After finishing the previous season strongly and making some astute summer signings (Unsworth, Gillespie, Short and Shipperley) didn't we start off with Leicester at home and after about 70 minutes we were struggling even at 1-1.

Then Warnock made a triple substitution I think and the rest is history. Our squad now has the same feel about it as the one then. If we are now struggling at 70 minutes the options are limitless with Baxter, JCR, Davies, McNuts and Porter likely to be on the bench. Warnock's side two different looking midfields.

The 1st half of the season we had

Ifil Monty Jags Quinn

2nd half

Quinn/Ifil Jags Tonge Armstrong.

I think with an extra dimension upfront (bring someone in with pace) this team could have quite a few looks as the season goes on. it might not be pretty to begin with and we might struggle to get the car out of the garage, however there is enough talent that a formidable team should evolve.

Does this season remind anyone else of any other season?

We didn't finish the 04-05 season strongly. Having looking good bets for the play offs we took only 2 points fom our last 5 games and finished 8th.

We beat Leeds 4-0 after the signing of Webber. Wasn't that at the end or have I gone barking?

That was on 5th April. Thats when we looked good for the play offs. Record after that:

9/4 H QPR W3-2
12/4 A Forest D1-1
15/4 H Derby L0-1
23/4 A Watford D0-0
30/4 H Millwall L0-1
8/5 A Wolves L2-4.

Warnock was booed after the Millwall defeat more or less ended our play off hopes and there was widespread speculation he would be sacked.

I remember the season when Warnock signed Wayne Allison and Iffy Onoura and I would've sacked him on the spot right there and then!

(Allison turned out Ok as it happened).

Was that the one with the fly-on-the-wall TV programme where he tore a strip off the players saying they has pissed away their talent and a great chance at promotion and to take a long hard look at themselves?

We do have a solid looking squad for the first time in years that looks capable of doing well. I daren't make any predictions though for fear of jinxing the whole thing.

Tbh lister,i don't think it would be your fault if we didn't get promoted would it:eek:
Don't be too hard on yourself lister clough:D

In that case, I'll throw caution to the wind. We'll win the league by 21 points, and while I'm going crazy, might as well win the League Cup & FA Cup too. Sorry in advance for jinxing us.... ;)

I remember us beating Leicester that was a good match.

4-1 and it ended up looking so easy by the final whistle.

Weren't much of a match until the last ten minutes or so as I recall.

You wouldn't have had us winning 4-1 with 20 minutes still to play.

It was the start of a fine afternoon on the piss, going on to watch England run through the Australian top and middle order, including Harmison's perfect slower ball to bowl Clarke. Was in a very advanced state of refreshment by the end of that evening...

Gray put us 1-0 with a pen just before HT and Leicester equalised after 65 mins as I recall and they looked the likely winners. We then got a soft pen with about 10 mins left which Kabba scored and they then collapsed with Ifill and Bromby getting two more.

David Connolly equalised for Leicester and they seemed to be the more likely team to score the the next goal. Lee Mason then saw a handball by a Leicester player in the box when the ball was being cleared and we were fortunate to get a 2nd penalty

I have to agree, I think we've got quite a bit of strength in depth, particularly in midfield. With the added bonus of a couple of youngsters potentially breaking through in Dimaio, Reed, De Girolamo and Kennedy again once fit.

I'm also reluctant to make predictions, because at the end of the day, this is United. My only worry is what could potentially happen regarding Ched, mainly the media coverage could take over and overshadow things.

The potential is there to be quite exciting side.

Re Ched, there may be initial negative press (to be expected) but it blows over. And the media publications that would really make a story out of it aren't the type of ones I would call 'respected' and yes there would be stick from other fans, as well as our own but I think he could add something to this side once fit. And if he's going to come back, is there a better manager to do be in charge of the process?

As for overshadowing, if we are performing well enough I don't see it being a large enough shadow.

Possibly 1970/71? We needed a lift for the final push. We brought in David Ford, Trevor Hockey and John Hope. Apart from Ford, nobody had heard of the other two.

Disagree. Hockey was well known at Birmingham. Ironically to me it was Ford who was the unknown and as for Hope-less.....

I made a comparison after the first flurry of signings to the summer '05 recruitment - that team had potential leaders all over the pitch as a result, something we've really lacked for a number of years. 4 of the signings (Alcock, Butler, Basham, Wallace) have captained their teams at some point - the likes of Morgs, Jags, Short, Monty, Unsworth had or would do the same. As much as I'm critical of Doyle, it can't exactly have been easily to shoulder all the responsibility for on-the-pitch leadership - the great thing about that 2005/06 team was that you had a set of players that had that presence. Hopefully we'll see similar results.

How about the 1996-1997 season?

The previous season we were deep in the relegation zone when the manager was sacked in December.
His big name replacement at first steadied the ship with a series of draws.
After reshaping the squad with the backing of a new investor, he was able to introduce a more attractive style of football and we finished the season with a fine run of form (9 wins from the last 14 matches) and rose up the table from 23rd to 9th.

Optimism was very high in August 1996 that we would simply continue with that good form, exciting football and gain automatic promotion.
Instead the manager adopted a different safety-first approach and after flirting briefly with the top two in December and January, we ultimately finished only 5th and of course lost in the Play-off Final to a last minute winner.

1996/97 was my first season at the age of 7. I always remember the Stoke game at home which I think sealed our play-off spot, we won 1-0 thanks to a Carl Tiler scrappy goal? The game was also famous for a streaker too.

And Fjortoft caught her before handing her over to the Security/Police!
