Those attendances in the North East (that apparent 'hotbed of football') are not very impressive.

There was a bit of a controversy about venues for the semi finals but will leave it to you in posting the updates :)
As Silent mentioned there was some hint that there may be an issue regarding the Semi-Final venues , some rumblings on 21 July 1966
It had been stated in the FA Handbook on the competition that if England win their group (which they have) and if they then win the Quarter-Final our Semi-Final will be at Goodison Park but it appears a decision will now take place after the Quarter-Finals .
England have a couple of worries going into the game v Argentina , one surrounds Stiles ,the FA have received a letter from FIFA warning about his conduct,Ramsey is furious and worries this may effect his game and the potential arose that Hunter may replace him , the other worry is Greaves who has stitches in a leg wound but although England may be worried Greaves isn't saying he has played with worse injuries ,
Reports on Argentina radio reports that England have been kicked-out of the competition because of player(s) failing a drug test ,,, totally untrue , no drug tests have proved positive
Italy return home to rotten tomatoes and eggs been thrown at them due to their failure to qualify for the Quarter-Final and especially their failure against North Korea
With 8 teams now heading home and 8 heading to the Quarter-Final the bookies revised odds are ,, Portugal 3/1 favourites ,, England 7/2 ,, West Germany 4/1 ,, Hungary 4/1 ,, Argentina 8/1 ,, USSR 9/1 ,, Uruguay 20/1 ,, North Korea 100/1 ,,

Those attendances in the North East (that apparent 'hotbed of football') are not very impressive.
The groups had been split into 4 areas London (Wembley & White City ) Midlands (Villa Park & Hillsborough) ,North West (Old Trafford & Goodison Park) North East (Ayresome Park & Roker Park) ,of the 8 grounds used in 1966 ,White City , Ayresome Park , Roker Park no longer exist , Wembley has been demolished and rebuilt Goodison now is the venue for Everton ladies Old Trafford is unrecognisable and there are now suggestions they may move ,Villa Park still holds the charm and character of an propper old football ground while Hillsborough put a roof on the kop and it has had a lick of paint since 1966 but noone can remember when exactly and there is no photographic evidence ,,With the group phase completed with 5 games at Wembley , 1 at White City with the others all staging 3 matches, the average attendance at each was , Wembley 81667 ,White City 45662 , Goodison Park 52391, Villa Park 43837 , Hillsborough 33427 , Old Trafford 26484 , Roker Part 23673 Ayresome Park 18209

Friday 22 July 1966 ,, the day before the Quarter-Finals and England fears are confirmed Jimmy Greaves will not be fit enough to face Argentina tomorrow, one option for Ramsey would be to bring Geoff Hurst into the side , further afield Brazil manager Vincente Feola has had effergy of himself burned in Rio DeJanerio during protests about Brazil's performance, he is remaining in England to watch the rest of the tournament but his wife has police protection at their home ,North Korea are casting doubt that Sheffield FC is the worlds oldest club , without naming them directly the North Koreans are now claiming to have invented football , it has been decided that if any of tomorrow's Quarter-Finals are level after 90 minutes there will be 30minute extra time (15min each-way) but that if the tie is still level the winner will be decided by the drawing of lots ( no penalty shoot outs back in 1966) , The greyhounds are once again causing a problem for The World Cup at Wembley , following on from the France v Uruguay game which had to be moved from Wembley to White City because the owners of Wembley refused to alter their regular Friday night greyhound racing , the same issue has arisen Argentina were supposed to be allowed training time on the Wembley pitch the day before their game with England but were refused because of the greyhound racing

Saturday 23 July 1966 Quarter-Finals Day ,, with all 4 games kicking-off at 3pm
At Wembley Geoff Hurst plays instead of the injured Jimmy Greaves , scoring the 78th minute winner to put England into the Semi-Final with Argentina being reduced to 10 men on 35 minutes when (OUR) Antonio Ratin was sent-off , it took 7 minutes between him being sent-off and play restarting as he refused to leave the field and even then sat on the bench instead of going down the tunnel escorted by police England lined up Banks Cohen Wilson Stiles JCharlton Moore Ball Hunt RCharlton Hurst Peters
The game didn't end well with Ramsey dragging shirt back off George Cohen as he was doing the customery shirt swap with Alberto Gonzalez , Ramsey referring to the Argentina team as animals but it didn't end there as Argentina players jostled the referee in the tunnel a FIFA official who attempted to intervene claims he was spat at , There were 90584 at Wembley , and while Argentina were having a player sent off at Wembley,, Uruguay were having 2 sent off in Sheffield as they crashed out 4-0 in front of 40007 against West Germany they were already trailing by one goal at Half-Time before early 2nd half marching orders ( 49&54minutes) , with West Germany scoring 3 times in the last 20 minutes ,, Up in Sunderland 26844 saw USSR defeat Hungary by 2 goals to 1 ,, Meanwhile at Goodison Park an amazing game 40248 saw North Korea take a 3 goal lead in 25 minutes ,, with Eusebio scoring twice before the break then another 2 after Half-Time with Augusto getting a 5th to make the Final Score Portugal 5 North Korea 3
Despite witnessing a great game on Merseyside, Liverpudlians are left angry when it is announced that their Semi-Final will be the USSR v West Germany game and NOT England v Portugal , they had thought they would be getting the England match , there is even talk of fans boycotting the Semi-Final at Goodison Park
There had been confusion ,, The FIFA handbook had said " The 2 Semi-Final matches will be played at Goodison Park on Monday 25 July and at Wembley on Tuesday 26 July , but the actual allocation of grounds will not be made until the competing teams are known" BUT fans in Liverpool and The North had fully expected England to play their game at Goodison Park because of The FA handbook which read differently stating "if successful in in the Quarter-Finals, England will proceed to Liverpool to play The Semi-Final at the ground of Everton FC on 25 July ,the party will travel to Liverpool on the 24th" , so clear misunderstanding and miscommunication between FA ,FIFA & Everton
2 further things , firstly after his rough treatment Pele announces he will not be playing in the Mexico 1970 World Cup
And an interesting foul count fro Wembley in England's game v "the animals " of Argentina
Argentina committed 19 fouls
England committed 33 fouls

The day after the day before and it's not good
FIFA threaten to ban Argentina from Mexico 1970
(OUR) Rattin banned for 4 games
Onega banned 3games for spitting at FIFA official
Ferreiro banned 3 games assaulting the ref in the tunnel
Argentina fined ( the maximum) £83 , 6s , 8d
Ramsey barred from entering Argentina because of "animals" comments
Armed guard at British Embassy in Buenos Aires
Ref said he sent-off (OUR) Ratin because of how he looked at him
(OUR) Rattin says England will win World Cup because refs are bias
Also saying he was just asking for an interpreter
Argentinian newspaper "Cronica" said "English stole the ame , they still have pirates in The Caribbean and stole The Malvinas"
Jack& Bobby Charlton who were both booked in the game were warned over their future conduct
( I did say it wasn't good !!!)
Meanwhile back in Sheffield , 2 youngsters , Jean & John Blagden waited patiently outside Hillsborough and got a couple of autographs from the defeated Uruguay team ,
When they got the message translated , the first said " the referee is a their " ,, the 2nd " German thieves stole the game from Uruguay"
,,, on a sad note Antonio Rattin who was for a short time associated with United passed away on 11 July 2026 (RIP)

Just 2 days after the Quarter -Finals West Germany & USSR ( NOT England) head to Goodison Park for the first Semi-Final , People in Liverpool really not happy with the choice of Semi-Final given to Goodison , of the 5 games at Everton today was the lowest attendance (47308,51387,58479,40248) today Semi-Final being 38273 , with police removing banners inside the ground critisising FIFA and reports of touts giving away tickets outside the ground, On the pitch West Germany reach The Final by beating USSR 2-1 ,After Haller puts West Germany ahead on 43 minutes ,USSR have Chislenko sent-off a minute later , so play the entire 2nd half with 10 men ,Beckenbauer adds a 2nd on 67 and although USSR pull one back with 2 minutes left it's too late ,
Looking forward to tomorrow game at Wembley Eusebio mentions he hopes the referee keeps an eye on Stiles adding he thought the referee at the Argentina game favoured the English , obviously wanting to put pressure on the referee ,

Ramsey is warned by FIFA about his future conduct following his "animals" comment about Argentina
Further afield riot police in both Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are waiting to protect the Brazil players when they return home but are not needed as no fans are at the airport
Following the first Semi-Final the bookies now have West Germany 6/5 favourites , Portugal 2/1 ,, with England the outsiders at 3/1
