Lesson #1. 'How to hang on to a lead.'

The OP still observes BCFC successfully defended their lead.

They won 1-0.

You can press all you want. McGunness headers, shots whizzing past the post from Gus, Peck and Burrows. Keeper makes some great saves. Bamford fluffs another sitter.

But BCFC still won 1-0.

Now tell me - we are 3-1 up against Swansea last Friday. Another game I didn't see, as I am abroad. Seemingly we did everything wrong defending a lead, too.

So tell me how BCFC succeeded and we didn't.
Hands up anyone else abroad who managed to watch the last 2 games.

Sorry, but you can't give a constructive post about a game, if you haven't even watched it. And all those yellows? You mean three?
I think anyone could have predicted with accuracy what the first half would look like by looking at the team sheet and formation. I don’t think you’d have needed to watch it.

Yes but the point being made was that this was somehow an example of how we should be playing to hold onto a lead, the first half was indeed predictably diabolical but has nothing to do with the point being made.

The point being made is 'win at all costs'.

I did say I would take a filthy win, just like BCFC got today.

yes I’m sure we’d have all been absolutely delighted to have played the way Bristol City did in the second half.

They only won the game because we missed some glorious chances.

Lies, damned lies, and statistics - yes Bristol City won the game but anyone with eyes (and even a few people without) could tell that on another day we come away with the win

We should have punished them today no doubt but at the end of the day they still held onto the lead.

A better example of how not to hold onto a lead would be us against Swansea.

Thats the way to form an opinion on a game of football watch a text feed

We lost 1-0.

What opinion do you want?

This thread is about 'how to hang onto a lead', which we have been poor at.

BCFC hung onto their lead. From what I could see from the BBC text feed, we were still profligate and wasteful in front of goal and underperforming in the first 45.

Do you disagree?

That the way Bristol City ‘hung onto a lead’ was awful, and that we could easily have got back into the game. The second half I can hardly remember them getting into our half such was the dominance we had. If Bamford hadn’t dropped an all time stinker we’d be leaving with all 3 points.
First half was an absolute stinker but that second half performance was a sight to behold. We almost never let them out of their half. The XG on the Bamford chance must have been about 0.99 but he opted for the other 1%. It was great to see the fans at the end applauding the players despite the result. We did everything but score.

They were very lucky to hang onto such a lead. The way they did it probably has a success rate of about 10%
They were probably fortunate to have the lead in the first place as they should have been down to 10 men after about 15 mins
Did the BBC feed tell you that

BCFC hung onto their lead.
Fortunate on another day they would have lost 3-1. Keeper MOM
we were still profligate and wasteful in front of goal
Yes we were wasteful in front of goal but at least we played decent football and created those chances
and underperforming in the first 45.
We underperformed in the 1st half because Wilder changed formation and the team selection.
Sounds like it was a bit of an experiment going 3 at the back
The 3 at the back didnt work and the midfield didnt function. Wilder saw that and changed it
