End of first season in League one and we have to sell our best player Quinn, costs us our chances of promotion

End of second season in League one we have to sell our best player MacDonald, destroys our chances of promotion

End of third season in League one we have to sell our best player Maguire, sets back our chances of promotion?

If we don't go up this season see Murphy being the next out the revolving door...

If we don't go up the season after that it will be Scougall and so on...

Conclusion..

"WE HAVE TO GET OUT OF THIS DOG SHIT DIVISION!"

I am now back out of the hotel to the bars of Zante, See you for the Bristol game.

Baldock - Bristol - gone nowhere
Assombalonga - Peterborough - gone nowhere
Mooney - orient - gone nowhere

The teams at the top have kept their best players this far. Maybe it's not the division, but our club?

Must be an age thing, getting forgetful and all that. Remind me again of the PL clubs that made offers for those?

Because other clubs have chairman that say things like this....

And remind me, which PL club was it we lost our best player to last season? Or was it a team in the same division?

How did Baldock end up at Bristol? Signed for West Ham from MK in circumstances that you suggest only SUFC do. Flopped at WHU was sold back to a Champuonship club (Bristol C), got relegated with them, finished mid-table with them.

Assombalonga has had one season in League 2 and one in League 1. He may get poached but probably won't jump ship until January when he knows where Peterboro will be.

Orient have already lost Adubajo who was one of their most consistent performers along with Cox. Dave Mooney is 29 yrs old and has had 1 good season in English football. If he signs for anybody in the championship or above I would be most surprised.

That's not the point of the thread though. The point is, we always lose our best players, others clubs don't. Doesn't matter who they are or the circumstances that led them to be there. We have always been a selling club, it's just the way the club is run. Imagine if McCabe had come out and said 'I don't care what the offer is, Maguire/McDonald/Quinn/Brown (insert who you want) isn't going anywhere" such as Fry did above, but that seemingly will never change. It's sad but true.

Small minded team. Small minded board. Always have been, always will be.

What if Peterborough, Orient and Bristol end up in administration because they didn't balance their books? It happens every year to other clubs - over spend or under sell and end up in administration. I guess we'll see.
Just a thought.

Hilarious.

Come on, you're not fooling anyone Mr.McCabe

Sorry, again must be old age, not explaining this properly. What I meant to say was what ACTUAL offers have they had, rather than social media bollocks from that fruit loop Fry.

May I suggest you look at Southampton.

That is proof that if you have the talent, they will be sold. It's the circle of life.

Arsenal have shipped players out to both Manchester clubs over recent seasons against their wishes. Barcelona have just taken Liverpool's best player. Real Madrid have just taken Monaco's best player and a World Cup winner from Bayern Munich.

Unfortunately we are way down the pecking order to not lose our best players. The only teams that appear not to lose their players are mediocre premiership teams like West Brom, Stoke etc. the reason for that is that their players are mediocre and not good enough for the big 6 or 7 but too good for championship teams.

And on the McDonald loss you mention above. Wolves had premiership funding last season and bought their way out of our division. They stand a fantastic chance of going straight through the championship also as that funding is still there (you heard it here first).

This is the ultimate "white flag" argument. "Better sell while we can...don't want to end up like Leeds/pigs/Southampton/other team in a higher league".

Selling our best players every season is why we are In a worse position every season. What is so hard to understand about this?

I realise that it's not ideal to sell your best players but tell me this, what's the alternative to "selling club" that isn't boom or bust (which inevitably ends in bust)?

Or why we still have a team to support?

Nice one Matt. "I'm just glad I have a team to support" and "even Man Utd are a selling club" in the same thread.

Tell us how Maguire was never any good and easily replaceable and you've got the set.

Keep your best players who are under contract - when you have publicly stayed you do not need to sell them - and win promotion.

See: Leeds and Beckford, Huddersfield andRhodes.

If we really do need the money, the board have basically spent the last 12 months lying through their teeth.

It's not so much the selling, it's the fees and where the money goes. Still haven't replaced Blackman 18 months after he left.
How hard can it be to find a striker? And i don't mean some dumpling who scored a few goals in the SPL, who may be an inspired signing but most probably will end up being flooged for next to nowt at the end of the season. If we spent £1m on any player, i think we'd all be stunned into next tuesday. Could have probably got Brayford for £1m a month ago, seems no chance now cos he's been playing well pre-season apparently. So presumably Brayford won't happen and all this lovely money we're rolling in from the "investment", the cup run, and now Maguire going, we will 100% be splashing out on a proven striker imminently. But who really expects that to happen? And don't come out with all this "there's none available" cobblers, if there's not 1 striker in the entire world who is better than deadly Chris Porter, would come here and wouldn't cost more than £1m-ish then we all may as well give up.

I'm not entirely sure what your point is really. Fry came out and said 'we aren't interested in selling, even if it's a £5m offer' so if a club valued him at, say £4m, what is the point in making that offer. That is genuinely what you call a 'firm stance'. Therefore, Peterborough have retained their best player for another season. I'd rather have a 'fruit loop' in charge if he point blank refused to sell our best players than constantly flogging them at the first/second offer. This isn't a one-off, as mentioned above.

Ok, different issue. The issue here then is which is true:
1. We don't NEED to sell
2. We need to balance our books.

Which one is really obvious and which one is designed to drive up the price of any player (admittedly drive up the price for the Blades is only to a maximum of 2.5M).

It tends to be every year we sell a key player and then we are sat scratching our heads as to why we are still in this league.

Yes big clubs do sell as well but not as often as we let key players leave.

This ^^^.

I was going to start a thread on it, but didn't want to clutter the thread feed.

I don't care about investment, I don't care if we have millions of pounds or just a few pennies, the ONLY thing I want from my club is honesty. IF we genuinely had money, our transfer window would not have been anything like the one we are currently in. I just can't stand beiing lied to, and the false promises. Why not just say 'look, we don't have a lot, we'll have to get by with what we have, getting a few freebies here and there and try and build a squad on the cheap.'? I'd honestly be fine with that.

What I hate is the bullshit 'think liverpool investment' 'we'll invest in the playing staff' etc etc which clearly hasn't happened. Just such poor relations with the fans, and makes it worse for Clough when the fans have raised expectations and he has a limited budget. Amazes me really, as I say, just be honest, so we know what will genuinely constitute a good season for our budget, which is proven time and time again to reflect finishing position. I think with our current squad we would do well to finish in the top 6 and that should be applauded, should it happen. However, this constant talk of investment leads people to inflate their expectations, and not look at the squad objectively. Clough will be the biggest loser in this scenario IMO.

Do you get a bit of wee in your pants everytime Bristol City get a mention ?
Care to have a wager who finishes higher ?
