I'll only be quick today - as emotions don't go well when trying to be objective!

Graph 1 shows that we are actually still just one point behind my benchmark results to get 70 points and 8th place - so still plenty to hope for.

So why do things feel bad?

To get into the playoffs, as a rough historical generality, you need to score about 70 and have a positive goal difference. Graph 2 shows our goals for and against and our xg goals for and against. So objectively our xg against is a bit high - but we are beating it - so we are defensively about in line for bottom playoffs. However, our xg is about 50% below what is required for playoffs - and we are just about matching that xg with actual goals. So taking the simplest conclusion from that -

our defensive performance is OK and our finishing is OK, but we are not creating, or attempting sufficeient chances. No shit Sherlock -

-
but at at least the stats back up our emotion-based opinions!! Incidentally, we are bottom 3 in league tables based on overall performance in matches.

My general opinions on current Wilder, for what it's worth - in 2016 we lost 3 of our first 4 - in Game 3, we were 3-0 down at home against Southend - he brought Coutts on in a quarterback type role - and we looked much better. He then stuck with something that worked and we got 100 points. In 2026 he plays Donovan inverted on the right and he looks good, but consistently comes inside and loses possession. He gets 10 minutes in a traditional role on the left against Bolton and exploits the outside space to score the winner. Wilder ignores the improvement and subsequently persists in using Donovan in an inverted role (if at all)!

Wilder 2016 was driven by outcomes - Wilder 2026 is driven by trying to convince everybody, particularly himself, that he always knows better -

- when you stop learning you only go backwards.

Makes no sense.

We're 17th with 9 points from 8 games.

That'll get you nowhere near 70 points over the full season.

If you follow this work you will know that GraphMan creates a set of benchmark results before the season starts, based on each week’s individual opponents and the location to achieve certain season-end totals. Those do not change. We are 1 point behind what those pre-seaso benchmarks of our actual matches so far required to achieve 70 points, and a statistical 8th place. If you look at previous years you will know that this is a far more effective way of monitoring realistic relative positions than simplistic straight-lines.

The point about our bottom 3 position in all the xgtables is more relevant, however, as our measurable performances are actually worse than our current results and league position suggests.

It's bollocks.

We're 17th with 9 points from 8 games.

Any model that predicts that team to even finish in the top half, never mind the top eight is bending over backwards to clutch at straws.

Only 69 at the moment! Could be a worse number! - and it’s not a prediction it’s a path to a target.

What's the target, the play offs?

The club is in turmoil, half the fans want the manager out and we're staring a relegation battle in the face.

Book your hotels for Wembley lads.

I reckon you need to flip this round mate and look at the path to avoid relegation. That's where we're heading, playoffs is complete nonsense.

Win the next two and we are in line for 69 points. Win the next three and proportionally we will be in the play offs.
I think we need to assess our situation after the next three games.

Well yeah but this is what people kept saying at the back end of last season even though we were constantly about ten points off 6th.

We ended up nowhere near.

You cannot just look at the points per game we have had so far, say we will win the next two (against two of the weakest teams in the division) and say that will be sustainable for the whole season. We have had one of the softest starts in terms of opposition in the whole division as of right now. After we have played a promoted team with almost certainly the lowest budget in the league and then a recently promoted team who ended 18th last year, it will be even softer. It is the exact opposite of looking at Fulham being second from bottom, assuming they're fucked, and then not looking at who they have played in their first five or that they then play the three promoted teams in their next three games.

Of course not. The point I am making is that you can produce whatever numbers and outcomes you wish without them reflecting what happens.
Just look at the figures around Ched Evans’ arrest and the following weeks.
