Sorry if this has been discussed in another thread but I can't be arsed to read through them all.
Iv'e just watched Millwall v Hull and was amazed at the fitness of the Hull side compared to us. Ex Blades Egan who was running from one end of the pitch to the other at pace for the full 90 mins, Slater who like Egan ran and ran and added some real quality in midfield and McBurnie who I was never a fan of when he played for us knocked their defenders about and linked up well but the outstanding thing for me was the way he kept running his blood to water for the team.
Wilders first signing needs to be the Hull fitness coach because if he can get Egan and McB fit at their age then hopefully he can get our 60 min wonders firing on all cylinders.

If Oli cant run at 29 there's no hope ,there's no secrets about how to get to prime fitness

It’s not even just Hull who have better fitness, you can look at almost every other team in the EFL, and I think we’d possibly be the worse fitness wise. Truly laughable how unfit we are, boils down to coaching and how the players look after themselves imo.

Though, we didn’t have a “proper pre-season” this time so..

It will be interesting to see if most of the players are still blowing out of their arse on 60 mins next season.

Wilder made reference to fitness and conditioning last season and so this surely this will have been a priority as a result.

Perhaps they all think washing their hair with conditioner keeps them Head and Shoulders above everyone else in this division .............

Yeah but he was here for 7 months this season and fitness didnt improve.

There's no secret. Get players in early. Put them through a robust pre season fitness programme including but not limited to a series of competitive games. Rotate as and when necessary to avoid injury and burnout. Use January to add a sprinkle of real quality or to replace any long term injuries. Rinse and repeat.

The last time the club managed that was maybe the first Prem season. It's now a structural issue which will take multiple seasons to recover from due to the sheer number of players needed.

Can I suggest a suitable ' leave in' conditioner if we want them to last longer than 60 minutes?

The issue isn’t that our current players are less fit than the ones we had in 2018. The issue us that every other team has become more professional and signed better athletes. That’s particularly true in the top flight where we were so painfully mismatched physically last time out that we conceded 3 goals per game.

Until we start to prioritise athleticism over “culture” we are going nowhere.

Physicality and fitness.

These should be the words imprinted into CW and the recruitment team from now on. If any potential incoming players doesnt score highly on both, forget it and move onto the next target. Im absolutely fed up of seeing United look like a load of unfit teenage boys playing in a man's league. No excuses now in both recruitment and pre season fitness work. The buck now sits firmly with Wilder and if its not rectified this summer, he needs to be shown the door early next season.

When your boss creates an atmosphere that lads in the pub at the end of the day is great for bonding....
With a kebab chaser. 🤷

Good point, and it's a well known fact that they go to the Banner Cross, before and after every training session.

Bonding is much over rated. A team of fit Jordan Stewarts and Oli Burkes, is what we need.

Must be a real pain getting home for the lads who live across the pennines ,every night from Ecclesall Rd.
God there is some shit posted on here.

The apologists are out in force again I see.

I can see the impact of the lack of athleticism but am categorically not suggesting a return to a team of Burkes. What I want to see is balanced recruitment focussed on what a player will bring on the pitch in terms of tangible, measurable outputs rather than whether they "get the club".

Here are some facts which back up the hypothesis that our players were either unfit for the whole season or
  1. Only one team conceded more second half goals than our 41: Sheffield Wednesday (2026) with 49

  2. Only two sides had a worse 1st half vs 2nd half goal difference differential than our -10 (+5 first half, -5 second half)
    1. Blackburn, -12 differential was driven by goals conceded. The number of goals scored against them increased towards the end of each half (30 of their 56 were conceded between 31-45 mins and between 76-90 mins), suggesting a similar lack of fitness to us
    2. Hull, whose -12 goal difference differential came from them stopping scoring in the second half (-10 goals scored H2 vs H1). They tended to get in front then desperately hold on
  3. We conceded 19 goals in the 15 minutes after half time. Only one side (guess who!) had a worse fifteen minute spell and that was in the last 15 as their tiny squad suffered as opponents brought on subs. Wrexham, for what it's worth, matched our 19 in their final 15 minutes but at least they scored 17 in the same period

  4. Only three sides scored fewer than the 9 we did in the last 15 minutes. One is again obvious (although Wednesday's 3 is spectacularly bad). Oxford and Stoke both scored 7 in that period. As a proportion of total goals, our 9/66 in the final 15 minutes was only bettered (worsed?) by Wednesday's 3/30

  5. Bad though Sellés was, only one of the 12 goals conceded on his watch came in the last 15 minutes (and that was scored in the 78th). Instead, the issue under Sellés was tactical: teams took advantage of the lunatic midfield running out of steam in the second half (3 conc 46-60; 4 conc 61-75)

I was thinking about this watching the playoff semi last night. Can you imagine our team having to play extra time after a blood and thunder 90 mins? Middlesbrough looked out on their feet in extra time and a number of them were cramping up, but we'd have been doing that after 75 mins.

I know you’re personally offended if anyone criticises Cwissy but your argument is undone by the sheer number of videos/photos online of our players in pubs, bars and restaurants. FFS you can go in the hotel an hour after the game and meet at least half a dozen of them.

One of the reasons Selles and his staff were so unpopular with the players is that they immediately put a stop to it and expected players to behave professionally and look after themselves.

It’s not like it costs any money either. Look at Rochdale’s end to the season, they’ve been promoted based on their performance in the last 15 minutes of games and have gone to the well when it really matters. Our fans leave at 75 minutes because they know (as evidenced by Balham) they if we’re losing the game is over, even if we’re winning there’s a fair chance we throw it away.

why cant we have both ... must be some Bash type players out there surely?
