McCarthy's distribution

Yep, it's not at all obvious to me why we are paying out good wages when Basham and McCevely look so promising.

That said, I was too busy lifting my jaw at Alcock's performance. Just wow. Surely rates as a one or two our of ten, whatever you get awarded for putting your shirt on the right way :)

There must have been an agreement with Alcock's mum involving sexual favours, because he was bloody awful today.

Alcock was awful. Perhaps need to look in bringing a RB. And when is this striker coming in?

He must not be putting the work in at the practice ground. Not that anyone at the club would know what he does in training.

Got to admit Alcock had an absolute mare today. Can't see that being anything but a one off.

Can't understand why people are saying McEveley was worse than McCarthy today, McEveley actually put some decent challenges in today. McCarthy has been absolute shite every time I have seen him.. today being his worst performance yet. I don't think he won a single header against Ibhere today and his passing! I don't know where to start. This isn't just one game i'm talking about either, his distribution is woeful.

All those asking why Bash was changed from CB to CM today, it's clearly because Clough knew this lot were more physical. I imagine Wallace would have started if fit and Bash would have been at the back with McEveley. However as Wallace isn't fit he had to change it around. What pisses me off is that I'd rather see Collins in that position than McCarthy, complete waste of a loan.

Alcock's been poor for ages. I struggled to see why people were getting so excited following a couple of average performances when he arrived. He's steady defensively on a good day and downright shite the rest of the time. He is woeful going forward as well.

Right back would be the first area I would look to recruit in, given the chance. We might as well get a good attacking right back instead of a striker, what with Clough's reluctance to play the forwards we have when they're fit anyway.

I thought McEverley was by far the worse of the centre halves today

Mceverly was turned far too easy by Forte for their goal.

People should be careful what they wish for with Basham and Mceverly and CH - they WILL be found out by good forwards as he was today.

It was NOT offside btw - we were bang in line on the 18 yard box - just clever play by Forte. A CH should not get rolled that easy - you have to be big and strong.

I think McCarthy may be having a bad influence on the team. When he misplaces passes he's too quick to blame the other player, usually Alcock. Doesn't seem to be the sort of player you'd want in the dressing room. McCleverly wasn't his usual calm assured self, a real off day. Scougs put a shift in and looks a bit more like his old self. They were all a bit lacklustre today.

McCarthy - The new Doyle, Baxter, Monty, aye, Tony Wagstaff even... We have to have one don't we.... Sighs wistfully and shakes head.....

McCarthy had a shocker. Basham for me, but he was good in midfield today. I think we can penetrate the opposition better with Basham coming from the back. When you don't have a striker it helps to have someone to move out from the back.

yeah there is a common connection. they were all shite.
i'm still undecided about Baxter

Can't agree with Latters, Alcock for me is one of the first names on the team sheet. Consistently a 6-7/10 week in week out, he puts some cracking challenges in, leaps like a salmon and has a bit of pace about him as well. Clearly good enough for a team looking to get out of this division... today he had a mare but for me one of the more consistent players in the side so far this season.

I can see what you mean in regards to him not being attacking enough (although i do believe he still get's forward enough for a league one side) but I think you are mistaking him for Brayford. A player who is clearly beyond the capabilities of Alcock and should really be playing in the prem. That is what you were used to seeing last season. Realistically Alcock is a very decent right back for this league, anything better then him would be snapped up and playing above (lowton, Brayford, etc). Personally I rate him higher than McMahon so for me he deserves his place, could do with some cover for him though.

For me he's about as bad as McMahon, just without the benefit of being able to score from free-kicks.

I don't think he is good enough for a team looking to get out of this division. Peterborough released him because they didn't think he was good enough. I think he is a steady at best player who best suits a mid-table nonentity. Many more signings like him and that's just what we'll become. We aren't far off it now, in what is truly an awful, awful division.

Nah not at all Latters, Alcock:
+ Quicker than McMahon (by far)
+ Better in the air (by far)
+ Tracks his man and doesn't lose concentration as easily as McMahon
+ Does not dive into challenges recklessly (less of a hot head)
+ Doesn't let the opponent get a cross in as often as McMahon did.

^ Just to name a few off the top of my head!

McMahon:
+ Took a couple of decent free kicks a couple of seasons ago - hasn't scored one since and we have better free kick takers in the team now.....

Yes Peterborough released him (stupidly) they're three points behind us and we have a game in hand, one of their main problems is that they can't keep the score down at the back. I know we aren't best examples of that either but that can very easily be put down to not having a set CB pairing that is the same for more than one week.

McCarthy on the other hand is an example of a bad signing (even if on loan). He adds nothing to the team, just gives the ball away in very poor areas. We have enough CB's who could do a better job. Again , I think you're just used to seeing Brayford who is a good quality RB.

Honestly, we aren't far off a squad of which could easily get out of this league. We need a striker and that's it (maybe a bit of cover for RB), the only other thing that needs changing is some of the decisions from Clough and a bit of luck with injuries. - Key play for me is Wallace, keep him fit and he will boss that midfield and play some really intelligent balls forward. That and start a few games with a settled back four excluding McCarthy, swap the wingers around intelligently and make substitutions appropriately - for example bringing JCR on at the right time. With Higdon, McNulty, and another half decent striker we will have enough.

If they can get in a dominant centre half, preferably one that's good with the mouth, then the rest of the defence falls in around him, although right back is starting to get a bit worrying. Davies is a better option with distribution but when is he going to be fit again is any ones guess. Think it was mentioned on bm last week that Greg Halford might be available, I'd consider that as an improvement on the current players - a defence of Halford-new dominant centre-half-Basham-McEverley would bring them up to speed when attacking and defending set plays.

.

Alcock's top speed isn't great. Over short distances and due to good aggression he seems alright, but in a real sprint against quick wingers he's got no chance.

You can "sigh wistfully" and "shake your head" all you want but I'm just describing what I see. Perhaps when McCarthy gesticulates angrily at his team mates and gives a little angry jig when he's played a shite ball, not an unusual occurrence for him, he's displacing the blame onto his team mates, it's usually Alcock that cops it. I might be wrong perhaps McCarthy is great in the dressing room, I do like a bad loser (Warnock) but isn't McCarthy training with Palace, or have I got that wrong ?

I think Collins may be worth another punt, and what's happened to the young lad at centre back

And by the way I did see Tony Wagstaff play. I know you weren't aiming that barbed comment at me.

No I wasnt aiming it at you as you well know, anyhow I'm guessing youre around my age as you saw TW ( another unfairly maligned lad IMO) and it surprises me that you can form such damning opinions by the odd gesture and withering look. I'm not saying PM is Baresi or Joe Shaw even, but he is good for us at this level and to suggest he may be a bad dressing room influence cos of a few looks and smiles is bit OTT (IMO), but as you say it is your opinion and I reserve the right to shake my head ruefully at opinions :-)
