I'm absolutely delighted for them today.

So far this season, it's been a little bit of a disappointment in terms of the league form and the performances. Don't get me wrong, I'm not set to slash my wrists over it - in my opinion, we've beaten the teams we should have expected to beat (Crawley and Rochdale at home, Colchester away), got some good, maybe unexpected, results at Preston and Peterborough and had a couple of setbacks that were disappointing but not completely unexpected at Swindon and Coventry and home to Bristol City. However, with a lot of negativity beginning to cloud things from certain quarters, today was a day when I felt the players needed what they got in the end.

First off, the performance, particularly second half, was excellent. If that is James Wallace lacking match fitness, I'm looking forward to seeing him when he is fully fit. He ran things for half an hour second half and how we didn't score in that period of the game, I will never ever know. First half, we started well and should have gone in front early but then, whilst we had control, it was no more than decent. I'd suggest that our second half performance - even before the late goals - was our best of the season by a way and suggests that if we get the striker we crave, we've got something here.

Problem was, had we not scored, the negativity would have continued despite a cracking performance. I was saddened to see people getting up and leaving when Gillingham scored - it was a cruel, cruel blow that needed the supporters to rally as the majority did. For all those that got up and left at that point, I'm glad you missed the final moments. The players did not deserve to lose or draw and did not deserve to be walked out on for what was, essentially, a wonder strike out of nothing. For those that stayed, we saw the players keep going and get what they fully deserved, a great win. Sure, it's only Gillingham but the manner of the victory means it should fill the players with confidence now moving forwards. If we play like that for the rest of the season at Bramall Lane, I'm confident that we will win every game because we should have been out of sight. The second half looked, to me, like a side playing like promotion contenders. And, when hit with the sucker punch, the players showed the character of promotion contenders to hit back.

Sure, some will bemoan the strikers not putting away the countless chances - seven good chances by my count. Some will bemoan the over-playing at times - though I'd put that down to the defensive display of the opposition more than United getting it wrong. We put many dangerous crosses in but every time, apart from Higdon's goal, Gillingham's defenders got their positioning spot on and dealt with it. You have to give them credit even if you don't like the manner of their performance - they came for a point and almost robbed us of three.

I'm delighted for the players because now the positive performance is reflected in the positive result as well. There should be no negativity tonight - not even about strikers - because Higdon showed that he could be a potential answer for us. I hope the players enjoy a couple of pints tonight at the party because they fully deserve them.

Up the Blades.

I don't think its down to the strikers and Higdon and McNulty will evolve into stars this season. Today was purely down to bad luck ,from all parts of the pitch.

I agree Sitwell, post twice, cleared off the line how many times, 4 I think, 27 shots, 7 on target to their 4 shots 1 on target, really does say it all.
As for OP, looked to me like a team starting to understand each other, dare I use the cliche gelling?
I've said a few times, given a little luck some team is going to get smashed, possibly worse than in a recent league cup game, I forget the combatants but the score was 7-0.
The players gave a fantastic account of themselves and should be proud, as I am.
Long may it continue.

In the same fixture last season although we dominated the play we lost 2-1 and they only had three shot, mind you we only had ten corners that game ..

Wallace looks like a great prospect. The best ball playing midfielder since McDonald perhaps.

The exciting thing about him is his willingness to play the difficult killer ball. Plenty were misplaced as he tired a bit, but he might have had three assists today.

That's what happens when you play well Blades, the crowd were fantastic.

Interesting to see we have so far we have played 5 of the top 6 teams, 3 teams from mid table and only one who are currently near the bottom four.

That's kinda what I was trying to point out in the opening paragraph of the OP.

I try and look at who we're playing and consider what we expected from them realistically - frankly, we've had a tough start.

Expected wins: Crawley (h), Rochdale (h), Colchester (a) and Gillingham (h)
4 wins out of 4, can't argue with that.

Expected draws: Bristol City (h), Swindon (a), Coventry (a)
Disappointments in all these games but these are teams we're going to be in and around this season.

Expected defeats: Peterborough (a), Preston (a)
4 points here though makes up for the disappointments against Brizzle and Swindon.

I winced when I saw the opening months of the season as I thought it looked tough and so it proved. The MK Dons game was postponed too and that probably goes in the expected draw section when we get round to it. So, after 10 games, I expected us to have 16 points. In reality, we have 16 from 9 games with MK Dons to come.

For me, there's two clear points there. On a positive note, we're beating the teams we should be beating. Yes, it would be nice to have taken more points in the tougher games (particularly at home) but we are beating the teams that should end up below us. On the negative side, it looks like the close games (where we should realistically get a draw) are proving problematic with three defeats. We've remedied it so far by taking unexpected points at Posh and PNE but we've got to start getting more from those types of games.

Next up, we have Chesterfield (a), Orient (h) and Bradford (a) - three more tough games. If you're completely honest, how many wins would you expect from that? Start of the season, we'd have gone for a win at Chesterfield and tough games with Orient and Bradford. It's probably altered a little now - a win at home to Orient and draws at Chesterfield and Bradford would be "expected" now I'd suggest. Personally, I think United might get 4 points over the next three after Bradford, the run simplifies a little. Up to Christmas, I'd class the majority as being games I expect United to win.

Expected wins: Yeovil (h), Crewe (a), Barnsley (h), Oldham (h), Notts County (h), Walsall (h), Scunthorpe (h)

Expected draws: Doncaster (a), Fleetwood (a), Port Vale (a)

Expected defeats: None.

I know that football doesn't work like this - on paper is different to on grass. However, once the next three are out of the way, I expect United to kick on and hit a run towards the end of December. As 2014 turns to 2015, I think United should have 40+ points (I'd go for 44) with a game in hand. I'd be surprised if that didn't put us in the top two. We've had a tough start, we've got another couple of tough weeks and then we've got a decent run of fixtures (IMO).
