This summer window is shaping up to be a huge gamble from Wilder. Souttar, Phillips & Jairo as 3 key signings could be a masterstroke and give us a strong experienced spine to the team.

It just feels like we’re putting a lot of faith (and most of our budget!) in luck. These are 3 players with bad injury and/or fitness records that we can’t rely on getting 40+ games out of. Combine that with similar concerns over Cooper, Bamford, Campbell, Blaster etc then it feels like a recipe for disaster. One or two players like this in a squad we could carry - not 7!! It’s not like we’re bringing these players in knowing we have a good fitness / conditioning team.

Happy to be proven wrong when we keep 30 clean sheets and they’re all ever presents, as individually when fit these are top signings - but there’s just too much hoping & crossing fingers over these for me.

Like Coffee, its all about the blend. We needed some experience after last season as we were well and truly wet behind the ears. We brought in Riederwald and Bamford, and we were suddenly so much better.

You can have too many old uns, but i seem to recall reading that we had just about the youngest team in the Championship last season. Even if we have a few older heads, we still have Coops, Seriki, McCallum, Burrows, Peck, Arblaster, Donovan, Campbell, One, even BBD is only 27 if he signs. Its hardly Dads Army, even though some on here would have you believe otherwise. I reckon it could be a good cup of coffee at the Lane this season.

Rothwell, Jairo and Phillips are all a bit samey. I expect Peck to be sold (I'd also put him in that samey bracket) and Blaster may or may not come back as the player before his injury.
There isn't much pace or creativity in that bunch which is a concern.
I’d expect Jairo and KP to share the minutes, with Rothwell hopefully as back up for if/when they’re not fit.

I don't know, Phillips gets around more than Jairo and Rothwell. Granted he's not blessed with pace but he is mobile.

Just to reiterate…

The story of his loan at West Ham:

The midfielder joined the club on loan from Manchester City in January 2024 but endured a deeply frustrating stint plagued by form issues and fitness setbacks. [1, 2]

Injury Details
  • The Calf Injury: In May 2024, The London Evening Standard reported that Phillips picked up a calf problem in training after accidentally kicking the sole of a teammate's boot. This injury prematurely ended his season, forcing him to miss West Ham's final matches against Chelsea and Luton Town. [1, 2]
  • Earlier Hamstring Strain: Prior to the calf issue, Phillips also spent about two weeks sidelined in April 2024 due to a hamstring strain tweaked during a training session.

The story of his loan at Ipswich..

His time with the Tractor Boys was heavily disrupted by fitness issues, preventing him from stringing together consistent game time. Manager Kieran McKenna and local reports documented several distinct injury setbacks throughout the year: [1, 2, 3]

Injury Timeline at Ipswich Town
  • September 2024 (Thigh): Just a month into his loan, he missed a match against Southampton due to a minor thigh muscle injury picked up late in training. [1]
  • November 2024 (Ankle): He sidelined himself for three consecutive matches while managing a lingering ankle issue. [1, 2]
  • February 2025 (Calf): During a 4–1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, Phillips was forced off in the 80th minute with a calf problem, which ruled him out of subsequent matches. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  • March 2025 (Foot Laceration): Phillips suffered a severe gash on his foot during a game against Nottingham Forest that required more than 20 stitches, keeping him out of training. [1]
  • May 2025 (Achilles): Toward the end of the campaign, McKenna confirmed that Phillips suffered an Achilles injury that ended his season early. This ultimately required surgery, keeping him out of action until August 2025. [1, 2, 3]
Because of these recurring setbacks, Phillips was restricted to just 14 Premier League starts

The story of his loan Sheffield United ..(part 1)

An injury occurred during a chaotic Steel City derby against Sheffield Wednesday on 22 February 2026. In the 49th minute of that match, Phillips was shown a straight red card for a high boot challenge. During that same "innocuous challenge", he tweaked his knee. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
The details regarding his injury include:
  • The Injury: A knee problem that required a minor "clean-up" surgical operation. [1, 2]
  • The Recovery: He spent time back at his parent club, Manchester City, for initial assessment and treatment before returning to Sheffield United to finish his rehabilitation. [1, 2]
  • Impact on Season: Because the injury coincided with his red-card suspension and subsequent recovery, he was sidelined for the remainder of his loan spell. He ultimately only made three appearances for the Blades during the 2025–26 Championship campaign. [1, 2, 3]

The future is yet to be written but I am sensing a pattern here….

Oh!...fff fuckg hell!!

Looks like we are going to have a midfield with no pace and a history of injury worries.
Coupled with taking a gamble with a centre half who also has a history of injuries.
Maybe we should be investing bringing in a Harley Street physio too.

You have to keep the medical staff busy.

Hard evidence of the size of risk Wilder is taking

Meanwhile, he crosses his fingers and hopes it comes off.

He's trusting his future, and ours, to this.

Crossing fingers and hoping for the best is not a transfer policy.

If we're going to gamble to this extent then I suggest we keep Peck as well, because then we might have enough to properly go for promotion
Worh Jairo, Bamford, Souttar, Phillips, and a few more all having recent injuries I do feel the club shop is missing a trick if they aren’t offering Prayer Mats by the dozen!

Must be a risk we will have the best team on paper that we never manage to get together on grass. Maybe our front of shirt logo should be 🤞

Or 🚮

You would expect that if we are trying to sign Phillips and Souttar then one of our few assets is leaving to help fund it.

A strong spine of the team is essential if the club has its sights on a top 8 finish.

Cooper (back to his best)
Souttar
Phillips Jairo Blaster (back to his best)
Bamford

The issue of course as many say, is staying fit.

Peck or Burrows (or both) I guess are favs to leave, unless we’ve got lucky and this Nigel Dawn fella is investing in the club?

People won't realise that at the euros when he was fit he covered more ground than anyone in the tournament in the first 3 match faze 32.6 kilometres
He's not a sprinter but a good covering midfielder

He's received 7 red cards in his career, 4 of them were at Leeds
I would also point out that in the very few games he played on loan to West Ham, Ipswich and us, he received a red card in each loan spell Statistically that is some going! How many games?

Fair enough. They were both 2nd yellows, not straight reds.

I don't claim to know how bad the tackles were to receive those yellows though
