£8m initial fee it's been reported. Sad to see him go, but it's a decent fee for an exciting (yet inconsistent) winger. If he has fallen out with Wilder and wants to leave us for f*cking Norwich, then we have to take the money and reinvest it. Hopefully it means we can retain Peck for another year, although knowing us, we'll sell him on deadline day!

Why? Don't even try to make the "it will enable us to buy players a, b and c" argument. Look at it in a vacuum. If it is a bad transfer, then it also meant that we did not bring in players x and y, and also needed to sell player z.

Of course, it is always hard to say what to think given that the club (understandably) won't actually disclose the exact transfer fee, but if they are obliged given the deal to not do so, they could reassure they've got close to value by saying something like "an eight figure sum". Which they didn't.

Because if we end up with a significantly better squad at the end of the window than at the end of last season then I’m not going to be overly bothered who leaves the club.

Obviously if we sell someone for much lower than their value or pay way over the odds then that’s a major issue and a problem with a single transfer, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with Brooks.

DoF would have made no difference at all in my opinion in this case.

The issue here is cash.

We won't have been willing to stump up cash earlier in his contract in order to extend it, because we don't have it or don't want to spent it.

We also have a hole of 40m in contrast to last year that the owners will want to fill before stumping up their own cash.

What we needed was owners with a pair of balls and some money and by the looks of it we have neither.

But then that comment may be proven to be unfair by the time the window ends.

Brooks didn't slip out the door when Wilder wasn't looking. He hasn't signed a deal because the club didn't want to stump up the cash and it suits us to bring in a wad of cash to replace that not coming from Sky/PL. The narrative of an underpaid player wanting to move for more money will suit the club fine. For Norwich, didn't Delia sell up to some American with cash? And didn't they sell Sargeant?

As for United, I've spent almost 50 years supporting them. This doesn't even scratch the surface. My recommendation is see where we are in September and don't let the bastards grind you down. No point getting upset. You can't change it anyway!

Any well run club keeps their better assets (especially young ones) on 3 year minimum deals. Once you enter the last two the player has almost all the negotiating power.

Young lads breaking into the team who the club rate as long term prospects should be on four or five year deals with options. You then renegotiate a significant bump when they get to three years to bump it up to a competitive wage at the level they're at. They sign initially because they need the stage and to build their reputation. They sign again because three more years on academy or academy + money (e.g. Ndiaye's first deal) isn't very attractive for a starting Champ player with a burgeoning reputation even if they are looking away. Take a year on 20,000 a week and leave anyway is always an option.

If somebody comes in when they have 3 + years you ask big money. If it suits both parties toodles. Once again we are showing off in the media because we have players on two year deals, and we are losing a young player who isn't tied down. Frustrating

Firstly, I am just as annoyed as anyone else that Brooks has gone. But I keep seeing comments like this - the facts don't actually back this up:

I'd say the majority he has signed 30 or over has been a resounding success or at least very useful. Rothwell and Phillips probably his worst two of that list. Jagielka at 36 is something of an outlier. He's signed 3 players over the age of 31 in all his years with us.

Up to now the owners have been incompetent by hiring Seles,spunking money on terrible loans, then rehiring a manager that is behind time with football and tactics. Brooks put a post on Instagram recently referencing a lack of appreciation. It was quite clear what he was referring to, we saw it all last season.

It's not everyone's opinion, but we need to move to a DoF model or similar. We can't keep letting Wilder and his mates run all things football.

It feels a shame to me, this. It doesn't feel like the right time to sell Brooks & Seriki, they're progressing very well and one more season (probably) would've seen their value increase significantly.

Therein lies the problem of not having a DOF structure. The club is in a financial mess. No parachute payments and a pending court case overseas not forgetting the owners still owe a considerable amount to the Prince. So it should be no surprise assets are being sold off. The problem is when you do not have a competent off field structure that delegates recruitment and sales to experienced football men. One good championship season and Brookes will be worth double the alleged £10 million fee. Norwich are on the up. They have the off field structure and £20 million in the pocket from the sale of Sargeant. Add in Clement an experienced manager who has managed in the champions league and they are potentially one of the favourites for the title. Why wouldn't Brooks want to go to an ambitious club.

A DOF avoids contract extension delay. Effectively manages disputes between players and football managers and has the negotiating skills to get the best possible deal for SUFC. This deal isnt the best for SUFC. Its the best for Brooks. It has all the hallmarks of the Ndiaye mess we got into last time where the player delayed signing a contract extension and left on his terms.

Brooks was young, athletic, pacy and got fans off their seats. He was one of the few players worth watching last season and will be a significant loss.

This has conveniently slipped out whilst the manager is in the USA at the World Cup and golf. It suggests the Club knew there would be an adverse reaction and have gone for damage limitation. Its just another example of the current reactive management style that alienates supporters.
