I realise the AI term stuck but really its data analysis and if anyone thinks we should sign players in future without it then we're in trouble
The key is using both knowledge , gut feel and data to back it up .
Using data on its own is as nonsense as not using it at all.
Perhaps we might get players who are less injury prone , can last 90 mins or have some pace rather than the gaffer likes them and they'll fit in .

Just seen this on X. Very funny that fans have voted they’d rather keep Nwachukwu and Ukaki rather than wilder ‘culture carrier’ Shackleton 😂

I've no idea, and thats my point .

It has to be a combination of the person, the player and data .

These guys are wired up like F1 cars , sprints ,recoveries, distance etc . It'll all be there along with stats and scouting.

Campbell has had a big drop off this season. Bit harsh on Curtis who's had a good loan spell.

When things are going well, Bettis is all over public talks about players, plans, contracts, transfers
When things are going poorly, Bettis just an accountant who handles sponsorship etc

He's giving an absolute masterclass in grifting. Fair play, gotta get that bag 💰

Exactly 💯
That's the flaw in Wilder's outright rejection of any method of assessing players ,
apart from his noticeably imperfect judgement (since 2020) ,
Or the fact that they're "in" , coz they :
like a drink and can carry that culture
or
they're riddled with injuries
or
they're a "project".
The biggest problem that the idiot Selles has given the club is not the legacy of his terrible signings
But
the fact that if he is the reference point by which the club judges the managers who follow him ,
We are going nowhere.
What we don't need to hear - ad infinitum - is
"At least he's not as bad as Selles".
That bar is set too low.

As you say if we'd used data on Davies it would have told us he cant string more than 5 games together without having 3 months out and it would have saved us a fortune in wages.

Or, we could just have used common sense...

There was a thread on here about the (potential) signing of TD 3 years ago. Some posters said we really shouldnt be signing him as he is never fit and he will be a very expensive waste of wages... whilst some others, liked to say that the naysayers were just against the lad coming in cos he dressed like a dandy.

Seems like common sense isnt shared by all. The thing is, it gives me sod all pleasure in it turning out as a blind man could see it doing. Its just been a total waste of of a big chunk of money that could have been spent elsewhere. We havent half spunked some money away as our recruitment team(s) seemingly have shit for brains at times.

Nice lad though and he sure looks good in his attire.

A fully fit and regularly functioning TD would never have been a signing we could have aspired to or been able to afford. As we sadly only saw in glimpses he would have been one of the best players in the Champ so it was always a risk and unfortunately this one didn’t come off. Whatever we paid him whilst no doubt looks a lot in comparison, it’s peanuts to what he has likely had previously or was hoping to build back up to. Shame for the lad - and unfortunate for the club that this one didn’t work

As a one off gamble it would have been fine. But we make far too many of them and the only one I can ever remember paying off is Didzy.

But both had not played for a long time before signing. That is a risk in itself.
But those risks paid off. That’s the nature of it. Some do, some don’t.
Neither have had careers that have been constantly interrupted by a series of lengthy injury absences in the way that Shackleton and T Davies had, and both signed initially on short term contracts. If we sign Souttar after his last two years it will be another stupid gamble.

15 to 20 is not out of the ordinary
2024 25 season
we sold 8
loaned out 9
and released 12

thats 29 so 15- 20 would be less than normal

the trick is getting better bench players than we have now
That's the key. We don't want bench players who do nothing but preserve the bloke coming off for the next game. They've got to make a difference in their own right.

Back in the day, the last thing a tiring defence wanted was to see a fresh Peschisolido coming on and running them ragged for 25 minutes.

We want opposition players hearts to sink when Gary Sinclair announces who's coming on, rather than in most cases this season, opposition defences can breathe a sigh of relief and start thinking about what they're having for tea while Tom Cannon or Tahith Chong attempt to do their footballer impressions.

And the trick will be how do we get rid of Matos, Zattersrom and Chong (Although dunno if he is one being lined up to go).
Because these aren't making us a better team and take up wages. But all were brought in for fee's of which we won't get back what we paid for them.

Wasn't it said at the time that a lot of McGoldrick's injuries were cause by or exacerbated by his 2.5hr commute from Nottingham to Ipswich? The same can't be said for Shackleton and Davies (T) who were playing for their hometown clubs and, presumably, not making things worse by sitting in a car for hours a day.

Looking at this season I’d categorise players into 5 areas:

Players we’d have gone down without, goals and assists have kept us in the league:

Bamford
Hamer
Brooks

Players who’ve done well but not all season:

McCallum
O’Hare
Seriki
Bindon
Peck
Riedewald

Players who’ve been injured and not available but have been good before:

Cooper
Arblaster
Campbell

Players who are simply not worth having around either based on form, availability or both:

Ings
Shackleton
Mee
Burrows
Phillips
Tanganga
Chong
Matos
Hoever
T Davies
Ogbene
Soumare

Possible squad filler:

A Davies
McGuinness
Cannon

The top 3 categories we should aim to keep and hope that some get fitter and more consistent, this will need good conditioning and coaching (can the current team manage this?!).

If we can’t keep them, maximise the sale proceeds from a couple or 3 of them.

The 4th category will shrink this close-season as contracts and loans expire. But there’s still some deadwood to get rid of.

The last category are here to make the numbers up and should be used only if needed.

Oh joy!
