I remember a few on here (not unreasonably) saying that he was not a great signing given his age. I remember him absolutely terrorising us at Notts County away last year, untouchable (though he was being marked by Matt Hill).

Are we converted now at least to his use as a sub, if not a starter? Admittedly I've only watched the highlights from Satdi, but everything good seemed to come from him. I love the fact we have a very tricky winger at the club. It's a good balance with Murphy or Flynn, who seem to rely on more pace and good directional running to get past someone.

Been excellent almost every time I've seen him this season and would be first choice winger on Saturday for me. Our record when he's actually been on the pitch is also good. If selected at right wing he'll be up against his old teammate Alan Sheehan.

I was indifferent when we signed him but I have to admit that he has looked a threat every time that I have seen him play this season.

His pace and trickery cause a real problem to defenders at this level and they often seem scared to challenge him in case they mis-time and give away a penalty.
From the family stand it looked like he dived to try and win a penalty (or at least made a meal of the challenge) on Saturday but based on what i have heard since it would seem that he was brought down and we should have had a spot kick.

If he can keep up this form and get a run in the side, he should be good for plenty of assists and a few goals too.

So i suppose that makes me converted, although its still early days.

Good post mate, and has to be a definate starter, without a shadow of a doubt.

Not sure I detected too many detractors from the signing of JCR at the time. I, for one, was pleased with his signing for this league. Pace and trickery and one of those players that makes a difference. Wingers are always unpredictable - fitness, opposition, conditions etc. I always liked Cotterill because he had the ability to alter a game - I know he could be anonymous in some games but when he was on song he was a joy to watch and we ticked when he created - Donny benefited from this too when they went up from this league two seasons ago.

With JCR I think you get a more consistent winger than either Murphy or Flynn have shown so far this season, certainly from an attacking perspective, as he takes on his man so much more - and beats him. Flynn is far more disciplined, defensively, and that makes a manager happy - but you do lose something from the attacking threat if they are so defensively pre-occupied. I see NC picking Flynn for the first part of a league match and then use JCR to push on. Might be a good idea to reverse this - get a couple of goals up and then put Flynn on after JCR has run 'em ragged.

I wasn't bothered one way or the other when we signed him. Thought he'd be a decent bench option.

However, we have seemed better with him on the pitch every time I've seen us this season so I'd be starting him at the moment.

A player who has turned out to be better than I thought.

Only question is why has he jumped from club to club so much?

Also makes you wonder why when everyone who's seen him this season has been impressed and yet he can't get a start?

Add McNulty to the above and you have a bit of a conundrum

McNulty has got got better with each game I've seen him. He looks comfortable on the ball, gets stuck in and puts himself about and is beginning to find his feet with a few goals. So why the f'k Clough wont start with an out and out striker at home is baffling?

McNulty for me has earnt the right to start

Mcnulty and JCR would be first names on the team sheet at the moment.

Particularly like the last point about JCR then Flynn if we're winning. That said, we have scored some late goals and JCR running at tired legs might be why.

Incidentally, the overall impression on the original JCR thread was positive, but there were some early detractors:

"My trust in Clough remains...But this is a total facepalm moment!"

"Hope not. And don't see why we would. Not really done much for a few seasons, and we have better options at the club already."

"On paper a shocking signing, the sort of player I would expect Micky Adams to sign. I know the other week I said I would be happy to see more black players in the squad , but I meant ones who are actually any good."

"We need 25 more goals to aim for automatic promotion. He got 2 last season. No objection to this per se, but if we're going to sign midfielders who can't do better than that we really need 2 forwards who can find the net regularly..."

"Very underwhelming. When is the bog roll prince going to actually spend some money. These are McCabe era signings..."

Dont think he could do it at Championship level but at league 1 level hes a fullbacks nightmare!

I don't think I've ever been as wrong about a player. I thought it was a shocking signing- hey what do I know!?

Ha - already got 2 this season - so big raspberries to whoever stated that.

At Wet Sham - JCR looked pretty dangerous all game and gave them something to think about so to say he couldn't cut it at Championship level is wrong - his consistency may drop slightly due to the calibre of the opposition - but he quite definitely has the skills and may see the Blades has his primary chance of a career Indian Summer.

I like the guy :)

Pity some of our quick off the mark no everything football fans , who give very player a chance to bed in and settle
Flynn 2 seasons ago , smurfs last season , JCR , Mcnulty , before a ball was kicked in anger , this season
thank fuck we got them for nowt , otherwise there would be carnage with the millions we spent on them bench warmers .
;)

I think he's only become a threat more recently (improved fitness/confidence perhaps?), early doors, he never even attempted to take on a man and looked to have lost a yard or so.

At the moment, both him and McNulty would get a place in the 11 on merit though.

He's varying his crosses a lot more now - against Orient he was standing them up, cut them back etc. A few weeks ago (I forget against whom) he drilled every one low into the front post.

OG has not scored for us lately maybe that is why he was sending them in low. :)

Campbell-Ryce would be the first name on the team sheet every week it's just that Nige is a bit uncertain about the use of hyphens.

Good observations about him early doors, absolutely spot on.

Agreed. I remember initially thinking that he was not as quick as i expected and he seemed to be carrying a little more weight then when i had seen him in the past. Just prior to his injury and again at the weekend he looked to have improved in both respects and he is a real threat for us at the moment.

The final ball needs some work though.
