Having a quieter moment whilst working in Belgium 🇧🇪 and got to thinking of the World Cup , and my best England 11 since I took real notice of the team during the 1970 World Cup .

Ive pondered and decided that the following is my choice of the best England 11 since I started noticing .

Here we go - whats yours

Banks

Pearce , Stones , Moore , Cooper

Rice

Gascoigne , B Charlton. Bell

Channon

Macdonald

That's a tough one.

It's made even more difficult in that in my lifetime we had Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard - all world class, but as proven, they couldn't work together

What about Walker? Arguable whether anyone has been better than him.

Well, at least in my lifetime Neville has been better (and, if running with a wing back set up, I would put Beckham there as he would be completely natural in that formation), but even looking like for like in the same time period I would prefer any one of Trippier, James or Trent. The latter only if you are going batshit insane and require zero defensive talent.

The latter 3 aren't in Walker's class as a right back. Neville was a good player but lacked Walker's speed, athleticism and strength.

Purely on England performances

Pickford

Walker Ferdinand Campbell Cole

Ince Platt Gazza

Owen Shearer Lineker
I like this lineup. I think Campbell was super underrated in comparison to players like Adams and Terry. Not as successful at league level, but he stepped up for England and led a great partnership with Ferdinand for short while....far better than when Terry replaced him. Although it was not his usual role, I thought Ince was outstanding as the defensive midfielder in '96, and that position has always been our weakness. Again with Gazza, that was a great partnership.

Neville or Walker was a really hard choice. Neville was a better footballer (his crossing was excellent) I think but Walkers ability to handle being the last man back against anyone, and stop counter attacks swayed it for me.

There can be endless arguments about who should be included in England’s greatest ever team , but for me there are a few which are automatic choices .

These include the centre back pairing of Bobby Moore and Jack Charlton which was the best I ever saw , and the outstanding attributes and contributions of Bobby Charlton and Gary Lineker in their particular roles .

Banks
Neville, Campbell, Moore, Pearce/Cole
Gascoigne, Robson, Rice/Gerrard, Charlton,
Shearer, Kane

im from world cup 1998. so id go for a formation england shouldve played

--------------Pickford
Walker Ferdinand Terry A Cole
----Scholes -Rice -Bellingham
Beckham------Owen-------J Cole

Not sure how people are managing to leave Kane out, who is one of the best centre forwards of his era and England leading goal scorer by a distance of 26 goals…

53 goals in 120 matches.

England player of the year 4 times in 7 years.

Was the all time record scorer for 8 years.

All under the "expert leadership" of Eriksson, Mclaren, Capello & Hodgson...

All true but he was still rubbish for England.

He ended up with the goalscoring record just because he stuck around for so long.

When we needed him to perform in major tournaments he was nowhere to be seen.

I still think we would have won Euro 2004 if he'd not got injured against Portugal but every tournament after that he was woeful.
