Whitehouse, Kelly and I guess Deano, Hodges
Later Borbokis, Fjortoft and Katchouro

Kelly, Brayford, Jags, Morgan, Kenworthy, Morris, Sabella, Cockerill, Bryson, Deane, Edwards Subs, Burridge, Whitehouse, Brown, Ndlovu, Chief, Peschisolido, Bolton. It may not be the best team I could put out but over the years these were/are players I loved watching in a Blades shirt

I use to put on a bandage when kicking the ball about in the garden because jostein flo wore one. Hardly our most prolific striker but will always remember him.

Loved borbokis too when he signed especially after that debut.

Glyn hodges too. Tried ripping his name off my shirt when he left... Ended up ruining the shirt! Which wasn't a bad thing it was the terrible diamond kit!!

Deane and agana....

We never knew we were out of it, and we never were with these two..

Harry payed flo out of posititon, I remember seeing him play for denmark on the right wing and he was unplayable, and wasn't deano playing on the wing when basset bought him??

Deano could cross a ball as good as hodges... btw..

Near enough though fella

A lot of poetic licence for me as I became a Blade late in life! Though friends would say I'm still very childish where football is concerned.

As a kid I had loads of heroes, most of the players in red and white stripes. As I think back and picture all those players - Hagan, Ringstead,Coldwell, the Shaws, Hodgy, etc etc - it has just struck me how old they all looked. As a young kid everybody looks so old.

As a 66 year old players these days always look old for their age and it's hard to believe they are all so young. If we did remind ourselves how young they all are we would not expect so much.

There are exceptions of course. Reed looks about 12 but plays with an old head and displays maturity way beyond his years.

Then we should remind ourselves how old we look to the players!

No. 1 Hero - Willie Hamilton. My dad had a crush on him I think!! Elegant midfield playmaker with all the time in the world on the ball. As it happens he always looked young for his age until the drink took hold.

My dad thought he was very good. Billy Gillespie said he would come to Blades training session to watch Hamilton's skills. Alex Ferguson said jock Stein raved about Willie but despaired his lifestyle

alan woodward for me.. 'cos he had grey hair early on the opposition fans would laugh at him at first.. 'who's that old bloke'?? they were never laughing at the end!
i seem to remember him once scoring from a corner.. it was just off the planet. we spent all day on the sunday trying to repeat it on Rowlinson field

Who were your heroes as a youngster at BDTBL?
Although i started watching United as a kid when Currie,Woodward,Colquhoun,Field etc were in their latter years at the lane my 1st hero was Tony Kenworthy .
I used to argue with my mate down the street,a pig, that Tony Kenworthy was harder than Mike Pickering!:)
Some years later he was living around the corner from one of my mates and used to talk to him regularly,he was at Mansfield then.

Woodward, Salmons, Colquhoun, Badger, Reece.

Currie never was a hero, he was much more than that. He still makes my hair stand on end when I see him in the car park.

Perhaps I'm showing my youth here but for me it was Chris Morgan. A no-nonsense Yorkshire centre-back, I used pretend to be him in the playground and use it as an excuse to clatter my poor class mates,

Carl Bradshaw was my idol as a 5/6 year old but also liked Deane & Whitehouse. Then ended up playing alongside Bradders at centre half in the unibond league in my early 20's and he had a big enough ego for the lot of us, completely destroyed the boyhood illusion.

I always thought the players at that time were a bit different to those of nowadays but despite the fact he was a builder in a clapped out tranny van he was still full of himself and liked asking the opposition forwards how much they'd been sold for before quoting whatever Norwich paid for him. Saying that although his legs had gone he was great on the ball and his experience meant not many got past him.

Conversely we also had David Reeves (Chesterfield forward) come and play a few games at about 39 years old and he was a top bloke and banged in 7 in 3 games to boot.

Surely with a name like yours you should've seen this coming?

Jeff used to drink in my local and live up the road in 1980's

I was at Newfield school with Jeff in the 80's and played in the same 6th form team as him when he was already on United's books. Not surprisngly, we won that game :-)

amen to that.. i was in the TO with my wife tagging along (was taking her shopping)..she has zero interest in football. i said 'wow.. Tony Currie' ..she says who's that. 'blades legend'. 'why don't you talk to him'.. 'are you fucking insane!'

John Brayford! - I've never grown a beard for anyone before...

...ps. 41 still counts as boyhood doesn't it?

I was in the school year above Jeff and also played in the same team when I was in the 6th form. I was a shit goalkeeper who came in when the regular one couldn't play so I was grateful on several occasions when Jeff played in front on me.

I was a year above them at Newfield

I was in the year below him, so was in the 6th form from 83-85. My lame to fame is that in the game I played in, he had a shot that was parried by the keeper and I knocked in the rebound. We won 3-1 and that got us to the final. Jeff couldn't play in the final (some pathetic excuse about training with SUFC) and we lost :-(

I played against Matt Spring at school. I don't remember him being that good, not pro footballer good. I had a row with him once after dirty game between his year and mine. We won and I slapped him on the back and said "Best team won"

Jock Bryson - slightly disappointed that he's more of a legend for Preston than us.
