Still love it when Carl Asaba is on and the hosts always calls him by his full name every single time

"So Carl Asaba, What do you think about that performance Carl Asaba?..." "Thank you Carl Asaba, that was Carl Asaba there giving his thoughts and you can join Carl Asaba later when the phone lines open"

Don't know why it grates on me, but it just makes me laugh now.

He can send me to sleep sometimes with his commentary,. The bbc & sky have some shocking presenters commentators and pundits, at least it's not Stef-fan Pow -well!

Andy Giddings as a commentator should be in the 'what winds you up thread'.
He NEVER stops talking for a second. And more often than not it's irrelevant to what's happening on the pitch. He'll go and on about how many matches this player played for his last club. How tall this player is. How many touches so and so had in his last match. Where some player went on holiday. Ad infinitum. All this while play is going on. Boils my piss.

Exactly this. He's either waffling on about something which isn't relevant, or he describes what's happening on the pitch at 100mph in minute detail. There's no inbetween.

Also glad I don't have to hear him talk about Alfie Gilchrist's shaved head or Ben Mee's fair hair anymore...

Good chance this year that local radio sports coverage is going to be cut back as BBC are looking to reduce costs. A proposal is that all local commentaries will be done only by the home club/local radio station. I.e if we’re away at Derby , we’d get BBC Radio Derby coverage only. This would probably see 1 or 2 local presenters also losing their jobs.

Would be a shame - but this is a proposal already under consideration this autumn.

This seems to be the BBCs answer to everything, cut local radio at some level or other and it's a shame.
If the BBC needs to cut costs, maybe lose say, Radio 3.
I imagine the 14 people that listen to it would find something else and they can the money into local radio like it should do.

No one on here will be sad ....All anyone does on here is slag it off from top to bottom

My comment on this, just over 15 years ago we had a chatroom that was initially done by Paddy'smad, feeding the RS common via microphone into the chatroom, you could hear Paddy's dog barking in the background especially when blades scored, knowsnowt did it it for a bit and a couple of others, one who had buses passing his house, kept apologising as when the bus passed It cut out his radio signaL, did happen in one match and blades scored.
It kept our blades fans in far flung away places in touch with what was happening. I was asked to do it and did it happily feeding the sound of my radio into my pc, I loved doing it, chatroom banter was great.
I think the best attended room audience was over a hundred for bouncing day, we also had a few fans of the opposition who logged in and enjoyed it, there was generally no abusive language between people, just the bollocks, Barsteward and get ferked if united conceded.
If united scored though....get the ferk in..etc
It was a real lifeline for those who were abroad, some who were serving, others just ex pats.
My fear is that local footy commo will be stopped altogether for local radio stations, with government cutbacks in so called public spending especially with the beeb.

Woooof Woooof

Makes me laugh when I watch back our highlights with Giddings commentating, as the pattern of play is nowhere near what's described in his commentary. Often they'll be a goal or major chance whilst he's mid ramble

Avoid watching the SUTV coverage because of the RS commentary. Try and watch our opponents coverage instead on IPTV or something.

Its a nightmare listening to the matches on the radio these days. Andy or whoever just waffles utter shit and you don't know whats going on in the game. Pompey away last year sent me insane because I had no idea a game of football was being played as they were chatting so much shit.

There are long periods of a match where the ball is not in play. What's a radio commentator supposed to do? Just be silent?

Referring to pundits by their full name is for the benefit of people joining the commentary who don't know who they are. It's common practice.

When you listen to comms from the opposition you realise that ours is by no means the worst.

The only decent/observant commentator is Wendy Staton
We have not had an expert co since Keith Edwards
Someone who will say it as it is
Take most of it like EVERY commentator on United as basically ignorant and partisan.
I would like a none partisan GENUINE expert like Ronnie Moore or John Newsome who usually does Leeds
who will actually point out the reality of football and how badly we approach games
I heard Peter Duffield on SUTV a couple of seasons ago in a pre season game
Not heard him since
;)

As for Cruyf turns
I cannot remember seeing one involving United for a lot longer than this season.
Nor Mick Hills trick
Nor David Bradfords
Although McAtee may have done that playing for Man City on his return
(The TV was partly obscured)
