Article doesn't even mention us, but then I saw he's just retweeted something about our U21 game tonight. Is he on trial?

He's just put the U21's 2-1 up at Brum.

I think this is just the sort of player we should be taking a gamble on, he won't cost anything and there have been some fantastic players who played the early part of their career in non league. There are plenty of players who slip through the academy system and others who just develop later, sensible option and well done Utd for getting in early and giving him a chance. :)

I remember people saying a few years ago that we should have taken a look at Jamie Vardy, when he played for Stocksbridge Park Steels, maybe this lad is the next Jamie Vardy? Who knows, but worth a punt.

Vardy is a player I bet Wednesday wish they never let go.

Seems like an instinctive striker.

He's playing in The Northern League, to put it into a local context, that's the level below Stocksbridge and Sheffield, about on par with Staveley MW and Worksop Town, a whole 6 divisions below League Two.

Now, Clough and his staff will be the judge of him but it's one hell of a step up from there!

True but he just scored for us this evening.

He seems to know where the net is and no harm taking a look at him.

Vardy was at Stocksbridge for 7 years before getting a move elsewhere and even then it was to Halifax Town.

Now I've not seen this lad play, but having watched Whitley Bay and North Shields in the same league I can tell you the teams in that league play a good standard of football and if he's a natural goalscorer.... worth a punt for sure in L1!

To me this is the sort of lad we should be taking a serious look at while we are in this position, in this division.
He could well be the next Vardy and it would be a real shame to miss out on someone like this if they feel he is good enough

Ross Hannah used to score goals for fun at Matlock Town which is a much higher level (I think) he signed for Bradford and it was a step to high for him.

On the other hand like many of the comments above Jamie Vardy/ Ian Wright went on to successful careers from starting at Non League football, he is definitely worth a trial, he wouldn't be a big gamble either I doubt he will demand a big wage should we sign him. We have to trust Clough and co's judgement on him.

He's about the age a young man called Ian Wright went to Palace after spells in non-league.

Sometimes it's just about someone showing faith in a player. That can be the difference for some players, just knowing that you have the backing of the people who run the club. Clough is doing this with McGahey. NC has taken a guesstimate about this young man's potential, and so far there seems to be more positives than negatives, with far more to come.

Assuming Clough saw something worth investing in, then Fenwick's signing would be an easy decision to make.

Look at Marcus Maddison who signed for Peterborough from Gateshead in August 2014 (OK Gateshead and the Conference aren't exactly non-league these days), he seems to be doing OK in L1 although I think he's only scored once so far, but he's only 21!

At the level we are, there's potential gems out there, players who have developed later having been at bigger clubs in their youth.

How many players have we let go only for them to develop their career elsewhere?

Not strictly true. A lot of Northern League clubs stay there simply because of the costs of travelling should they move into the Evostik, or whatever it is called this season. It is a much higher standard that Northern Counties East, which is where Stavely MW play.

Worksop Town play at a higher level than both Stocksbridge & Sheffield.

I agree NJ.
If you get chance to look at any highlights of North Shields games online from this season, you'll see they play a fast paced passing game which is a pleasure to watch!

And there's the more recent example of Dwight Gayle - Essex Senior League Stansted to Premier League Palace in 3 years

Until he dropped him for fuck all reason for a big game for a player who signed the day before ;)

Not accurate Olly ;) NC explained why he dropped McGahey, so although it may have been a 'fuck all' reason for yourself, NC did provide one. Whether you, I, or any other Blade accepted this is another matter.

Fair enough, I didn't catch his explanation :)

That's ok, think it was something along the lines of NC had already considered McGahey ready for a rest. Can't say I agree but Nige will know more than me about who's tired or ready for a rest.
Understand what you're saying iiyb, but Collins who's 31 and McGahey who's 19o_OI wonder who could possibly need the rest more:rolleyes:Although i would have started them both myself. No one should be a shoe in,no matter what the conditions of a loan is,that's crackers.

Not about the rest. Youngsters are prone to peaks and troughs in form. We saw it with Maguire. If Clough can see that coming, it's good sense to get them out of the firing line.
