It’s potentially a massive missed opportunity but it’s gone now, they’ll only work with one club in each division.

Believe they were working with Ipswich previously which is why the opportunity opened up as they went up.

Maybe if we get relegated

Any relationship to James Bord Analytics?

Grimsby town have also been using them since 2023, they also saw the massive opportunity.

If Tony Blooms analytics model spots a potential star, is he going to recommend them to Swansea, Grimsby or Ipswich, or sign them for his own clubs?

Sorry but your arguments to defend Wilder and be anti AI are just getting more and more strange and desperate. Deliberately obtuse posts about Bord and Jamestown.

Yes, everyone acknowledges that both Selles and Bord were absolute clusterfucks.

Jamestown have got a proven track record of being extreamly effective where as our recent recruitment has been nothing short of absolutely tragic.

The reasons why they only deal with one club in each division is clearly to avoid conflicts of interest. They’ll have policies and procedures that each of their involved clubs accept and sign up to before they begin.

Grimsby and Swansea will be fishing in a totally different pool financially to Brighton. Part of the identification process will be the financial element and which of their clubs can afford the target.

If we don’t join the modern era at some point and keep signing aged dross we’ll end up relegated, back to where we started this whole journey, watching shite football in league one a decade behind everyone else while the likes of Swansea battle for promotion and sign exciting young players. Sounds wonderful, let’s just carry on as we are because people are shit scared of change

I don't think Swansea will stay at the very top of the league but they are looking a good bet for top 8.

It is a missed opportunity for us though. Whether we were ever in the equation is another matter. Given the cluster of this summer I think this was probably low on the list of priorities...

But I'm sure there are others around given the number of clubs utilizing good analytics and scouting.
It's something whether you are pro or anti Wilder that can't be denied. We have to get better systems for this to unearth gems that don't cost the earth.

They don’t have to go up this season do they, or next…

It could be a 3-5 year project for them, which without Jamestown or unearthing a miracle working manager they probably wouldn’t have been anywhere near promotion in that time period.

They’ll also probably sign and sell a few players for a healthy profit during that time period meaning their accounts are in better order and they’re more prepared for a step up.

I don’t think many people actually expect them to last the distance this year but the transformation already is impressive.

It took the likes of Brentford a few years to actually crack it but when they did they were in a good position to stay up.

The old theory for me sees them higher than top 8 and will be very unlucky not to be promoted autos. We always look at first 10 games played to roughly judge a season, with them 10 played, 23 points. Won 7, Drawn 2 (our result down there looks good), lost 1. At the moment easily on a +90 total if they keep going as they are. Their loss came against Southampton away so not exactly an easy fixture, a big one up for them next as they have West Ham, if they win that, their next tough fixture isn't until the end of November against 'boro.

Exactly

So Grimsby Towns use of AI analytics and Watfords use of managerial change should be disregarded because it doesn't fit the narrative of some?

Only thinking of the Brighton and Manchester City models is equally blinkered in my book, firstly for those models you need owners with thousands of millions of spare change.

Optimist - pessimist - realist.

For me it only highlights our strategy to recruitment as culturally institutionalised and something that will drag us down further and further behind and down.

The people who are shit scared of change are also strangely the same ones that state there isn't a single manager out there that could do a better job as our manager with the squad we have available.

It's almost like there's some sort of correlation 🤔

I’m a realist.

Nothing in the world guarantees success. There are examples of using AI and analytics for recruitment, a head coach and director of football model being total failures and examples where it is a success.

I’m also aware that the vast majority of successful football clubs are investing heavily into a more modern approach and if we blindly refuse to do so then we will get left behind. We already are.

Our incompetent owners said they were shocked at just how much involvement wilder has in the day to day running of the club. That isn’t sustainable. What is he got hit by a bus tomorrow while we have such a key man dependency?

Which clubs in the top divisions are currently successful while having one person seemingly propping up the whole operation?

Peoples posts tend to extremise based on their opinion and then get met with equally extreme and opposite opinions.

I don’t follow Grimsby closely at all but I assume that they are playing the long game and are so far happy with the arrangement or they would change things. They probably do not have the financial clout for instant success. They may have a target of championship in 10 years for all we know.

As for Watford I think they are probably one of the most insane and ridiculously run football clubs on the planet. They would probably sack Pep 6 months in if he hadn’t won them the champions league so I pay little attention to who they are hiring and firing. The whole structure of DOF - Head Coach - Analytics and scouting can only work if the whole club is on-board. The owners need to appoint people who they trust and allow them to do their jobs. Resistance at any level will totally destroy the process and lead to issues. The Watford owners come across as meddlesome, control freaks who demand instant success and a will not allow people time and trust to do their jobs.

Jamestown don't licence their data to clubs that they see as being in direct competition with each other, i.e. in the same division. Basically to avoid conflicts of interest like this, and why Swansea are using it now, as Ipswich stopped when they got promoted. Typically a player that would be on the radar for Brighton now wouldn't also be of interest for Swansea and vice versa. Of course, a player that signs for Swansea might well be someone that Brighton are well aware of, but if it turns out that the player does progress to someone that Brighton then go "buy him", Swansea will probably have done quite well out of it in terms of on pitch performance and outgoings transfer fee (plus, quite likely given Brighton's transfer track record, a sell on percentage) and likely won't be complaining. It's not as if Brighton are going the Chelsea route and hoarding all sorts and loaning out dozens

Who are the guys who own Notts County and run their own analytical company. Might they help ?

The problem(s) with United’s recruitment model is that even when we choose a narrow strategy, we don’t even do it well.

So, immediately we dismiss most of the global markets we say we will sign players from:

  • England
  • Scotland
  • Scandinavia (apparently)

So we should be all over that market quickly, right?

No, we also want to wait until late in the window to secure the best supposed bargain despite the obvious scenario where the pool of those players will be ever decreasing the longer you wait.

We want to have our cake and eat it:

We will miss out on potentially cheaper foreign talent but offset that by not paying the cost of an extended network.

Fishing in a limited pool, rather than be first out of the blocks snapping up frees left right and centre but paying decent snout wages to snag them, we also want to get them cheap.

So that’s why we end up with:

Doherty; who nobody else was in for and is mid thirties and seemingly never available.

Ayew; who must have been considering hanging up his boots. I get the circumstances but we needed a LW back up even before Gus left and we needed a no 10 back up when he did and before Callum left.

Choudhury; a player a team in the division below were happy to offload.

We create narrow parameters, narrow them further and then shrug our shoulders and say “what else could we do?” when we don’t succeed.

Yeah but what do the AI blokes know eh?

Though they also appointed a new head of recruitment, a new sporting director from Crystal Palace and a new head of goalkeeping and analysis.

So to say that their current success is purely down to the use of AI is not necessarily accurate.

I used AI to choose my lottery numbers last week, suffice it to say I'm not in a position to buy our club yet.

So you're admitting that having a proper structure in place as well as decent analytics is the way forward then?

We don't like these things because we tried it once and it failed, similar to why we should never employ a foreign manager again, plus it would effectively be the end of the CW comfort blanket.

Who says we don't currently use AI analytics?

As we are still paying for the James Bord AI 'errors' we probably couldn't afford Jamestown Analytics anyway.

We don't have a transfer strategy other than one aimed for a short term fix of "let's see what will get us through this season and we'll worry about next season in the summer." The following summer it's the same short sighted plan. We have no long term transfer strategy in place. It looked like we were headed in the right direction when we signed Burrows and Cooper and then we abandoned that plan.

There's no point working with data analysts when Wilder re-signs Riedewald, Phillips, BBD, Choudhury and gives a new contract to Rothwell and Campbell. He won't listen as he's an egotistical control freak.

Everytime I see Jamestown on this thread I think of Ozzy Osbourne "wer ther really cannibals in Jamestown?...fackin ell" 🤣

Wilder said in Lincoln presser we use a data company.

With Jamestown only doing one club per division there's a right market there for anyone who might be able to replicate what they do.

Speaking for myself, my thoughts are it's not that there isn't a single manager out there who could do a better job as our manager with this squad. There are. Dozens of them. But how many of them would come to lil' ole, mid to lower table, Championship Sheffield United to do that better job? Very few, if any I would guess. We're just stuck with the likes of Wilder, Hecky, Parkinson etc and we will be until we get rid of Bettis and his ilk.
