeed. I do think there is a bit "he has an exotic name so he must be good" going on here. We have seen that Clough is not averse to playing youngsters in the first team, so the fact that DDG has hardly had a sniff under NC must say something.

Sorry, I meant if DDG is trying to call a bluff, he will obviously not say he is doing that, so Clough can quite vaidly say there is no bluff calling going on, even if he thinks there might be!

Ah, gotcha. :)

I suspect that the other option Darren is that he may sign for somebody like Juve (on the strength of his U18 Italy exploits) and maybe get loaned out to a Serie B side or similar. Can't see him signing for the likes of Southampton and getting much of a chance to play - that scenario makes no logical sense.

If his beef is about lack of opportunities to play for the first team then it's a strange one as nobody higher up the pyramid is likely to sign him and put him in their first team straight-away. Others in our division and below will struggle to pay the level of compo for an unproven youngster. Seems more likely that he has got his nose put out by somebody at the club telling him he isn't better than what's in front of him (Porter, Higdon, McNuts, Baxter) etc, and he has thrown the baby out with the bath water.

If he doesn't want to stay and fight for a place on merit, then - Fuck 'im

Quite possibly, but then that sounds like the bluff scenario I posited - he thinks United will come running after him.

I suspect a young man who believes rather too much in his own legend.

Like Mellis & Slew - fine examples they have been since, eh?

Harry is looking to work on his own demise at Wigan - good job he's got the money in the bank to compensate for not playing football, eh?
