Amazing. That Jones is a player i have never heard of. Mever seen him mentioned on here either.

On the appointment you’d say it has some logic; Jones is a recent footballer with big club exposure. He can relate to modern players and his playing days are known.

You wonder how much the likes of Peck and Arblaster can relate to Knill other than being a nice guy. The trappings of a modern footballer are far away from his heyday as a player.

Nothing lasts forever but the club has to evolve somehow.

Also did one of the greatest tackles I’ve ever seen.. with his head.

It's a very valid point Knill is 62 this year whilst Peck is 22, Phil Jones (this is a 1st now, coaching wise that I know of) is younger than me at 34. Jones played for England at the 2018 World Cup and capped 27 times in total along with 169 matches for Man United winning the FA Cup and Europa League. Although doing well at playing level doesn't automatically make you a great coach, it is clearly something he is wanting, he talks a good game. He might not have the legacy of Jaap Stam playing career wise but Jaap Stam's coaching career hasn't had any major highlights yet.

There’s a decent body of evidence showing that elite level players don’t make great managers, they struggle understanding why players can’t execute what they want not realising the difference in ability.

Players with less illustrious careers won’t be asking for pin point 70 yard passes or a winger to beat three defenders.

Some CAN do it - Some can't (Bryan Robson springs to mind!)
but how do you know if they're not given a chance??

Really don't see a problem with this. He talks a good game!

I really do recommend for people to listen to any podcasts/videos he is on and I'm sure you will change your mind if you're against this appointment.
Hopefully with the addition of 1 maybe 2 quality central defenders and Phil Jones in the coaching role we are stronger defensively next season and we don't lose so many points from winning positions

Interesting interview in the Star where he admits hes learning on the job. Now every coach should always be learning but lets hope he learns pretty quick as a first 11 championship environment isnt one where you want to be showing any lack of knowledge....especially when you are hardly any older than some of the players.

Not saying he wont be a success but what made COH choose him out of all the multitude of coaches out there?....In fact i remember asking the same question when they appointed Selles.

Maybe they listened to the opinions of people who’ve worked with him? Selles issue doesn’t automatically mean they’ll get it wrong again.

Out of the multitudes you refer to, who would you suggest?

Not my job mate, I ve got a different one amd hopefully COH are better 'qualified' to make that decision.. As I said I'm not saying he wont be a success but interesting how a top 25 club is happy to let people learn on the. job irrespective of the opinions of others

You wonder how the likes of Beckham and Scholes related to Sir Alex. After all he was a lot older than them. Maybe Man U should have sacked Fergie after he hit 60 because after all, the club had to evolve.

Selles talked a good game too.

I’m happy with Phil Jones coming in as a coach learning his role. He’s already got his badges and done some coaching at Man U at U18 level and end of last season at Blackburn. He’s got to start somewhere…. I guess same as Frank Lampard & Michael Carroll……. and they are doing ok.
Can't say I've ever heard of Michael Carroll.

Like this appointment. On first impressions he brings an energy and that's what it feels like the situation needs, an injection of fresh energy and ideas.

As his playing career was notable for the vast amount injuries he had, maybe now's the time for Helmy to bring in the top medical staff. Just to deal with the consequences of appointing a coach with the reputation of putting his head where others would fear for their boot..

Very fair comparison, especially when you consider both had 7 Premier League titles when they hit sixty and were the current defending Champs 🤣

Surely it’s a good sign that a player of Phil Jones calibre has decided that United is a good place for him to launch his career in senior coaching.

I can’t think there are many clubs outside of the top prem clubs which would have turned their noses up at having him on staff if they had space available.

They were going to sack him before that!
"Manchester United were on the brink of sacking Sir Alex Ferguson in December 1989, following a dismal run of results and a humiliating 5-1 defeat to rivals Manchester City in September. The breaking point and subsequent rescue unfolded as follows:
The Crisis: After three seasons without a trophy, fans turned hostile and unfurled banners reading: "Three years of excuses and we're still going strong! United is not Aberdeen."
"The Rumored Ultimatum: Ahead of an FA Cup third-round tie against Nottingham Forest in January 1990, it is widely accepted by board members and the press that the club was ready to fire him if they lost.
The Turning Point: United won the match against Forest 1-0—famously thanks to a Mark Robins goal—which bought Ferguson the time to rebuild the team.

Not trying to compare anyone. Just pointing out that it is possible to be a decent coach of younger players if you are old. There are numerous other examples.

It shouldn't matter what age you are as long as you can still do your job. Just like race or gender, age discrimination is supposed to be illegal. Would you sack a black coach because he 'can't relate' to white players?

The point was it may have been a consideration when bringing a new person in, one of many given we have ended up with a younger staff.

But it would simply be that the club wanted fresh ideas.

We most likely won’t know, but as we won’t then that’s why we offer possible explanations on here.
