Surely any well functioning club is hawking Peck around trying to get as close to £20m for him as we can, knowing we have Soumare as the next cab off the rank to be the next asset we sell for considerable profit.

As I've said elsewhere, what we're trying to do with Rothwell, Philips, Bamford seems wrong in 2026...
Soumare isn't our player.

I think, reading between the lines, what we can conclude is that CW probably knows that this is his last chance.
He's therefore going to prioritise promotion — hence the recruitment will focus on experience to get us out of the division, rather than the long term in the shape of young athletic players with a high resale value etc etc.

We need a combination of both youth and experience.
And experience can come when your only 25/26. You don't have to be past 30.

Cooper, Burrows, Seriki, Peck, Arblaster, Brooks and Cannon fall into this bracket of our younger players.

We had an obligation to purchase Soumaré on promotion for €7m. He's definitely not worth that to United as a non-parachute payment club but if we'd gone up he would have been a savvy investment.

I would also humbly suggest that Chris Wilder might not have been the best manager for "Djibi".

Completely disagree. Given there was no plan, no proposed structure and a preseason to plan for it was absolutely crazy sacking the manager (whoever it was) at that point. To say it was the right decision is in my mind nothing short of madness (and I say again it doesn’t matter who the manager was).
of course it mattered who the manager was absolute madness picking selles when there were others available with much better credentials so we will disagree on this one

He might go on to better things. I think jury's out there.
Not sure if he'd be a savvy investment. He had a few matches where he stood out, rest I thought he looked awkward at times and loose. His sending off was a miscontrol too. And I'm still confused as to how he let that goal in vs Norwich.

Why does it matter who the manager was? That is personalising a sacking which is bonkers. We weren’t ready for the next steps in terms of a management strategy, if you think it’s a good idea to sack someone without a real plan (and we all know the recruitment process was completely flawed) then yes we’ll need to agree to disagree. If we’re going to sack a manager I do expect us to have made a good attempt at considering next steps!

One season left on his deal, the time to get rid is probably in the past mainly due to not getting relegated and saving some face by winning 3 of the last 6. As a board they really need to be looking to 27/28 as to how that looks. Conversations need to be had with Wilder as to his intentions as he will be 60 in that year, does he still have the passion to continue (I know that is not exactly old but some might want to call it a day) if he is in it to continue then we have the dilemma of how much longer do we give for results. The other dilemma is how and who do we replace him with, although a top 8 would be ideal, realistically based on the teams that are going to be in the mix, it will be a tough ask to be up there. It might be a year of lowering expectations and consolidating in the Championship a bit, building some foundations off the pitch (literally in the Dore project) and stabilising the club for a push to improve over the next 5 years.
Conversation should be 'Thanks for everything Chris, but unless you get us promoted, change your style to one that the 'punters' aren't sick of, this is your last contract here. Please make the best of it'

CW 'But, it'll be better the year after, I promise'

Owners 'Thanks for your time Chris. Close the door on your way out'.

All well and good but by the sounds en it we need the cash flow that comes from being in the premier league

Yep, or the other cashflow being selling academy players to fund infrastructure they are the only other thing with material value, it's a bit of a chasing our tail type of thing but I can't see us being able to do it any other way unless there was a big corporate sponsor and to say we struggle to get main shirt sponsors, I can't see we can get naming rights sponsors for our training ground easy enough.

A quick bit of research from transfermrkt:

  • The 50 youngest starting XI's this season - Neither Coventry, Ipswich, Southampton, Boro or Hull feature. Millwall feature once (Blades 4 times - a list dominated by Norwich and QPR)
  • In addition - the top 50 oldest starting XI's this season: Hull feature 7 times, Ipswich once (Blades 0) - suggesting that apart from Hull, the top teams actually have the exact mix of youth and experience required to be successful.

In terms of the average age of the entire squad:
  • Ipswich and Hull sit in the top 6 of oldest squads by average age
  • Blade have the 8th youngest (25.4) - though Millwall (25.2) and Southampton 25) do have slightly younger squads overall - though their omission from the youngest starting XI's list shows that they were utilising their experienced players much more than their youth.

In conclusion - I'd argue requiring experience is not a myth - but suggesting the top teams in the league are the youngest is.

Name a club that doesn't subscribe to that business model.

Chansiri did for years.

Until.

The problem being that.

There is only room for 20 clubs in the PL.

Even less in the top six.

'other' clubs, have to adapt.

He isn't going anywhere this summer. Best to just accept it 🤷‍♂️

I’d love them to announce he’s gone, but have accepted they aren’t planning it.

But knowing the fan bases opinion I’d have expected a public vote of confidence.

Or at least something that shows they have a bit of a plan for next season.

What’s wrong with November, January or Feb though I guess it could be argued the latter two need any January signings to bed in. Feel for November though, getting a bit left out

The 4 youngest teams in 24/25 finished 1, 2, 3, 4

If we are in a position where buying anyone in the JTW makes sense I would be stunned. A repeat of this year where the season is dead well before Christmas seems incredibly likely.
