New episode out. The first in a 2-parter about the Nigel Clough era. Thanks for all the suggestions and feedback so far

Cracking listen. Found myself rewatching highlights of games mentioned on the pod, especially the cup ones, some great memories. And some great names mentioned at the start too. Jasper Johns. Still remember that horror show of a professional debut.

Can't wait for the next one as the following season I stupidly thought promotion was going to be a formality in a weak league one and we royally cocked it up (again).

Cheers guys.

Another good listen - thanks.
I was with Roy…I thought we were looking into the abyss after Crewe.

And I did wonder whether you would go down kit wormhole when talking about the Cambridge match - the lesser spotted home shirt with red shorts & black socks combo. Shorts and socks combinations could be a topic for another day 🤣. For staters, Dave Bassett was good on this and had his reasons for chopping and changing, see Wimbledon in ‘90 and Everton in ‘91.

We're definitely going to do a kit episode. Got one coming up about shirt sponsors soon with Deadbat

Excellent listen again. Really enjoying these.
None of you could recall much about that Rotherham game we won 1-0 just before the semi-final where we had a lot of the kids playing but I do.
Big fat Steve Evans was in his first stint as Rotherham manager and he was very animated on the touchline and not happy.
Rotherham tried to kick us off the park. They were persistently fouling Maguire at corners and free kicks and the ref must have warned them about 5 times and eventually he got fed up with it and awarded a penalty, and I think their player got sent off, which Evans was livid about.

I do recall him being fuming but he always seemed fuming. I remember him saying we'd been saying all week that we would be playing our reserves but ended up playing our first team. Such a bitter man

Never the same after he lost the gig playing Les Campbell in Phoenix Nights.

New episode out now where we discuss When Saturday Comes. I'd like to say it's to coincide with the new musical that's coming out but in reality we just wanted to talk about When Saturday Comes

Can't see if it's already been mentioned but in the episode you all seem quite bemused how Pete Postlethwaite's been talked/conned in to being in this film. If I remember rightly he was in a couple of episodes of Sharpe with Sean Bean which I think went out before When Saturday Comes so maybe owed him a favour ?
We were in The Sportsman one night, may have been the crowd filming at The Lane night (which I was dragged to by the former Mrs DBGoH) and I think PP was in there with Sean Bean and definitely Melanie Hill who was tiny.

I don`t think its that surprising - he did loads of smaller films throughout his career - I imagine WSC was a nice little project he could fit between other things that allowed him to be filming in this country (Usual Suspects filmed in the US, his work on Sharpe would have seen him in eastern Europe, Dragonheart was Slovakia, Romeo+Juliet was Mexico)

And as Michael Cain said of Jaws 4 - "I have never seen the film, but by all accounts it was terrible. However I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific"

Sometimes you just gotta take a paycheck...

Second part of the Clough episode out now. Forget about being crap last night and enjoy us being crap 12 years ago instead

I really enjoyed both episodes and hats off to you all, for the research.

I have to say that I am not as anti-Clough as you all seemed to be. Weir was a disaster and we were only heading one way. I give massive credit to Clough for keeping us up and making something of that season (scoring a goal at new Wembley!).

Some of the stuff in his second season reminded me what a chuff he could be. Fallig out with his best two centre backs (Butler and Collins), really was pathetic, but I always admired a bit of his chippiness. Maybe because I started wathing footy in the 70s, when his dad was a chuff too, but a funny and very succesful one.

In my mind, there is no absolutely no conflict between the Clough and Adkins seasons. Cluff was stubborn but gave us some great highs. Adkins promised the Earth, talked bollocks and gave me the worst ever final home game, in 55 years of United.

As Cloughie might have said, 'you are all wrong, but thanks anyway for the pod'.

I’d barely started football by the start of the Clough era but I remember him fondly, the pods have actually made my opinion of him dip. Yeah he made bad and odd decisions but he did ok ultimately and returned us to a playoff quality team.

I’d forgotten how much money we spent though (partly due to this being our selling club era). What we spent on Brayford is obscene.

There is no question in my mind that Cloughs treatment of players is probably exactly what his Dad did in management.

Unfortunately for Clough Jnr either he wasn't as good at it as his Dad, or his Dad's method simply didn't work any more (I suspect the latter given how Cough Snrs) management career ended.

I do agree with you personally but at the risk of sitting on the fence, I also think he wasted a great opportunity simply by being stubborn and a bit weird. I completely concur with you regarding his first season

He is perfect for a underdog club. Very old school and understands the culture of British football in a way a lot of other managers don't. It's no surprise he has so much success in the cups. I don't think he's comfortable at all managing a club expected to do well

He is the archetypal safe pair of hands. He will keep you up if you are in trouble. He’s an excellent cup manager.

He has too many blind spots to be consistently successful in terms of promotions etc. in nearly 20 seasons he’s won 2: Burton when the job was two thirds done by Hasselbaink, and Mansfield the season before last (and fair play to him). He should have done a lot better than that, but you get stuff like you had in 2014-5, such as the weird reliance on players from a select background, the signing of injured players, falling out with a number of players and bizarre selections. If ever a Blades team under achieved it’s the 2014-5 side (well, the Robson team was worse).

Undr the Cosh comments on him are telling. 90 per cent of the players love him, because he lets them do what the hell they like. There were some big drinking arseholes in his Blades teams.

Having said all that I should probably listen to your new pod!

Really enjoyed listening to those brought back some memories of where I was at the time
Not really a big fan of football nostalgia podcasts but I enjoyed listening to this more than most united based content recently
( Pinch form line aside )
Made a nice change from Jimmy ramble and his half a dozen mates saying the same things repeatedly like a glitch in the Wakefield matrix

Podcast on testimonials of yesteryear, and obscure friendlies vs foreign teams. (Milan, dynamo moscow comes to mind. Testimonials btw when was the last?

The nation of Latvia and Graeme Souness’ Benfica jump out as weird friendlies.
Was the Benfica one part of the Deano deal?

Think I’m the opposite, love the nostalgia ‘whooo remembers’ type podcasts and prefer that reminiscing over 10 different pods breaking down the weekend’s match (although of course Bladespod did always do this well)

I’d forgotten how potty Clough actually was until I listened to these pods.

With Phippsy in the boardroom and Cloughie in the dressing room, this was the greatest reality TV series that never got made.
