Is it me or does it feel like, despite the window having closed, there’s a helluva lot of things need work?

1. Player contracts - 2028 expiry
Remember it is supposed club policy not to let players enter the last 12 months of their deal; so that brings into question those with contracts running until 2028, these players either need tying down or putting up for sale as early as January sk their value doesn’t drop:
  • Cooper
  • Tanganga
  • Seriki (assume we trigger to 2028)
  • Burrows
  • McCallum
  • Peck
  • Arblaster
  • Campbell

2. Player contracts 2027 expiry
I’m thinking a number of these we are perhaps happy to let run and some are older players who won’t demand a long deal. Nonetheless, there are a lot of them (might not be a bad thing):
  • Davies
  • Baptiste
  • Doherty
  • Shackleton
  • Norrington-Davies
  • Riedewald
  • Choudhury
  • Rothwell
  • Ayew
  • Bamford

Of the above I can’t see too many that will be retained; maybe Bamford has a spell to convince us to extend by a year, maybe Baptiste gets chances to establish himself. Maybe depending on finances and other players Rhys ends up extending. Otherwise I don’t see the others offering bang for their buck.

3. January Transfer Window Planning
For all the not being backed, unlike David Moyes who we recently quoted, he chose to not add volume to his squad and has a senior squad of 21; we on the other hang have 26 of which only Oné is classed as a young’un therefore we leave ourselves no wiggle room for January as things stand. So rather than bemoaning our luck for something of our own creation, we need to be on the front foot as to who will be moved on.

4. Style and Formation
Much spoke about. While the 4-4-2 has some positive results, for anyone with eyes it’s clear this has been despite the formation and not because of. We seemed wedded to 4-2-3-1 until we realised we had just one no 10 and he’s now playing in Wales. So for me there are two options:
We remain 3 at the back, and sticking Arblaster in no man’s land isn’t working as a tactic, so we improve the front set up by going 3-5-2 and work out how to not have a chasm between midfield and attack or we give Donovan a few role as a 10 behind chosen striker.
- We go 4-3-3; the advantage of this is that ou have an extra forward player. In simple terms you want your better players on the pitch, so the ask is this, who’s continuous contribution is most likely to get is more points? Brereton-Diaz/Chong/Oné or Baptiste/McCallum? For this reason I’d like to see Phillips as the 6 flanked by Peck and Arblaster as 8s and not some weird inside forward right wing false ten nonsense that saw Arblaster lost against Stoke.

We also need to do a severe amount of work on patterns of play within the chosen formation.

That’s a start. Without opening it up to sack the old manager, hire a new one (we have plenty of those threads), anything else you see as pressing (aside from get more wins!)

The contracts one is huge for next summer and something I’ve mentioned a few times these past couple of months, particularly those expiring in 2028.

We’ve seen this summer, under a likely better set of circumstances than next that we can’t hold on to top talent with just one year left, so how will we managed that come July?

That’s a good read with plenty of salient points.

Personally I’ve arrived at the point where I’ve had all the “gives a shit” beaten out of me, especially the Wilder in / out stuff.

But kudos to you for this post

We have to be smart and ruthless with contracts and selling players who don't have long left

And ideally the proceeds wouldn't simply be covering the horrendous amounts wasted on slow, ageing dross

We're going to have to start spending fees on younger players very soon. Wilder alluded to this but I won't be holding my breath

lack of leaders on the pitch - yes we have a huddle after that few arms waved thats as good as it gets

Nice to see a constructive post.

Can't disagree with any of that really. When January comes around we will need to see where we are in the table. Because if we are in the relegation fight. And I do mean fight not just looking like we are down. Then to lose more quality from the squad in sales is not a good strategy for me.

But the long term planning needs to shift too. We have had a bad transfer window, which on the looks of it is entirely been driven by reducing costs and a debt.
It's meant that bringing in fresh faces has been low down the priority list.

It will be interesting to see if we can look a more capable squad when we have the likes of Burrows, One, Seriki and McCallum back in fold for selection.
It should give us more options overall. And I don't think it can be underestimated how much we've missed Seriki and recently McCallum as fullback/wing back options. Choudhury and RND are not particularly attacking fullbacks. Burrows is very much of an attacking fullback/wing back with a good cross and pass in him. Been mentioned before but playing him LM could be a good option too.

One should give us another dimension up top. In his brief cameo vs Brum he should how even on just a physical side of things defences are going to be worried about him. He's pretty tall, very strong and not slow. It may make defences feel the need to double up at times on him which may make spaces for us.

I had been pinning all my hopes on Seriki coming back and magically making everything look better but you are right, on saturday we were missing all our players who could be considered wing backs.

Not sure how much we have seen Burrows and Seriki with a back 3 but that would massively help us to get bodies up the pitch.

That entire lot expiring in '27 can do one.
If any of them are here beyond expiry that's me done.
I'll get back to you on the '28s.

I'd say that depending on what happens this season I wouldn't be averse to offering Baptiste a new deal.
And Bamford if he can rekindle his form. Wilder's mentioned he is carrying a bit of an issue this season.

I wonder if the non-parachute clubs in the Championship are moving to an era in which transfer fees are unaffordable at current levels and so we end up with a bidding war on wages each summer.
Gets more like the short-term picking of teams in the school playground.
You rent a player for one or two seasons , loyalty is gone and the managerial skill is in knitting a side together on the hoof , permanently on the lookout for who you might grab to rectify your current deficiencies.
In which case , Wilder is history coz he only recruits old duds.
You get a wised-up DoF who does nothing other than recruit.
And a head coach who sets up the team & makes in-game changes.
And a medical & fitness expert who prevents the recruitment of non-athletes by doing proper medicals.

I'd say that depending on what happens this season I wouldn't be averse to offering Baptiste a new deal.
And Bamford if he can rekindle his form. Wilder's mentioned he is carrying a bit of an issue this season.
Maybe so , depends if they get picked and perform this season

We don't have one quality player at the club now so all of them can go. 3 miserable seasons and counting sooner the change the better

433 as you mention, seems to be staring us all in the face but wilder seemingly blind to it.

Id had hamza as the dm... he has the athleticism to cover and gokd enough to anchor. Allowing seriki and burrows to bomb forward and overload each side playing similar to wingback.. but wed always have 3 back.

Phillips and peck as box to box progress the ball either carrying or intricate passing.

This also gives us options out wide of bbd, one, Donovan, campbell& Chong (or swap wings if needs be).

---------------------cooper
Seriki Tanganga kitching Burrows
------------------choudhury
----------Peck-----------------Phillips
Donovan-----Bamford-------------One

Bamford number 9 with pacey wingers getting in behind allowing for the full backs to overlap into space behind them.

Also to touch up in contracts talks, id be looking to tie down cooper for another 3 years, along with peck, seriki & burrows.. possible extending Arblaster in hopes to unlock his potential, offer 2 years to baptise and mcallum.

Look to activily sell Tanganga and the rest.

A thing that needs fixing is for any of our strikers to challenge for the ball in the air. I dont care if you're jimmy fckin krankie, or even smaller like jamie shackleton (🤣) fckin jump and challenge for the ball. Campbell, cannon, bamford...all masters at just backing in and looking at the defender head the ball away.

I think the biggest we need to change is the actual structure of the club.

There’s an acknowledgement the manager is too involved in too many things. No matter who the manager is in 2026 a Championship level club has to devolve that power into different parts of the club.

Let the scouting dept identify targets with the help of modern analytics, get a technical director or whatever we want to call it to make sure we don’t have all these players running out of contract and to negotiate incomings and outgoings. Let the head coach/manager actually spend time coaching the team so we have patterns and styles of play.

I absolutely agree with all your points, they do all need fixing, but in a club our size in 2026 the structure needs completely overhauling to be able to address them long term.

no i hear you, think im talking about someone who can grab the game by the b**s and players look up to respect - a Declan Rice type player albeit on a lower level someone who takes responsibility
Only player who has that in spades is Sydie but he is 21 and needs 1/2 older ones with him.

Rice had the likes of Noble to look up to.

Who the f**k is Sydie looking up to in this team.
