It’s just what United do

It’s the waste that frustrates me. We went through all the effort to get to the premier league (twice) and the only legacy is a new car park and some LED signs.

I can deal with united being crap, we’ve been crap for most of my time following them. It’s the wasting of an opportunity to put us on a different path I find so frustrating.

It’s just as hard reading those for who Wilder can do no wrong.

I’ve repeatedly tried to balance any criticism with objectivity.

What CW has done for us for me puts him right at the top of the managers I’ve seen in my time watching the Blades.

But something isn’t quite firing though, and if I’m honest I’m not sure what can be done.

What i do strongly feel is that the problems, such as they are, aren’t all his fault.

We seem to have a board who don’t know the direction of travel. Who thought they’d get a quick profit flip then sell on. When that went tits up they have no idea what is next.

I wasn’t thrilled at the thought of Wilder 3.0, but financially it was the the only realistic card that COH could play from a financial point of view.

So we are where we are. The parachute payments have run out and a new financial reality is upon us.

Wilder will stay, it’s the least worst option as we stand. 10 games in if it’s not working then it’s a different conversation. But the financial issues will still be there. Which raises the question who would come into a situation like that, and what could they do with a paltry budget?

Weve fumbled it every time we've been up stretching further back and never rolled the dice to try and stay up either. Once we've made it our recruitment has been absolutely shocking - no wonder no one wants us up there.

Then we have no plan for when we are relegated just hope we bounce back.

That's realism.
I don't understand what's wrong with acknowledging where we're at.
All these accusations of "moaning / glass half-full" are like water off a duck's back to me.
We've had 3 big chances in my lifetime of support to make progress in the top tier - Harris , Bassett & Wilder.
We've thrown them all away through sheer incompetence at the club.
If that doesn't break your heart , I don't know why not.
I still have my ST and sing on the kop at 68 years young.
But the ownership bollox in recent years has left me cold.
The recruitment of duds is comical.
The entertainment value on the pitch is quite depressing.
The manager has gone from lauded hero to stubborn & clueless.
The finances are shot to shit , after a period of unprecedented income.
I really can't see how we stop the slide , especially when we've chucked all our £ away.
But I'll still keep singing , hoping the lads in red & white can win the game.
Looking for a hero or two to make me smile and be proud of my club.
But it does get harder to do.
No doubt about that.

Ten failed playoff campaigns.

Ten chances to be in a higher division, with the extra money that comes with that.

Six of these campaigns would have seen us up to the PL.

What a waste of a chance to improve your own position.

Plus also the seven cup semi finals reached in my lifetime, and not even one fluke victory.

Everyone of course is entitled to their own opinion, and the club fan base seems split especially on the Facebook sites with many feeling like me, but plenty criticising anybody that has the audacity to be seen as negative.

But while Middlesbrough for example, except and sell their best player quickly and then start replacing, ironically of course, including an ex United player. In fact, the football we have played in the last two seasons has been without doubt the worst I have ever seen. I certainly won’t drive 140 miles anymore to watch the shite that is being served up at the moment.

Other sides in the championship, whether they were relegated promoted or even the ones that did bugger all last season are spending money or certainly bringing players in . But of course, what’s the rush? Surely is better to wait until the very last minute, that’s just the United Way !

So much about our club is just underwhelming. Preseason games, okay we went and played Levante. And of course, the turnout in Germany yesterday was spectacular. (with Little reward.) but look at who Birmingham, Wrexham and others play while we ponce around playing local rivals, scraping the occasional victory and then boasting that we are unbeaten in preseason. Just underwhelming.

No doubt over the next week or so one or two will come in but who will go out? You can’t blame anybody, especially not Hamer that’s what happens in football.

But is such a disappointment after the first promotion and the football and flair that was on offer. Now we seem to have no Plan B and plan A is pretty rubbish to start with.

Where is the second player that Wilder publicly said was coming through the door two weeks ago? Where is Phillips? Where are all the other players? so obviously needed Why are the owners so damn quiet. Can anybody actually coach in this club, do our players get any better? Why has Zatterstrom not improved he’s played for Sweden for fuck sake and we only have one centre back!

We are in danger or just being another ex Premier League club that gets squashed below so many others like QPR, like Stoke City like Swansea and many others. Anybody that thinks we have any chance of getting promoted this season really is, in my opinion in fantasy land. Many Unitedites, when we got relegated said the championship was much better anyway, good, because that’s where we are likely to be for an age unless the club has a serious makeover. Thank god at least we will be above Wednesday.

I will try again to get into Rugby League, follow the 49ers and try other random sports, but unfortunately after 60+ years I’m stuck with them, it’s part of me there nothing I can do about it and deep down that’s good enough for me. But please can we at least play a better brand of football to compensate for the likely disappointments ahead.

Almost word for word how I have felt about the Blades for the last two years. I missed loads of games last year because I just couldn't be bothered to be bored to tears by turgid football. 67 years a blade and this is just about as bad as I've seen, and yes I did experience some real lows with the likes of Adrian Heath, Adkins etc

Up to 10 years ago this forum was a decent place to discuss events, it's been downhill ever since and accelerated it's demise over the past couple of years or so.

The problem with Wilder is he is the victim of his own success.

He done well at his lower league clubs, he did amazingly well getting us up in the manner we did from L1 and into the Prem bypassing the pigs like we did - we were all in dreamland and it still remains one of the best footballing periods of my life vs one of Wednesdays worst.

But, Wilder’s success came to quickly in my mind. He had a group full of camaraderie and togetherness with flickers of talent. He had hard workers.

Unfortunately, this type of football and team ran out and getting into the prem a couple of times required more than that. It required good scouting, athletic players, players who will run, a strategy and a tactical vision - unfortunately, this is where Wilder fell down. He had no time to learn all this during the rollercoaster ride of getting us into the Prem.

In my eyes at least, he’s wasted an opportunity to become a really top manager. After he left us the first time he should’ve gone and studied instead of Watford and Boro. He should’ve gone abroad and mastered his art. Come back a better manager. But he hasn’t, he’s stifled himself and….hes stifled us.

When people say “this is the worst I’ve seen us” about the last two season I switch off. It’s simply not true - it’s just hyperbole.

Remember the last days of Bassett? Adrian Heath? Warnock’s 3rd season? Bryan Robson? Blackwell’s last season and all bar on season in the 3rd tier? That was a REAL chore.

It’s like when people talk about having a “connection with the group of players”. It has a direct correlation with winning football matches and on pitch success. Essentially it’s meaningless, it’s just something to say to fill a space.

Last season was actually not bad between October and January. Scoring 3/4 goals most games. Not great but I’m not ready for a shoes off protest just yet.

Can't we wait until the season get's underway and the transfer window closes . We start pulverising the club before the outgoings and incomings are sorted and who knows, we could be in a better place than some would have thought.
Sure, it's looking a bit iffy at the moment but for god's sake let's give the club a bit of leeway and see where the next few weeks take us. UTB!

It was Wilder himself who coined the phrase "a disconnect between club & fans" after the lap of dishonour under Adkins.
And he was quite right.
And the way he re-established that connection was truly inspired and inspiring. He was heroic in that period from 2016 to Covid.
A "connection" is not merely dependent on success - belief is a factor , seeing a plan of how to play is a factor , seeing a positive agenda by the club is a factor , having totally committed players is a factor , even if they are beaten in games.
But seeing obvious mistakes and wastes of money and opportunity erodes connection.

You’ve never been bothered about entertaining football in the past….you’ve often said the priority is the result.

Also what is turgid football?
In the recent years especially under Wilder we’ve played patient keep possession sideways football.
The short passing is pretty good but it’s all too slow and safe….plenty of passing amongst the back line…quite similar to England in the World Cup.

Would you rather we resort back to Warnock style kick and rush percentage football.
The football was very basic but there was generally plenty of goal mouth action, so could be entertaining, when it worked.

For me it rings true to a point but it’s far more to do with the leadership than the players.

Think about the Mike McDonald/Charles Green era - that was a real disconnect. Likewise the Oystons at Blackpool and countless other examples. Maybe McCabe to a certain extent as he began a process of managed decline all while using the club to further his personal business interests.

I don’t see a disconnect now, the players try their hardest, some just aren’t up to it, and we have a manager who most would agree wants the best for the club.

I don’t even think the wasted money creates a disconnect. It’s bad business sure but I don’t get the sense the owners are nefarious, just a bit naive about football.

The whole “connection” argument seems like a cheap get out for fans to refuse to get behind the team in hard times.

I’ve never said it’s about the result
If im paying £30-40 a game I want to be entertained not bored stupid.

Turgid football is passing sideways and backward all the time getting to edge of box stopping coming backwards.

We have zero pace or attacking threat now Brooks has gone all the midfielders we have are the same slow side to side and back.

If things keep going the way they are, (8 places up for grabs) this season, mid table next season may be good enough for play- offs.
 
We used to be a one touch team with Norwood, Lundstrum and Fleck in midfield, great to watch. Now we have three touch players...on a good day!!
