I have been a big football fan for 56 years but I dont really know what a DoF really does.
In a nutshell, I think the manager picks the team and does the interviews basically. The DOF does everything else regarding the operations of running the club, dealing with contracts etc etc.

I may be wrong, but that's my understanding.

Also until the article this week I noticed the Danny Hall propaganda machine had gone quiet and he wasn’t rocking the boat either. I guarantee we’d have had a new article every few days about the board / manager being underprepared if Selles were still here.
I don't know how he's a sports writer honestly i don't,compared to tony pritchard legend ,DH can't write a child's story .Goes on about other teams signings we all know this .

Basset would be ideal last summer. Spending 9m on mguiness and wasting money there offered business is causing concern there was so many concerns on that interview hamers replacement Will be a loan the problem is the teams around us are getting better .

If that is correct then you need to have the right partnership of the manager and DoF to make it work. A lot of DoFs over the years have never played professional football.

It’s blindingly obvious that we don’t have any money.

The PL money has stopped. We set fire to the best part of 20 million last summer on crap like mcguinness, zaterstrom, matos etc etc. who are already going tk be shipped out for cents on the dollar.

When you add the money wasted on Cannon its no surprise we aren’t being funded.

I like chris as a manager but he talks about ‘Not putting the club at risk’. What was rhe point in the business last jan - we were miles off getting close the the play offs.

But we spend millions on some full back the didnt play, Phillips who physically cant play, rothwell who’s crap. Pointless outlay, same as a waste of a wage on the ancient right back we've signed this year who’s worse than femi

We dont fritter away that money. Maybe we can offer brooks a contract worth his potential.
"Not putting the club at risk" and then spent the whole of this summer chasing targets well outside our, clearly limited, budget (souttar, phillips, BBD et al).

Not to mention the previous money wasted on Cannon, McBurnie, Brewster, C. Robinson, L. Freeman, Rodwell, Morison, Mousset etc....

We're in this shit state cause he burnt through the premier league money on shite players.

A DoF doesn't need to have played the game if he has a team around him that's competent and can be trusted.

One of the main benefits of the DoF structure is to take emotion out of the decision making process and focus on what's good for the club in the long run, rather than signing a player cause you owe the agent a favour or you think a player is a good lad.

  • Player analytics highlight where the team performs well and where the team has gaps.
  • Recruitment / Scouting look for players with the required characteristics that fill that gap.
  • The long list is shared with the first team coaching staff and manager and a short list drawn up from the favourites.
  • Short list is presented to the DoF to negotiate the purchases.

Player contracts/options are incredibly complicated, this is why you want a commercial expert rather than a football expert doing it.

How do you get players to sign contracts when they don't want to? It happens to far bigger clubs than United.
By not paying poor wages and leaving negotiations until the end when the balance of power sits with the player.

It does happen at other clubs, but let’s not pretend we aren’t repeat offenders here for it happening to our top talent.

At the end of the day, we now know where we stand. We knew it already, as punters (lol) but we've had it spelt out now in black and white. We aren't competing for fees, we aren't going to be big spenders, we largely go with what we've got.

I just wish we would have acted with this realism from the get go. Stop posturing with bids for Souttar or suggesting you'll spaff away funds on Phillips. Spend within your means, plan accordingly, and start a rebuilding. I don't mind intriguing signings for decent prices, over busted flushes and expensive top end players. At least it adds a bit of interest to see how the squad develops.

What I do resent, is if we know what division we were in, what resources we had, what we needed, and who the manager was going to be, why on earth didn't we start recruitment accordingly? Go for the lad at Barnsley, the lad at Boreham Wood etc...

I like how he mentioned getting the best out of players like Cooper, Burrows, Seriki, Chong and others whilst seemingly forgetting he’s worked with these players already for the best part of a season now.

It sounds to me like:

A - CW knows he’s got what he’s got to work with and doesn’t know how to do that

B - We’re putting all our eggs into the Souttar basket, the Hamer money will help make that happen, so we can pay probably over the odds and pray he doesn’t get injured again

C - The owners have allocated money elsewhere instead of transfers to ensure the longevity of the club. They’ve probably looked at the money spent last summer (including Wilders signings) and tightened the purse strings.

Fun season incoming.

I think fundamentally our owners aren’t football people, so they rely on other people to advise, eg Bord, Wilder, Bettis, but equally none of those advisors have the required knowledge to grow a football club.

Bord - Clown experimenting with AI
CW - A manager struggling badly to find precious form but backed long term to deliver, hence feeling significant pressure and in a deeper hole than under the Prince it seems.
Bettis - Self admittedly not of a football background.

Because, despite all evidence to the opposite, Wilder sees himself as a top tier manager and has become obsessed with big names like Phillips & Souttar. He’d see players like Cleary as beneath him.

I love it when someone posts their out of their arse opinion and someone reacts as if it's fact
Then we need to know our place in the ladder. Those days are gone for now, we blew it.

Sounds good in theory but in practise, will it work at SUFC?

I have been a big football fan for 56 years but I dont really know what a DoF really does.
Strategic Planning and Club Philosophy

Define a long-term football vision for the club.
Establish a unified playing style and philosophy from the academy to the first team.
Ensure continuity when first-team managers or head coaches change

Transfers and Recruitment

Lead player scouting, data analysis, and talent identification networks.
Negotiate player contracts, transfers, and renewals alongside financial departments.
Balance squad needs with budget limitations and financial regulations.

Department Management and Coordination

Supervise sports science, medical, and physiotherapy operations.
Oversee youth academy development and pathways to the senior squad.
Support and evaluate the first-team coaching staff.

Great response that honestly the saying pot kettle black or something ,wilders spunked millions away as he says lol .

The club will be negotiating all the time. United do not pay poor wages relative to this division. Extensions of contracts happen all the time, which you'll just ignore. You are just focusing on the ones that don't go our way, so no, we are not repeat offenders.

Which key players have recently extended their contracts?

In the last few years which ones have gone our way other than when players were breaking into the first team?

Let him go, I don't want anyone who doesn't really want to be here. And to Coventry, yes Coventry, the city that is full of grey and a football team that apart from a cup win in 87 has never done anything, never brought through any quality players, I think the most famous is ogrizivic and Gary mcsheffrey and that's it. Nothing club but enjoying a moment in the sun. Let's hope they have got more kebab shops for billy bunter, fuck him.....UTB

You tell me. You are the one making the claims.
I can’t tell you something that hasn’t happened.

I can tell you who has left with one year or less left on their deal, for a far lower price. None of which we ever really replaced.

Ndiaye
Berge
Anel
Bogle
And now, Hamer.

We also let one of our most expensive signings ever, Oli McBurnie, walk away for zero.

I doubt a DOF does everything else. I think a DOF is primary responsible for recruitment and strategy across all the playing sides, creating pathways from the academy to the first team, defining the playing style etc.
I doubt he/she would deal with contracts except in terms of recommending terms to the CEO or whoever negotiates them.
But I guess it varies from club to club.

We probably need to be stricter in how we operate contracts. For example sign a player on a 4 year deal. If they don't want to renew after 2 seasons then look to move them on, no fucking about waiting til the final year.

Maybe with Gus we hoped Leeds were going to give us what we wanted price wise last summer and it didn't happen.

So Carl Scheiber then!

That’s basically what he does, what you outlined there.

If we call him that will everyone stop suggesting this is some sort of silver bullet?

Remember that terrible season Spurs has last year -> DoF.

It’s about getting quality decision makers into the club and outing those that aren’t. Call them what you want.

I’m surprised Hoyland and Allen are both unscathed after last season’s mess.

Exactly. The management of it is poor given it’s a repeating pattern for top players.

And if we hoped Leeds were going to give us the same price as 12 months ago then that commercial naivety is telling.

The logic you offer does make sense but the signings last summer are reasons why we should not offer four year contracts. Extend after the first year of a three year contract with the option in our favour
