I'd imagine with most clubs its a game of brinkmanship . Assessing the financial situation of the buyer , the seller doing the same , whos need is greater , how far can you push it , whats the value to them and us etc.

Its a game within the game, trying not to blink 1st , agents fielding stories of other interested parties .

Every club ultimately wants the players they need for the best price they can negotiate whilst the clock ticks .

Outside those super clubs throwing 100's of millions about , its the same for everyone.

1. I want him to stay, he's our best player and a joy to watch. If we were arguably in with a shout of promotion, I'd say keep at all costs, roll the dice and risk him leaving for free.

This needs to be sorted ASAP so we can reinvest the money. Don't want to go into the season where he starts the first week then leaves as although I think CW will have his targets; it could be that a few would have already moved to another club and we end up with a 35-year-old.

I’d even go so far as to say we have no obligation to reach a fair value. We’re not sponsored by Friends Reunited. I hope IF they get him it’s at a very unfair value to them and they end up paying over the odds to prise him away. If they want him so much then make them pay. It’s not the make a wish foundation. We’re not here as the facilitators to create a nice story narrative for Coventry.

We all know we can’t replace him directly. It will take a change of system IF he goes.

I hope he stays. If you imagine that Hull and Coventry may be the only two to take him at that level, then in 12 month’s time, there is every chance they will be back at this level anyway. Who os to say that even at the end of his contract that the next batch of promoted teams will even fancy him?

Must be a set of circumstances where we look at a new deal if the window closes and he’s still here.

It’s not as if at 30 he will be able to command a huge signing on fee and let’s be honest, little gets made of it but players can also get a decent signing on fee just for renewing their deal.

I think Souttar leaves simply because it makes no sense for a defender who performed well enough at the WC to have to play third tier, especially when he wasn’t really part of the relegated team who you could say should “own” the ‘R’.

However I do see Hamer’s situation as different. He’s very good but it’s not as if PL is his accepted level.

It would be a silly thing to down tools or not be arsed. However you look at it he’s playing for a contract this season, whether it’s here or elsewhere. Underperforming purposely isn’t going help him secure a wage increase.

As for player values we have no idea what players are going to be worth, peck two seasons on is proof of that, if it wasn’t for arblasters injury he may have never got the chance.
