He had a sports shop in Maltby after he retired. Late 80s/early 90s. I remember him dislocating his shoulder (I think) in a Leeds game and continue playing with his arm in a sling - they were hard in those days ;)
EdIt: Remembered it was a cup final and he went up to collect a medal with his arm in a sling not sure he played with it in a sling!

Dislocated his elbow in the very last minute of the 1972 FA Cup final. He was still lying on the pitch in agony. The team had received their winners medals without Mick who was still having treatment by Les Cocker. A teammate got his medal on behalf of Mick. Mick wanted to meet the Queen so Norman Hunter took him up the steps to meet the Queen.

He injured his shoulder in the 1972 cup final where he also set up the only goal.
For us he was a superb centre forward. He didn't really look like a footballer having a bit of a stoop and seemed a bit knocked kneed but appearances are deceptive. He was strong and fearless with good ball control and powerful and magnificent in the air where he seemed to be able to hang until the ball arrived.
I was gutted when we sold him and deliberately missed the next home match in disgust.
He won a couple of full England caps with us and one more after he left us I think. It should have been more.
Interestingly after he went to Leeds he looked fitter stronger and more ruthless.

Elbow not shouder
 
I was 8 or 9 when he was sold to Leeds. I remember being devastated that we had sold our star player. A pattern to be repeated many times over the following decades. I think we sold Birchenall shortly afterwards too. Mick Jones was an excellent centre forward and very much underated outside of Yorkshire. Another Blades product of that time deserving of more recognition from England
 
The board decided to accept £100,000 from Leeds, a big deal in those days, thus proving that the directors knew the price of something and the value of nothing. There was a downturn in Kop sales that Saturday as the hardcore were on the terrace shouting “Jews” at the board when they finally slid into their seats. They compounded this by selling Alan Birchenall to Chelsea for about the same price later in the season.

Unbelievable stupidity - you can mump and moan all you like on here, but that was the worst pair of decisions in my 68 years at Bramall Lane
 



The Squire of Shireoaks, near Worksop, taking over from my all time hero Doc Pace. As mentioned previously, superb in the air with the ability to seemingly hang in the air, yet still get power in his headers. Can vividly remember him scoring a similar header when we beat Man U 2 - 1 at the Lane at Boxing Day (IIRC). His cohort Alan Birchenall (Sherman) scored the other, also a header. David Herd for Man U? Only 5ft 10/11, but rarely many six footers back then.

Remember getting the news at school that he'd been sold to Leeds for £100k, absolutely gutted. Followed shortly with Sherman going to Chelsea for the same amount. Learnt then that we would always be a selling club and under achievers. But have stuck with them regardless and a season ticket from '68 onwards.
 
I saw him and Birchenall play at Anfield one evening when Liverpool were champions and Mick and Alan were just getting a game. At 4:0 down I shouted “come on the Blades” as I stood on the kop on my own.
Some wag shouted “Bloody Hell they’ve even got a supporter” and even I had to laugh at the scouse wit.
I think we lost 5:1?

Totally agree it would have been interesting if we would have added to the squad with the likes of Currie,Carlin, Hockey etc
We had some very good young players who had come through our central league team the future would have been so different
I remember a sit down protest on the terrace steps
I believe we were the first club to sell two players for £100,000 pounds

I was at Craven Cottage in the fa cup 1-1 draw Jones for the Blades Clarke for Fulham like you say Silent successfully linked up together at the dirties

I know his brother lived there (St James Ave, just past the shops) in the 70s, but I never knew that Mick did.

Colin Morris definitely did in the 80s, as I collected his milk money and usually saw the friendly Mrs M, and a young lad (Lee).

Of no particular relevance to your point, both Eddie Colquhoun and Alan Hodgkinson, lived in Todwick.

Birchenall and Jones were excellent for us, so losing both was a genuine blow. For as long as I can recall we've always been a selling club, so no surprise when it happens, as it will continue to be the case.
