Pleased for him.

Didn't rate him at all for some time but he grew on me and worked hard with some great hold up play.

Feel the Scots have missed a trick a bit not including him in the world cup.

Couldn't have done much worse up top for them

That was exactly why I didn't want us to sign him. We would have used him as a big target man a là Kieffer Moore, which hasn't ever been how he plays football.

I like that he's doing so well for himself, even if it isn't for us.
If he had come back last summer, I actually doubt that Selles would have used him as a target man. Sadly though, Selles didn't want to use him at all.

There were two issues during his time with us, that stopped us getting the best out of McBurnie.
The first is his availability and consistency. He was always injured/lacking fitness, out with illness (covid), or getting himself involved in nonsense off the pitch that acted as an unwelcome distraction. Unfortunately, we lost him just as he'd settled down with a mrs and a kid, and appeared to start taking his career more seriously.
The second is that, as you say, we didn't deploy him properly. We used him as a target man when he was always better with the ball in to feet and being more of a link up man. He should have been played more like McGoldrick than Kieffer Moore. Big missed opportunity for us.

Moore & McBurnie would've give us a lot of different options last season. Alas, we had a terrible window and the one just gone looks similarly bad but at least understandable somewhat (given finances).

From what I can gather he was a single guy when he joined us, living life to the full when he was getting into scrapes off the field and suffering injuries on it.

Now hes a bit more family focused with a partner and young kids plus probably a realisation that a footballers career is very short term so you need to make the most of it.

Would have had him back (on a free) in a heartbeat. What value now for a top 4 PL striker who got the goal that secured promotion and took the club up (they stayed up in the Champ only on goal difference the previous year)

I disagree
Apologies just to elaborate on my point.

We saw glimpses, but I never thought he was the player he was before he came, at least consistently, and he’s showing it now too, in my opinion

I don’t think he was the finished product when we signed him. We developed him for our benefit, he worked harder and probably sacrificed himself for the team at times

He was a little lazy when he came in, shuffled along, had some petulance and issues off the pitch which impacted him on it too.

The player now is very different to the player that left us. We used him well when he was fit

I felt we tried to use him too much as a target man, despite him being a big lad he was better running onto the ball
As I said, we used his strengths to teams benefit.

Did we use all of his strengths? Probably not, but also we had him develop at the club as well
