Reasons to be positive:
1. Compared to this point last season:
2. Sheff Utd are a club that thrives with its back to the wall.
3. Romelle Donovan looks great
4. Kalvin Phillips looks great
5. Obviously attacking threat is seriously diminished but:
Out of the box sources of creativity;
a. Harrison Burrows - I think that Kitching will make us more solid on the left side of defence which may allow us to bring Burrows back in as a starter. We need his set pieces, and his delivery from the left. Can probably be played as LM in a pinch, or if we play 3 at the back contributing from LWB.
b. Arblaster - we didn't see much of him last season, could be deplyed as a 10, or as a more attack focused 8 alongside 2 other CMs
c. Seriki - Apparently back sooner than we thought, as a RWB or even as a deputy winger we can lean more into his attacking quality .
d. Rothwell - Can play further forward and pick passes around the box
e. Chong - Will play more, can play as a 10, and thats probably his strongest position. Didn't get a look in last season, but we may get lucky and see the best from him.
6. Formations to accomodate our lack of attacking depth
a. 352 with a flat midfield. We played this in the PL season we finished 9th. Leans into our depth at CM. Phillip/Jairo at the base. 2 of Rothwell/Arblaster/Peck as 8. Or we could play Donovan as a roaming 10. Maximizes the attacking contributions from Seriki and Burrows.
b. 433 - Flat midfield. As above with the midfielders. BBD/One/Campbell on the left, Donvan/Chong on the right. Strong midfield allows us to deploy our attacking fullbacks (Seriki/Burrows)
7. Unbeaten in 6 - Maybe fortunately so, but think this squad has a good mentality.
We know the owners want out. But we can support Wilder, the players and the club in squeezing the maximum out of the group. They are a likeable bunch, with plenty of leadership and grit. Need to be more foregiving as its not going to be a banner year for exciting football, but winning against the odds is when this club is at its best.
