I was there, the night Chris Basham did the Maradona turn....

It was known as an Emerson turn among my mates when he did it playing for Middlesbrough.

After a couple of games I described Bash as a non-footballer on what we had seen so far. My word, as a centre-back he is superb. Tonight was as good a performance as I have seen from a centre-back for a long time. He defended superbly, winning headers, tackles and blocks all night. He then showed his comfort on the ball (memorably on one occasion!) bringing it out of defence and getting us moving forward. He looked very much at home against "Premier" oppositipn.

So, top marks mate. I hearby declare you a proper footballer and baptise you in the name of....

Bashenbauer.

There can be no higher praise.
I find myself agreeing with Pinchy more and more as time goes on. And he's spot on about Basham. He looked like about as coordinated as a giraffe on skates at the start of the season, but since he came back into the side he's been transformed. Absolute quality, and we can send ten-bob-boots McCarthy back to Palace on the first Megabus out of town.

Basham looked good pre-season. It does take time to settle in, I'm sure I heard he's had a baby during this season too.

I know it's not an excuse but a possible reason for the settling time.

Anyway.....keep him in that position please!

Totally agree. He was v. poor when he first came but is now nailed on at CB (unless Nigel plays him in goal on Saturday :D)

By the second half I was thinking 'Is he actually better than Maguire?'.

I knew you'd get there in the end.....
:)

It's called a "roulette". Maradona did it a bit, Zidane did it a lot, but Basham's was PERFECT.

Indeed it is sir, but given Maradona was doing it on the pitch before Zidane had even turned in the womb, he probably earned the accreditation.

From hereon, when I'm coaching, it will be known as the Basham Turn.

It will henceforth be called...................

THE BASHAM TURN

The other astonishing thing about the clip of the Basham turn is the pass to JCR, who then PASSES IT BACK without any trickery. Unheard of. TBF to the Jamal, I think this one of his better performances I've seen. He didn't go crazy with tricks and stops and turns and crap crosses. I believe I saw several crosses which actually beat the first man. I'm glad we don't have standing any longer at the lane as I might have fallen over with the shock.

Was JCR injured or was it just a tactical change? He seemed ok to me and you're right he did put some good crosses over.

It was an injury,he got a knock near the corner of the John Street and the LANE END.

How come when I go, Campbell-ryce's crosses bounce off Pluto, Baxter just falls over, McCarthy kicks the ball out of play for no apparent reason and we lose.

But when I don't go Bashams pulling these silky skills out FFS

Can you stay away then Jehovah ?, at least until we are cemented in one of the top two places with promotion assured !.;)

At Swindon, I turned to a fellow Blade and said that Basham looked like a moon, isolated and in a world completely of his own.

He didn't know whether he was CB or midfield and was neither fish nor fowl.

He (The Blade) laughed loudly and accidentally spat some of his pie onto my new coat.. ( no longer Stone Island or my reaction may have been different!)

Last night, Basham was out of this world and if any pie had been spat, it would have landed in my seriously dropped jaw, such was the awesomeness of the excellently named Bashenbauer.

Going forward in that zone is clearly where he is best as an assured Centre back looking ahead at what he can build in an attack

So three thoughts;

One, Basham as CB and say bye to McCarthy
Two, attack from the back with Harris, Flynn and now Basham as we've got the skills as well as the mindset.
Three, watch out for flying pies and dropped jaws cause there will be a few shocks with Bashenbauer.

You know what that tells you doesn't it? Stay the hell away!!

We were talking about that, he appears to get crosses in then NC criticises him for not getting crosses in. Begs the question what constitutes a cross? If he hits it high dropping into the area is that a cross or or lob? Maybe NC only calls it a cross if it hit with power across the box at ground level and up to head hieght.

I watched the game on a sports channel in France. They showed that move several times in the half time highlights, with a mention of Zidane as they did so. Generally the commentators seemed to be very impressed with the standard of football we produced.

Think the official name is the Ndlovu turn. He once did it when clean through on goal, on a hat-trick. He fell over :)

Bizzarely, I am 99% sure that was against Burnley on 12/3/03 when we won 4-2. Brown and Ndlovu got 2 each and we could have got more save for Mr N doing the showboating you mention.

Pah. Pete had WAY better tricks than that.

Yes,I think Maradona was doing it before Zidane..I remember seeing a Uraguayan called Enzo Francescoli do it once.Zidane named his son after Enzo who was his idol at Marseilles,so maybe Zidane got it from there...Bashambaur has claimed it now though.

No offence but stay away please :p

I've watched every game on tv this season up to last night and I know it is different watching live but Basham was seriously excellent last night. Very impressed. I cannot understand why we would sacrifice having him at CB. He can distribute the ball, and bring it forward - something none of our other CB's can do effectively or consistently. I slagged him off at the beginning of the season but for me he would be first name on the teamsheet at the moment. The best positional switch since Ray Kennedy in my opinion.:)
